The last year blue bloods Duke, UNC and Kentucky were not ranked in the top 20 at the same week was 1961! The only real blue blood in the top 10 is Kansas and they aren’t the same Kansas as they were in past years. Wonder if this is just a one year thing or a sign of things to come. Teams like Gonzaga, Baylor and Villanova usually have 3 and 4 year players. Iowa fits into that mode, especially with Garza becoming the force he has become. He’s a physically mature man dominating players.. His teammates, while good players, aren’t bonafide NBA prospects, but with Garza, they have become one of the top teams in college ball this season. Iowa is unlikely to attract the one and done players the Dukes and Kentuckys do and I am fine with that. As long as they can attract 3 and 4 star recruits who want to stick around and develop as a team, they will be in contention for their share of Big Ten titles and deep tournament runs. Plus fans can really relate to guys that stick around. I’m a relocated Iowan in Arizona and the enthusiasm for the Wildcats have faded in part because of their recruiting scandal but more so because the long time season ticket holders don’t relate to players who are here for only a semester.

No wonder Coach K wanted to shut down the season. His team sucks.

Add in it is easier for the Gonzaga’s and Villanova’s of the world to be able to dominate in their leagues with inferior opponents. Then compare to the B1G every year, it is hard for a team like Iowa to compete at a high level with so many good teams in the league year in and year out. Hope this is the year Iowa can win the B1G and end the 41 year drought!
