I was assured that masks(cloth ones)work at stopping the spread and anyone who didn’t wear them was selfish and was prolonging the pandemic. It turns out it was all a big lie.
They aren't, but they're better than doing nothing. And their primary purpose is to stop you from spreading the virus in the public rather than stop you from getting it in some other setting. In that case, they're fairly effective.

Who is this person speaking? What data is he using over and above (I can still smell)? Lots of people have said lots of things on interviews. Point me to the data.

ANY mask prevents someone infectious from spreading as much, moreso than it protects you from unmasked, infected people.

Masks are intended to impede the already-infected person from passing larger viral loads to those who are not infected. It's not so the uninfected person can be safe from infection. It's never really been about that, when it comes to masks.
Smell is how they test the fit of your N95 mask.
I went through this process when I assisted with a testing facility down south last summer.
After shaving I fit the mask to my face, we adjusted it some, and then he put a plastic 'bell' over my head and puffed in a scent and asked me if I could smell it.

I have various 3M N-95's and I've yet to wear one that prevented me from smelling more powerful vapors.
Anyone with a lick of common sense knew that cloth masks were useless from the get go. Dust masks, bandanas, the face gaiters are all equally as worthless.
Masks were always more about giving people something to do so they felt proactive about the situation.
Clearly they haven't worked, take a look around at where we are 1.5 years later. Covid is still going strong.
The mask proponents can try to spin it or minimize what they've been screaming for over a year.

and we've known that cloth masks aren't as effective as n95 or kn95 masks for the past year. They are good for keeping others from getting sick from the mask wearer, but not great at keeping the mask wearer from getting sick. That being said, they are better than no mask.

My kids went all school year wearing masks and then #CovidKim came came along and rescinding masks at 1am on a Thursday night with 2 weeks to go of school. All sick with non Covid issues when we got done. So LOL at this Bullshit. Everyone wears them they ARE effective.
How in the hell did you extrapolate all of that from me simply saying "Osterholm knows his shit?" Michael Osterholm is a VERY respected specialist in this field. If it helps you to feel "right" somehow, by all means, do it. You always succeed in turning people away, who actually need to be helped. And, at the same time, making enemies of people who are mostly on your side, already. If you would just stay out of these threads, it might save lives. But, you never do. Your ego is lethal.

If I cared enough about the person's comment, which is extremely unlikely, I'd ask what their credentials are and what research they did to come to the conclusion.

N95 will protect you in a crowded area with LOTS of virus in the air. Regular masks will not.
Regular multilayer masks will protect you in well ventilated areas, where you pass someone in short contact bursts from becoming infected. They will do little in rooms where viral loads become very high.
This has been the case since the beginning. And you've apparently forgotten all of it.
