“We have at most a year to defend American democracy, perhaps less“

That's scary. Only one year to save the republic. It didn't know it was this bad. But the guy's from Yale, so it must be true. Hopefully we'll all die of global warming before Trump can destroy the United States.

Read the interview, not just the title of the thread.

Seems like a sharp guy. I also think this quote is a good thing to remember:

"Some of the reasons some people voted for Trump make sense. You simply dismiss all of them according to your own stereotypes. It is not always as simple as the East Coast people will tell you. Trump has unleashed public racism of a kind we have not seen for decades. That is true. This racism in turn releases energies that can change the whole system. Also true. But at the same time, he would not be president without white people in crucial states who voted for Obama twice. So you can’t simply dismiss all of these people as racists, because in some cases their votes also brought us our first black president. A lot of Trump voters would have voted for Bernie Sanders, who is a Jewish socialist."

Only about half of his supporters are deplorables.

Is there no more elections?
Yes, but it's clear Trump is hell-bent on a dictatorship so he may try preventing them. He will use whatever tools he can to stay in power. Him declaring Martial Law wouldn't even be out of the question. Even if there was no imminent threat, it's clear his administration will simply make one up. Dangerous times we're in. I personally am no longer underestimating Trump. I'm taking everything he says and does ultra seriously and assuming that he and Bannon are working closely to do whatever they can to stay in power permanently.

I don't share this fear. Trump would be almost 80 if he got his second term. I don't think that's a guy who is going to lead a revolution to keep power for maybe a couple extra years that would be filled with death and doom. I could see Trump cheating to get that 2nd term. As an example if Trump was running against someone who wouldn't release their taxes, I bet he would make sure the IRS got a copy to him so that he could release them himself. Obama was too damn honest.

He is setting things up for his kids to rule the free world. Brilliant man. The only man you will ever read about in history books from here on out.

Even if Trump is willing to retire, which would be totally out of character since he literally has no life but work, Bannon is only 63. So the two of them could try preventing future elections to make sure that their vision of America isn't washed away in a few years if through no other avenue, but installing Bannon as the next successor.

It sounds nuts that I'm even talking about this, but after watching how Trump and Bannon have behaved, I don't think it's something that we no longer have to think about. Trump has already declared war on the Courts, the press, and the people. Declaring war on the limitation that a president can only serve two terms is no longer out of the question.

He doesn't believe in facts, or the law. All he believes in is his own ideologies. Trying to rewrite the rules to stay in power wouldn't be beneath him.

If you seriously believe that you need medical help. Good lord.

I'm generally all for getting stirred up. I think if libs had been more stirred up they would have pulled us out of this fire. So if this helps you get people excited, I see some logic. But its only going to activate the crazy wing. Trump has shown us the danger in activating the crazy wing. I'd prefer Ds not start arming themselves for an armed revolution. Unlike cons, libs would actually get out into the streets with them. Mass liberal armed protests is just what Trump would need to carry out your nightmare.

I don't agree with these sentiments. It's obvious Trump and the Republicans are arming up and ready to fight, imprisoning people if they have to. If the libs wait until they start rounding people up, it'll already be too late.

You mean Hillary was right?

Who has been imprisoned? What new armaments have been procured? Are you trolling?
Trump has already tried outlawing entire counties based on his hate of Islam. He has already declared war on the press. And he's declared war on the Courts. Just a few days ago, mass rounding up of immigrants happened in cities like Los Angeles. Pretend like these liberty violations are nothing to worry about, but the are. They are extremely worrisome.

Oh come on. If you were right Trump wouldn't be appealing and rewriting his EO. He would just order the original one be carried out and give the courts the bird. He isn't doing that. He is honoring the court orders and following the normal path to resolve this conflict in our system. And the deportation was planned before Trump ever took office. Trump was caught in another lie trying to take credit about that very event. Trump is deplorable, but try to keep your head in the game.

Can I ask you why you have any confidence in this administration, nat? Trump isn't honoring anything. He's attacking the courts with everything he's got. And you know what? Given enough time, he can pack the courts with his own federal appointees who will obey his commands.

I'm not sure you get how much power a president actually has. If he wants, he doesn't even have to go through Congress. He can simply install his people during recess.

Trump may not have the numbers in the courts now, but give him enough time and he will in the future. He already owns the DoJ. He solely has the power to nominate vacancies for the SCOTUS. To me, it's not at all out of the question that he'll just wait until he gets his own judges in there enough to rule and overturn whatever he wants.

People assumed wrongly that Hillary was in. The woman's march held in September or October may have swung the election. Heck Homeland has a female president elect. The DNC hitched their wagon to the wrong nag. Consequences are coming due. The message needs altering but so far there has only been doubling down on both sides.

I think he just called you stupid, Nat.

I answered your first question already. He is following the court orders. He doesn't like it, he doesn't agree with it, but he is following it. He hasn't told the TSA to ignore the court order. When he does that, we can entertain your point. I'm sure Trump will get many federal judges confirmed that align more with his thinking. Elections have that consequence. But his current SCOTUS nominee is very skeptical of executive overreach, so its not at all clear he would be a rubber stamp for Trump.
