#10 Sargent

He is a Redshirt Sophomore by the way. But i really like him because of how hard he runs. Not the most athletically gifted guy but is a good piece to have.

Yeah I like him so far but I'm not completely sold on anything offensively. We look out of sync, all facets. The running attack is iffy and the passing is spotty at best. If we can become even an average offense quickly, we will be almost impossible to beat.

Agree with everyone. Our offense leaves a lot to be desired at the moment, but there are flashes with him. It's still early in his career with Iowa, I'm thinking he just needs to get comfortable.

And thanks David for correcting me earlier, didn't realize he was a RS Soph. Still lots of time for him!

Peyton Mansell has a TD too.

Man, I'd love to watch his mobility for a quarter to see if/how it impacts a defense. Nate is struggling. Peyton was 9 for 11 in the spring game.

I know, #2 QB is the most popular guy on the team. I'd give Mansell the ball for a half vs. UNI and see what happens. And I sure as hell wouldn't let Nate play a full game vs. Wisconsin if he plays like he did last year.

Just my opinion. Have a nice day. :)

No back looks good ... not even that Akrum kid ... when the holes aren't there. Ask David Montgomery for one.... But when the holes have been there, Toren and Sargent have made the most of them.

Well I can't dispute that, but it seemed at times that Akrum made chicken salad out of chicken shit.

I think we will see Mansell play quite a bit against UNI (2nd half, assuming a considerable lead).

As for Stanley -- and I hereby stipulate that I have not compiled any stats -- it seems to me that Nate plays much better in a no-huddle type of tempo …. not a hurry-up offense, a "keep it moving" offense, so to speak.

Also, I stopped basing any serious evaluations of players based on the Spring scrimmage. For a variety of reasons, it's just not a reliable predictor for the player's position (vis-à-vis other players) or future performance.

I would take it further. Practice alone can't give you all the variables. (but you're not there in practice man like the coaches ... yeah read the 2nd sentence again). That's why I'll always be alone in the wilderness arguing for plenty of touches for the backup to show what he can do with normal play-calling.

Exactly. When your passing game sucks as much as ours typically does the defense can focus on run like we see so much

He did when he wasn't getting hit 2-4 yards deep in the backfield, and that sure seemed to happen a lot.

So far that part of the game is better than last year.

I hear you, and Im not saying it's justified, but how many times in 20 years has Ferentz gone to the 2nd string??

Saw it somewhere, but didn’t Sargent have a nice blitz pick up on the pass to B. Smith?

I mentioned in another thread that in the NIU game if the catchable throws had been caught and the big runs weren't negated by penalties the score would have been closer to 47-7 and that ends that but vs ISU (which has a fairly good defense) there were also dropped passes and a missed field goal but really it all starts with a successful rushing attack which then opens up the passing attack. This is not so much a Stanley issue rather it is a rushing issue.

Except Akrum would occasionally be thrown a pass in space and house it. These two guys (Toren, Sargent) are not going to run away from DB's or juke them out of their shorts. They are not elite athletes you see on a lot of teams that can house it with speed and are hard to bring down one on one. Lot better than 2009 when Paki Omeara was our starting RB vs UNI.

I do agree you need to block and scheme to create some room to run. David Montgomery is pretty good back, but with the focus Iowa defense put on him, he couldn't do much by himself.
