UI ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT TO ADD POSTGAME TAILGATING TIME,

CONTINUES ANNUAL REVIEW OF GAME-DAY CONTRIBUTOR PARKING

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Fans attending home games of the 2015 Iowa football team will have a little more time after most home games to celebrate Hawkeye victories, Gary Barta told football season ticket holders who participated in a conference call Thursday night with the UI's director of athletics.

For games that kick off at 11 a.m., consumption of alcoholic beverages will cease three hours after the end of the game - an hour longer than last year. All tailgating activities in University-owned parking lots and ramps will end four hours after the end of an 11 a.m. game.

For games that begin at 2:30 p.m., consumption of alcoholic beverages must end two hours after the game - and hour longer than last year - and all tailgating activities in University-owned parking lots and ramps must end three hours after game.

Postgame tailgating will not be permitted at all for games that start in the evening (6 p.m. or later).

During the final hour of the postgame tailgating, fans will be asked to pack up tents, tables, chairs, grills, etc. and begin to make their exit from University parking lots and ramps.

Postgame alcohol and tailgate compliance will be enforced by UI officials. The exception to this policy is that RV owners will be allowed to spend the night, however, tailgating activities will not be permitted past the designated time.

"We know the opportunity to enjoy pregame and postgame time with friends and family is an important part of the game-day experience for many of our fans. We're optimistic that the excellent support and participation we've had from the vast majority of our fans who want to enjoy their full day at Kinnick Stadium will continue," said Barta said in an official statement released by the UI on Friday.

"The 'fun factor' surrounding Hawkeye football is an important focus of ours as we plan for 2015. However, we can't and won't let the bad behavior of a very small number of fans ruin the experience for the overwhelming majority," he added.

Barta noted that the number of citations and arrests on game days has been on a steady decline during recent seasons. He also noted it remains very important that our fans respect the private property in the neighborhoods adjacent to Kinnick Stadium and the unique needs of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

"We are very encouraged that the number incidents requiring action by our game-day security or law enforcement continues to decline. We believe this is evidence that the overwhelming majority of our fans are having fun and tailgating responsibly. We also believe they will continue to do so with the extra hour that we are adding to the postgame opportunity for our 11 and 2:30 games," said Barta.

Barta said the UI will continue to work with area law enforcement on check points during postgame travel and that a designated driver is always a great option.

"We want our fans to enjoy game day. We only have seven opportunities a year to cheer the Hawkeyes at Kinnick, so we want each of them to be fun and memorable. We also want fans to have a safe drive home," said Barta.

Barta also said the UI Athletics Department continues its annual review of game-day parking policies.

"There's always room for tweaks and improvements. It's possible between now and the season opener that we will make some adjustments and communicate those adjustments to the fans who would be directly impacted," he said.

Barta talked about the change in tailgating policy and the plan to continue to review parking and all aspects of game days at historic Kinnick Stadium during a conference call held exclusively for football season ticket customers. More than 3,500 fans of the Hawkeyes who purchased season tickets for the 2014 season participated in the conversation with Barta, who provided opening remarks and a handful of updates about happenings within the UI Athletics Department before taking questions from the participants.

Iowa will play seven home games at Kinnick Stadium next fall beginning with the season opener Sept. 5 against Illinois State. The Hawkeyes' games against Pittsburgh on Sept. 19 and Minnesota on Nov. 14 will be played in prime time and televised live by the Big Ten Network.

Fans of the Hawkeyes who were season ticket customers in 2014 have until Friday, April 24, to renew their season ticket order and retain their priority. Fans of the Hawkeyes who want to purchase season tickets for the first time should contact the UI Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-IA-HAWKS.

Declining ticket sales??? Good call on the "fun factor". Or is this a post "Sally" decision?

No, but after wins is the only time somebody might admit they got something right.

Now, don't go back and start fun killing when times are good again.

Good. They are getting some things right. NOW get the student body involved in game day.

