That was the last time the Hawks made it to the Sweet 16. 30 freaking years! Next year will be 31. Hawkeye basketball is somewhat of a joke. They haven't won a Big Ten title since 1978-79, which they shared it, and not an outright title since the early '70s. This just blows my mind. You would think they would have won a regular-season title or two just by sheer luck.

NC State was no slouch though, they also had five future NBAers. Gugliotta was only a frosh so he didn't play in the game. Double OT game, I see someone has it up on youtube right now.
Too painful to watch. Just like so many other NCAA tournament losses.

Ah yes, the Rodney Monroe game. He lit up for like 40 pts. He was unstoppable.

One of my all-time favorite ACC players. I was a Duke hater from the beginning. Became an NC St fan as a 10 year-old watching their run through the NCAA tournament in '83. My always rooting for underdogs traces directly to that team. And I never stopped rooting for them given their perennial underdog status to UNC and Duke. Corchiani and Monroe playing in Cameron was always fun to watch. Great games. Monroe almost always played really, really well there. Monroe was so smooth.

i lived in the triangle until i was 17 when we moved to NE iowa but still followed nc state and unc closely (state schools always got more press so were easier to follow)...monroe was criticized for how poorly he played when at duke...i just looked it up...in 4 games he shot 23-68...his games were 6-9, 5-16, 5-26, 7-17.

Huh, my memory is of NC St giving Duke trouble in Cameron while Fire & Ice was the backcourt. Maybe he hit big shots? Maybe I only saw the 6-9, 7-17 games?

Now I want to watch them again. Chucky Brown was nice, too. And I think Gugliotta played with them for a year or two, right? Avie Lester. Holy shit did that name just pop into my head?

wasn't Chucky Brown the one that hit the shot that put the dagger in the Hawks that year? That name sticks out for some reason. That was a tough one to swallow.

You're smokin rocks.

'88-'89 team was better than '87-'88 team. Would have been a great ride had RT been able to play.

I don't know about that. The 87 team was deeper and although BJ, Roy, and Horton were just sophomores they seemed to play better as a team than before all the hype. Either way, we haven't had a collection of talent anywhere near the late 80's since
