OCTOBER 19, 2020 UPDATE:

OCTOBER 12, 2020 UPDATE:

As expected, per Jeff Goodman (see tweet that follows), it looks like Iowa will open its season on November 25th when they host their own MTE (Multi-Team Event) that includes Southern and North Carolina Central. There is expected to be one more team that will join them.

NOTE: The first three games OF THE ORIGINAL SCHEDULE constituted an exempt multi-team event (MTE) that Iowa was hosting. This home "tournament" was considered a classic; it was not a traditional tournament. Iowa, Southern, North Carolina Central and South Dakota were to all play each other. South Dakota was to host two games before playing at Iowa.

ORIGINAL Nonconference Schedule:

Game 1. Nov 10 vs Southern (17-15 last season, 13-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference)

Game 2. Nov 13 vs NC Central (18-13, 13-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference)

Game 3. Nov 16 or Nov 20 vs South Dakota (20-12, 10-6 Summit League)

OCTOBER 8, 2020 UPDATE:

Before covid-19, it was highly likely we were going to see Iowa at either Villanova or Creighton for the Gavitt Games.

Now it appears the Gavitt Games have been canceled.

And it looks like Nov 1 is earliest we will see a conference game schedule based on this tweet.

Fran wants to play a 27 game schedule, which is the maximum # of games a team can play.

Does this 27 game schedule sound about right? As you can see, there appears 2 games yet to be determined.

20--conference games
2--hosting a multi team event (MTE)
1--Gonzaga
1--Iowa State
1--B1G/ACC Challenge (N Carolina or Louisville?)
1--To be Announced w/ Gavitt Games likely canceled
1--To Be Announced

May 22, 2020 Nonconference Schedule Update:

This month the B1G/ACC & Gavitt Games match ups are being discussed.

Andy Katz says:

* Iowa should get either North Carolina or Louisville at CHA.

* For Gavitt Games, he says send Iowa or Wisconsin to Villanova and the other one to Creighton.

We can't host Duke or Virginia because the home teams are set for the B1G/ACC Challenge.

Home teams for ACC/B1G Challenge:
Duke
Virginia
Iowa
Wisconsin
Rutgers (@MrsScrew )

And the Gavitt Games. ;)

So that's 7 of the 11.

I just found it interesting that Iowa is using Global Sports Management for scheduling of 4 nonconf games.

Have they ever used an outside company to do this before? What the hell is Barta doing? LOL

Lol really?

You guys would get killed @ Duke.

Iowa might beat them though.
Virginia & Duke appear to be the top 2 teams next year.

Since Iowa is the best B1G team per every preseason rankings so far, which would you want to play (hopefully at CHA)?

Before you answer, remember that Virginia is the defending National Champions. ;)

Personally, I hope we get Duke at home (@Hawksfor3 )

3 Big 10 teams don't play in the Gavitt games each season-no guarantee right now we'll be playing in it (although probability is we will).

Facts before speculation.

Here's what I've come up with, looking at past home and away schedules.....possible ACC opponents at home, Louisville or Florida St. Possible Big East opponents away, Creighton, Villanova, or Providence. Wouldn't argue playing any of these teams.

Barta doesn't do the basketball scheduling.

If Iowa was to play Duke, I would be shocked if they played in CHA. More likely to be in Chicago. Virginia on the other hand would probably be played in CHA.

ISU should be downright bad next year. Potentially worse than this year. Literally everyone who played in a game this year will be gone. Two players left during the season. Three transferred out. And Tyrese is a first round draft pick on his potential. The other two starters are out of eligibility....

That leaves 4 high schoolers and a sit out transfer... Yikes

That would be incorrect.
The previous year's standings are a factor, but they are not the only relevant factor in making the schedule. For instance, typically the last place team from the previous year sits out for the ACC, but there are provisions for how many times teams sit out in a time frame.

Projections for the current season are not part of the decision.

it's basically ESPN picking the best matchups for TV ratings they want to see which is somewhat based on projected standings and somewhat on name recognition.

Unless ISU becomes a Chicago St with a high 300 rating, it's not going to be a blow out...Fran is not a coach that runs up a score to embarrass another coach. If the score would get out of hand, Iowa has plunty of bench players to get their feet wet...

What if our bench players are better than their starters?

I don't see any way that ISU is better next year than they were last season.
This will likely be the worst ISU team in 20+ years.

I personally would like ISU to be a little better next year for 2 reasons and I am not talking about NCAA but mid level NIT seed and around .500. First, helps Iowa’s SOS. Second, the last thing JP wants to do is can SP. JP lets his arrogance screw up his coaching decisions and lets coaches stay way too long, see e.g, Rhoads, McDermott, Kevin Jackson. Plus, no money on the buy-out so a little improvement allows Pollard to say he likes the momentum. SP is driving ISU into dark days so the longer he is there the better IMO.

I say stay within the SWAC for the remaining available non-con options:
Alabama A&M(343), Ark Pine Bluff(348) and Miss Valley St.(351).

GB can get a package deal and maintain the high quality scheduling that is his hallmark.

When was the last time that Gary Barta (assuming that is who you mean by "GB") scheduled an Iowa men's basketball game?