I am just waiting for GareBare and the wonderful U of I marketing group to offer me a free ticket when I fill up at Caseys. Go get 'em Gary. Wins those fans back with your night games and NOW longer tailgating... Whoop hoo. What's next??? I can go to my car at halftime???

What a clown and what joke Iowa football has become.

Ho hum offense, uninspiring coach, "that's football" slogans, 3 yard passes, high cost seating rights, students with no seat reservations(25 years ago, students had reserved seats that got better every year they bought tickets), bad seats in the end zone for students, aging Baby Boomers dieing off, recent graduates with huge student debt and lack of good jobs, Big Ten Network, large screen TV's, tuition rates that have gone up twice the rate of inflation over the last 20 years, and then they hammered down on fans trying to have a little bit of fun on football weekends. Add it all up, and you will get less and less season ticket sales. A full stadium will be dependent on being in the top 20 and playing quality opponents. Out AD better get his act together...

Wow. No night games for 2 years, and now we have 2 night games because of declining ticket sales. Minimal tailgating after the game folks, beat it. Oh Wait, lets extend tailgating hours. Police presence/harrasement? No worries, oh wait, lets dial the police back.

Desperation. Ticket sales must have taken a serious hit.

Gotta give em credit for trying.
Too little too late. They made a huge mistake going after the fans with nazi like police. At the time they had a waiting list for season tickets. How fast the tide has turned and they would probably do anything to take those actions back. Ferentz and his smug attitude combined with asshole police was enough to shift the tide.

This is a small carrot. To be honest the get out of town rule was not needed in the first place. Most people left in that time frame anyways.

As far as 2 night games goes let's try and remember these are BTN games. Barta saying a week before they are announced we want night games wasn't an accident. BTN shows many B1G teams at night that arent great. Iowa's administration not wanting the night games played a bigger role in IA not getting the night B1G games the past 2 years. So Gary's attempt at trying accept credit for this is lame.

Not a big Barta fan but It is clear that the only move he can make to satisfy some Iowa fans like those in this thread is to fire the whole Iowa fb staff and resign himself today...and that might not be enough for some chronic whiners. Every effort to address their complaints only draws more whining. At some point Barta will stop trying to satisfy the issues of the ''chronics'' who will never be happy unless he fires KF and humiliates him in a very public fashion. Nebraska fans got nothing on these folks.

How many times have you been harassed by police while tailgating?

I have been loaded while tailgating, tipsy while tailgating. I have been loaded or tipsy while walking from dtown to a game. Same at away games. I always take a small flask into the game to freshen up a coke. I have never been harassed by the 2stars, IC finest, or opposing fans. I believe the people that are ask for iit.

One caveat...and I wasn't drinking at all...the stadium security and IC cop did make me discard a nylon bag that was carrying my daughters rolled up ugh boot and mittens and stocking cap b/c it was about 1 inch too big. It was the Michigan night game, she was in a walking boot(and we carried the spare ugg to replace the walking boot in the stands). Pulled all the contents out, stuck them in the unrolled ugg ( which was then bigger than the nylon bag) and tossed the nylon bag over the cops shoulder and went Ralphie from the Christmas story on him. I have no idea what I said, but my daughters face was unforgettable. I'm sure I would have been toast, except a couple of idiots stumbled, fell down and started puking...wearing black and gold overalls and one had a HROT tee.

Chuck Green retires then Sally Mason announces retirement.

If it were not already obvious, I think it is pretty clear now who two of the major driving forces were behind the 15 year 'Turn Iowa City into Evanston' plan were. The temporary relaxation of some of the rules is to be expected, although, I am a little surprised this happened so soon as one of the other proponents and architect of the Exodus from the Kinnick Lot is still here - albeit in the twilight of his/her career.

What remains to be seen is whether their replacements have the same passionate disdain for tailgating that they did and if all the other supporters and enablers were simply following along or truly shared the same passion. Time will tell.

Exactly. Ding Dong the Witch is ,at least, retiring.

