The 1996-1997 Iowa Hawkeyes have the NCAA scoring record at 170 correct?

Here are those brackets:
http://wrestlingstats.com/ncaa/pdf/brackets/NCAA 1997.pdf

118: Whitmer. 1st. Two bonus points (two MDs). 22 pts

126: Mena. 2nd. Two bonus points (two MDs). 18 pts.

134: Ironside. 1st. Three bonus pts (Fall, MD). 23 pts.

142: Gilliss. 6th. Six bonus pts (two falls, two MDs). 3 Adv pts. 15 pts.

150: McIlravy. 1st. Four bonus pts (two TF, MD). 24 pts.

158. Williams. 1st. Five and a half bonus pts (two falls, TF). 25.5 pts.

167: Uker. 5th. Four bonus pts (two falls). 3 Adv pts. 14 pts.

177: Ersland. R12. No bonus. 2 Adv pts. 2 pts.

190 Fullhart. 1st. Three bonus pts (Fall, MD). 23 pts.

275: Hand. R12. Two bonus pts (Fall). 1.5 Adv pts. 3.5 pts.

I’ve gone over this several times. Hand also received a MFFT. They must have not given bonus for that in 1997; the only way I get to 170 is excluding it. So I think that team scores 172 points in today’s scoring. Someone please correct me.

Hard to see that record going down. Five Champions, Six Finalists, Eight AAs and Two R12s. 31.5 bonus points. Ten scoring wrestlers.

Thanks! Those were the days.

I’m curious what these guys were ranked coming out of high school. Anyone have that info?

Someone needs to call Tommy and tell him to start focusing recruiting efforts on national champs.

The strange thing about 1997 is it was very surprising we won, let alone setting the scoring record. The season was a mess - McIlravy hardly wrestled due to concussions, Whitmer couldn't get out from bottom, Gable had hip replacement surgery and was gone for a lot of the season. Nobody looked good and Oklahoma State was a power house.

And, BTW, Uker pinned Slay about three times - so add that to his pin total.

I don't think they had p4p rankings back then, but Williams and McIlravy were both top 10 p4p guys for sure, if not #1. Mena was an elite recruit as well. Only guy who would have been higher than him at his weight was Jeff McGinness, but McGinness was only a Jr. when Mena was a Sr. Ironside and Fullhart would have been top 10 at their weights, but not p4p. The others were all "room guys" according to the early 90s Hawkeye Report forum, which was just a street corner outside a bar in Waterloo, Iowa.

Gillis and Hand were top 20 guys.

The guys that were on the ASICS AA team are as follows:

Lincoln-1992(1)
Mena-1992(2)
Williams-1993(1)
Ironside-1993(HM)
Fullhart-1193(HM)
Gillis-1995(1)
Hand-1995(2)

I only did their H.S. senior seasons. ASICS teams comprised of three teams and an honorable mentions at each wt..Three top tenish guys, two top 20ish and two top 50. Whitmer, Uker and Ersland were not ranked.

That would probably make the two HM’s as top 40’s?

No. If we went strictly by #s, top three teams X 13 wts comes out to 39. Each wt had 5 HMs which equals 65. Combine them all, that's your top 100 ranked (non class specific). Here is 1993's class:

So to really drill down on Top P4P for the senior class, kick out all the underclassman. These ASICS lists were normally top heavy with seniors though. I think Ironside said that he won two state titles coming out of high school but he was nothing special IIRC. It was getting murdered by the Brands bros in practice every day that got him to where he was going.

It seems like every off-season, a few optimistic fans of a couple of teams post tongue-in-cheek about how next year the scoring record is going down. That’s what made me look it up.

I think the record is safe. That team performance was unbelievable. You had a 6th place finisher score 15 team points. Your four non-finalists scored 12 bonus points. I don’t see it being repeated.

Edit: I’m applying today’s scoring rules above

Gotcha - thx. So I scored it right under today’s scoring but not 1997’s. I was going nuts trying to figure out why it wasn’t 172!

Got me thinking...how many times have the NCAAs been decided by COB Friday night? I don't know.
