polls are based on nothing but imagination.

let's face it... nobody is watching every game.

Those saying rankings don't matter aren't seeing the big picture in my opinion. Kentucky beats unranked Vanderbilt 14-7 yesterday and jumps 3 spots. We shut out unranked Maryland 23-0 and move up 1 spot. That just perpetuates the SEC is all powerful narrative bullshit. Miami doesn't even play and goes from unranked to ranked. That just perpetuates the name program bullshit. Ranking get you more mentions on talk radio, ESPN, social media. And that matters to recruits. I agree that they have minimal impact on the team with regards to the practice field, locker room, or on game day, but to say they don't matter just isn't true.
Wait another week for the CFP as their rankings override all useless media and coach poll in any and all broadcasts.

I don't care where Ped State is rated right now. What I care about is Iowa's performance next Saturday. Prove it on the field then the polls will take care of themselves.
Exactly right. All the Hawks need to worry about is beating the lions. Everything else will fall into place after that.......

I posted a thread about this some time ago. I do agree to some degree that if we win out, we will be where we should be in the polls. BUT, that is only true if the teams already arbitrarily ranked ahead of us lose. Do we jump Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, or Texas if they and we all win out including our by hypothetical win over Michigan in Indy? It isn't clear is it. What have any of them but program perception over that hypothetical Iowa team?

The system is wrong. Polls should start officially with the CFP committee this coming week. No official poll should exist by AP or USA Today.

I'm not saying the Sagarin ratings are the end all be all, but they illustrate an elimination of the bias that clouds rankings historically.

It's difficult for me to argue with this as a counter to the "just win out" people. I just hope for 12-1 and an appearance in the CFP - no matter how it happens.

automatic bids for Conference Champions would fix this problem.

Just because Iowa 3-1 and Wisconsin 3-1 had a bye week does not make Northwestern 4-1 better than them. Judging off of losses, they are tied for first with two other teams.
Thanks for explaining this more politely than I would have cared to. Also, this is not the schedule/results of a #10 team:

Thu, Aug 30
@Purdue
W31-27
1-0 (1-0)

Sat, Sep 8
vsDuke
L21-7
1-1 (1-0)

Sat, Sep 15
vsAkron
L39-34
1-2 (1-0)

Sat, Sep 29
vs14 Michigan
L20-17
1-3 (1-1)

Sat, Oct 6
@20 Michigan State
W29-19
2-3 (2-1)

Sat, Oct 13
vsNebraska
W34-31 OT
3-3 (3-1)

Sat, Oct 20
@Rutgers
W18-15
4-3 (4-1)

the poll I shared with you is unbiased.
Northwestern technically is in first

I would prefer an unbiased poll over a poll that is based on imagination....

with the AP and Coaches Poll... thats what you have.... polls based purely on imagination.

I think this issue could easily be solved with Conference Champions getting automatic bids.

All based on circular reasoning. The same arguments Cyclone fans are posing now were the same arguments being made last year before the B1G Ten nearly ran the table last bowl season (West was undefeated).
Ya, da B1G bowl record last year was benefited by not having a team in CFP. Ie each bowl game had a higher place B1G team, than if tOSU had a made da playoff. :)

Why does the Big12 still suck in the bowl seasons when they don’t have a playoff team?

I know why. Do you?

Normally I’m a don’t give a shit about rankings guy, but this is fvcking bullshit. We deserve to be ranked higher. Anybody that is actually paying attention knows we are legit.

The system is wrong for only having a four team playoff. Even with a larger playoff pool, conference champions may not be the correct answer either with unbalanced schedules.

You total dipsh#t! There's no way you're actually that stupid.

Conference bowl picks come after all NY6 games are filled, not just the CFP. The B1G had THREE NY6 teams last year, meaning the bowl with the "B1G #2 selection" actually got #4. On the other hand, the Big 12 had only 1 NY6 participant, so their bowl selections went true to form. Every other P-5 conference had 2 NY6 selections. So, if anything, it was the Big 12 whose "bowl record last year was benefited" by the NY6 selection process.

Tried taking a shot at the B1G, and instead made a fool of yourself. Congrats!

We have not beaten anyone. Beat Penn State and we can talk. Lose to Penn State and none of this matters.

What can you do? We messed up in week 4. Just win, And we will get what we deserve. Had we beat who we should have, we would be ranked much higher...

As for UT stumbling in their opener verse the Turtles, it is the first game of the season... If they played now, it would be significantly different. That noted, I do believe that Texas is overrated.

Same record as Texas. Only common opponent they lost to, we blanked 23-0. #6 vs #18. Makes sense.

This is why preseason and rankings afterward matter. If Iowa was perceived to be a top 25 team to start the season (not that we deserved to be), we'd be higher. And they aren't going away. Rankings give the media something to talk about. The NCAA isn't going to give that up.
