Why would they go to 15 when 16 is the magic bracket number? 3 DNQs, 4 single byes and 4 double byes. WTF? Why not 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, 3 vs 14, etc., etc...

The number one seed of any conference really should never have to win more than three games to win the tournament. Although I think they should find a way to get all 18 teams in even if the top two get byes to the semis and the other 16 have to win three times just to get a chance in the semis. Helps make or break the bubble teams with more opporunities to earn quality wins and rewards the regular season champs now that it's largely a fair schedule.

I agree with everything until the end. If anything, the regular season championship is unfortunately being diluted a bit precisely because the first and second place teams could play drastically different schedules.

Wish I could have witnessed 18 games where you simply play each other team home and away!

Not really anymore, you play everyone once except three teams, and chances of those three teams all being terrible or great to give someone a significant advantage or disadvantage is pretty unlikely. About 14-16 of the teams will all be similar most years with an occassional outlier every year. There is never a B10 team no matter how good that I don't think Iowa can beat at home on any given night, and I'd bet most fans feel that way about their team. A lot of parity in the conference overall, I think the schedule is more fair than it's ever been. The road and home draw isn't going to be lopsided either with every team splitting west coast opponents two games each way.

Because the BIG is smarter than some message board poster. Just ask 'em.

They could always go with the Sun Belt Conference method. 🤮

An 11-seed would need to win seven games in a row. Seven straight days of winning basketball without a break. The bottom four teams could be on a five-game win streak before playing a completely fresh and rested top seed.

You don't want the meaningless weekend money grab to hurt the contenders' chances in the real tourney.

The bottom teams' fans aren't traveling and no one is tuning in to watch them anyway. This arrangement optimizes the TV ratings/tickets/merch take, while still letting the real contenders save something in the tank for the main event.

Day 1: 12 vs 17, 13 vs 16, 11 vs 18, 14 vs 15
Day 2: 9 vs 12, 8 vs 13, 10 vs 11, 7 vs 14
Day 3: 4 vs 9, 5 vs 8, 3 vs 10, 6 vs 7
Day 4: 4 vs 5, 3 vs 6
Day 5: 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3
Day 6: 1 vs 2

Sorry, not smart enough to put it into chart form here. Nobody has to play more than 6 games. Top 4 teams don't have to play more than 4 games and top 2 teams are rewarded with only 2 games.

You'd see a pretty big cost increase to add the three worst teams. The tournament goes from 5 days to 6 days. You have three more travel groups to coordinate and house. There are three additional games, but they're the worst teams and there is little demand for those games TV-wise or ticket-wise.

I think there is a huge disincentive to extend the tournament another day just to accommodate the bottom 2-3 teams, maybe another day of TV revenue could change that. But there really is no reason not to just put 16 teams in and have 4 games the first day as well.

For those smaller conferences like the Sun Belt and WCC, I think those conferences are hedging heavily to give their top teams an advantage to ensure their best teams make the NCAA tournament, where one upset could mean alot of money for the conference.

I thought back-to-backs in the NBA was rough!
