Solar Panels from China

President Joe Biden is set to use his executive authority Monday to issue a 24-month moratorium on solar panel tariffs designed to bolster U.S. industry.

Biden’s actions will pause enforcement of Obama-era anti-circumvention tariffs on solar panels and invoke the 1950 Defense Production Act (DPA) to boost domestic panel manufacturing, the White House announced. The president’s move came in response to complaints from the green energy industry and Democratic lawmakers that an active Commerce Department probe into Chinese companies’ alleged tariff violations was slowing the administration’s clean energy goals.

For those of you that aren’t in the industry, this action was very necessary. It was getting to the point that we didn’t know if we were gonna be able to get any panels in a few months if they didn’t do something. That would not have been good for an already fragile economy, so bash on Biden all you want, but he made a difficult choice that ultimately will allow us to continue to operate.

Then the usual suspects would clamor about how Biden let another industry suffer...
This is a good move. It's good for energy independence, and good for jobs in the long and short term.

How is having solar panels being made in China lead us to energy independence? Why aren't we ramping up domestic production of solar panels?

I'm actually not blaming this on Biden but would like to see what is being done to produce green energy AT HOME.

If not we're just trading Saudi masters for ChiCom masters.

Because we can't seem to pay Americans enough to earn a decent wage to build anything worth a $hit here.

Not a free trade proponent I guess.

"Free Trade" means let the markets determine where the products are made. China does not practice Free Trade. To help the Chinese exporters, China does:
1. Cybertheft
2. Demands Intellectual Capital in Joint Ventures
3. Subsidizes state owned enterprises to let the exporters sell products at a loss.

There are 3 other trade strategies and they are:
1. French - high tariffs
2. US - high consumption
3. German - high savings

The US runs massive trade deficits and hemorrhages manufacturing jobs. Germany runs a Current Account Surplus greater than 8% of their GDP.

Germany runs very conservative fiscal policy (read: balance budget & pay down debt) while the US runs massive budget deficits to encourage consumption.

Savings-Investment=Exports-Imports

I don't expect the Solar Panels to made here but why should we help China? After WW2, the world said never again when it came to genocide. China practices genocide and is an autocratic dictatorship.

We need to end our reliance on China, no doubt. But there needs to major policy changes to make that happen. Oh, and we need to ask billionaires to make slightly less money. Shouldn’t be too hard to get people to do the right thing……

Baby formula? LET 'EM STARVE!

Solar Panels? Hey, climate change is going to kill us all, amirite?

So you would want to?
Never said that. China is able to make cheaper products because they pay their workers peanuts. America can’t compete with that, and most Americans won’t pay significantly higher prices for American made goods over Chinese.

How did he beg Saudi Arabia? He could give MBS immunity from lawsuits, but Biden refuses to do that.
Way back in February he promised to keep supporting their invasion and regime change efforts in Yemen:

President Joe Biden had a high-profile call with King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud in an effort to partially restore a relationship with Saudi Arabia. According to the White House’s readout, during the call, Biden reaffirmed the willingness of the U.S. to aid Saudi in so-called defensive operations against the Houthis in Yemen, following recent attacks by the Houthis on the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. It also alludes to a discussion of the kingdom’s oil production, which has remained low since Saudi Arabia denied Biden’s request to increase it in August.

He could recognize MBS as the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia tomorrow and pledge offensive weapons and the spigots would open.

What in the ever loving **** are you talking about? You want energy independence but Slo Joe just sold out to the ChiComs. We now are IMPORTING solar panels. That means we aren't going to make them in America.

Good God. Go Team Blue!

It wasn’t just assembled solar panels. It was also materials to assemble them here in the US. Also, you’re a fvcking hack. Give it a fvcking rest. Neither side has done anything of consequence to address the China problem.

Oh billshit. The liberal climate change agenda has sold the public on renewable's built in America and Biden sells us out to the ChiComs. **** them and **** you. You scream independence, lets do oit, lets make ALL of this here and quit claiming we need China for the "parts".

We aren't ramping up domestic production for the same reason we aren't meeting any supply demands. We can't get workers.

"[Biden] wants to fly to Saudi Arabia and beg the Saudi Arabians to give us another half a million barrels at $120 a barrel… It makes no sense,"

LOL. Why do Libs care where the panels come from? It's up to Team Red to nationalize the solar panel industry right after you guys are done nationalizing the baby formula industry.

Hilarious watching some of you stroke this biden guy off.

Should we drop all the Chinese tariffs?

I am all for lowering tariffs on our Allies. 99% of what we import from China could be made in Mexico, Malaysia, Canada, etc.

Biden should fly out to Pearl Harbor and with the USS Arizona in the background, he should announce his Pacific Charter. Just like FDR with the Atlantic Charter in 1940, it should be what we stand for and will fight for as a nation.

Biden should say genocide is not acceptable as is illegal territorial acquisition and militarization in the S. China Sea. Biden should announce that if China does not end genocide and the militarization of the S. China Sea in 30 days, tariffs will go up every month on all Chinese imports. I would start at 1% a month but reserve the right to raise them if China raises tariffs on our exports, which of course they will. Then double them after 6 months and then wait another 6 months and double them again and so on. After a few years, all trade will end between the two nations.

If we were going to do something about China it would need to be more than just tariffs. And gradual. But we all know the greed in this country knows no bounds so let’s not waste our time with hypotheticals that will not come to fruition.
