I was told by almost every beat writer how important this year's portal was to sending kirk off in style with 1-2 more successful years. Fast forward today and this may have been a bigger disappointment than Phil's defense returning 8 starters and falling flat on their face.

I honestly think it has more to do with scheme and fitting into the "iowa way" than not matching NIL $. Kirk and co would rather have strong personality traits than skill and its showing.

As it sits today this team wins 4-6 games, kirk falls below 60% win percentage making him ineligible for the HOF, and finishes his legacy laying an egg.

Two things Iowa has a done a good job of in the portal:

One, filling needs without just throwing money at the best players available. The additions they have made to this point have all made sense, and should be impactful.

I’d bet my lunch that the DL additions Iowa has made will be better than some 4* player that couldn’t crack the depth chart at USC, but no doubt the USC kid will be a higher rated portal player.

Two, Iowa does a great job with retention. Guys like Jones, Dunker, and Hurkett won’t show up on your portal rankings, but they should.

Every year there are posters predicting a disastrous season. Someday it will happen, but they do not seem to be returning a bottom of the barrel roster, and they are obviously going to add a few more portal players that will probably make a lot of sense.

Two things can be true. Iowa has so far lost very few players to the portal which speaks to an effective retention strategy. On a net basis that makes Iowa's lackluster portal acquisition success less disastrous than it would appear.

With that said, Iowa has very critical needs on the offensive side of the ball and in the secondary. It's not just me saying this. It's everyone that covers and manages the team that would attest to this. The staff's portal activities support the outside perception that they lack a starting QB, a starting WR, and a starting CB. They have struck out on all 3 of these positions to date, landing only a backup QB. That's not a recipe for ongoing success or turning around an offense that is still mired in the last century.

I agree with you on every point you made.

None of that changes any opinion I stated in my first post. Like you said, two things can be true…lots of things can be true.

We can make a final assessment after they are finished. They do not appear to be finished, and seem to be working to address all the shortcomings we agree on.

These players are returning because A) they arent future NFL starters B) no other top tier team is seeking them via portal.

A is generally correct. B is not. There are opportunities for many of these players to get paid if Iowa is unwilling to do so. Nearly every team has holes to fill and money to spend. Their value wouldn't be significant, but there is value.

You would likely be correct with respect to the QB, WR positions, where Iowa has loaded up with players who have shown little to garner much attention on the open market. They would likely have trouble finding a p4 home anywhere else that would result in significantly more playing time or NIL funds.

B is objectively wrong. You are firing at the target with your back to it. All of those guys would be getting offers from high level power two programs. Bostick ended up at TA&M for God sakes.

A is debatable. Two of the three are surefire draft picks. Remains to be seen if they are starters? I’ll be shocked if Dunker is never a starter, and mildly surprised if Jones never is.

I can only hope they strike gold in the spring.

Penn St is returning playoff caliber players. Iowa is not.
Maybe. How's Minnesota doing signing 13 3* (which puts them in 4th place on the list)? Is it roster improvement or simply roster churn? Would you be happier if Iowa signed 13 'non-playoff caliber' players so that they showed up in 4th place? Would that show the the IA coaches are working the portal?

These portal rankings don’t mean shit. There are so many factors such as needs and retention that they don’t factor in at all.
Correct. Tell me who Iowa’s has lost to the portal that actually hurts? Not saying wouldn’t like Iowa to get more quality players but also have to consider who and how many guys leave. Like when Jestin Jacobs left we got nick Jackson.

What difference makers has Nebby, Minny, Illinios , Purdue added? I guess WI has gotten 3 4* although it looks like they lost 2 4* and 25 players overall.
Well I’m hoping they’re shooting for higher than those programs.

Illinois added Altmeyer and Franklin and were both great.

Minnesota added Brosmer and Sean Tyler who were really good.