Personally, none. However, I have seen it several times. Usually they come up to a party where there is no trouble and start "talking" to people. Some are obviously drunk but not shouting, puking, pissing, or fighting and then get issued a citation. My question for you is why are University PD 1-2 blocks off melrose in neighborhoods on bike patrols? Melrose borders University property. I've got no problems with UI PD patrols there. Want to go around Finkbine, Dental lot, Kinnick, etc then fine. No issues. Leave the residential areas to city, sheriffs, and state patrol.

No one can ever explain why I got pulled over five times in a six year span and never issued a citation by various IC law enforcement. Never been pulled over in Cedar Rapids where I grew up. Have two speeding tickets on the highway but never stopped in any town while living in Michigan, Seattle, or KC for the last 13 years. Tell me the cops aren't predatory in that town?

Biggest killer of tailgating is shutting down locations close to the stadium including the Fieldhouse lot and Hill by Kum and Go. Couple that with annoying police and you have a recipe for lack of interest.

Curious why you care which officers are enforcing the law? Big believer in jurisdiction? It seems that you want University Heights ONLY to be patrolling University Heights. Look, if you know my posting history you certainly couldn't consider me "pro-law-enforcement", but even I acknowledge that the 4(?) officers of University Heights can't patrol 25,000 people. UH is a neighborhood of 1,000 people.

Maybe what you are saying is that private lots/yards shouldn't be open to "policing", as the public areas are. On that, we largely agree, but to a point the patrols are necessary. Much like any "public" event, when you allow the public to walk on to your property/drink/eat/use facilities, you are open yourself up to policing.

I'm not sure anyone would disagree with you about the "predatory" nature to IC/UI police. Most are pointing out that this isn't specific to tailgating, nor is it even remotely new.
In fact, you are less likely to be cited/arrested around Kinnick than anywhere else in Iowa City....especially when considering being intoxicated/drinking in public.

I don't necessarily dispute this, but those two lots aren't that populated, in comparison to the whole. Myrtle (now that construction elsewhere is done) is still a very busy/popular lot, but obviously the hill is now off-limits. What was the offset in near-kinnick parking with the new facilities and new lots? Did we gain, or lose parking?

This is my experience as well. They are PITA about "bags" going in to Kinnick, especially in the warmer weather. I have drank before and after the games, heavily and often loudly, without any real trouble. I have taken in booze to every game for well over a decade now, drank it fairly openly, and have never had an issue.

Facts are out there, the vast, vast, vast majority of people are not being ticketed, nor "harassed."

I do agree, as does everyone else, that a few years ago that ramped it up and were obnoxiously overzealous, but it was only for a few games, and has been wildly exaggerated on here.

I post this, not to defend the school, certainly not to defend the police, but to clarify for people that are concerned about all of these types of comments: You are not likely to be harassed or cited by law enforcement around Kinnick. Don't let this scare you away from attending. Yes, everyone has a buddy/uncle who got a ridiculous citation, but we are a small state, apparently most of us all have the same drunk uncle.

In my experience, not much has changed as far as policing. We still have the same 2-3 groups of cops that walk/ride down Leamer Ct and rarely do much more than wave and say hello. Rarely have I ever even seen anything more than that directed to some of the larger/younger groups closer to Koser. Biggest change I experienced was not being allowed to take my beer over the Melrose bridge and finish just outside the stadium. I'll live.

So far my theory of "don't do stupid **** and you will seldom/never have trouble with cops" is holding pretty strong.

.

This is true, and I know it has frustrated many people (especially early on), but knowing this and changing your behavior solves it entirely. They tell you not to take an open beer across the bridge. You can take a closed one, a 6 pack, a 30 pack, whatever. I've never, personally, seen them say anything about a plastic cup/20 oz, only beer cans. They aren't lying in wait and then throwing out citations, they are telling you to throw it away. Know this ahead of time and be ready. Finish your beer before Stella's and carry closed ones to the stadium, drink it outside the gates.

Pretty much spot on....hard to argue any of this
