This is kind of a paraphrase, but this morning on CNBC's Squawk Box I heard Jim Cramer, who is a Democrat and actually fairly liberal, blame the goverment for the first quarter contraction in the economy. He said something along the lines of:

This is very subpar growth and I think a lot of it is the government not helping at all. I know that there's been some hiring, but small business has been totally constrained by the government. This is the type of number you’re going to see...we're not going to see the growth we need until the government recognizes that small business needs help and does not need to be crimped.

That's not word for word, but I think it's pretty close. If Cramer is saying this, I have to think that other moderate Democrats are on the same page. Something really needs to change.

Interesting, i heard the same thing and felt he was referring to congress.

Interesting. I thought Congress was the government.

I never said which part government was the problem, just noted that a self-identified Democrat said government was a problem for small business. I think that dgordo just assumed something that wasn't stated.

I think there are some pretty logical explanations for the statistic. I believe they will be rectified next quarter. The wether was horrid...and remember the ports were all locked up, too. Just sayin'...........I see people out and about spending their cash. They are buying something.
Where I work, it was a pretty flat Christmas season when all was said and done Solid but not quite up to "hopespectations". This month (May) we're having the best $$$ month in our (12 year) history. We're busy.

Haven't you noticed? Obama doesn't need congress.

should I interpret this as cons agreeing we need more Kaynsean stimulus action?

Keynes, natural. Has the long A sound, but spelled with an E. Keynesian. And, no, even more government deficit spending is not the answer.

As Cramer mentioned, one thing we can do is help small business, which has historically been key to job and economic growth. That sector is lagging, and needs help with burdensome regulations and rules, as well as some help in the financial areas. When even moderate Democrats like Cramer see it, you know it's not just partisan bickering. It's a very real problem.

Business welfare isn't the answer. But I do agree less regulation is desperately needed.

I'm not talking about welfare - I'm talking about doing things that make it easier for small businesses to obtain financing, among other things. With private dollars, not government dollars.

I don't disagree with him. Big business has bought Washington and rigged the system against the little guy, so it's no wonder small businesses struggle. The government should be doing more for the regular guy.

This is pretty much what the libs have been arguing for this entire time but the Republicans have gotten in the way of.

The libs want to double the minimum wage and give more power to the IRS, OSHA, EPA, etc. You think that helps small business?

The biggest problem small businesses have isn't that they are being regulated. It's that they are being regulated but the big boys aren't. So, yes, I think that if you leveled the playing ground so that everyone had to play under the same rules, that would most definitely help small businesses compete.

Thanks. What rules do you want to get rid of? Why were those rules implemented and what impact would removing them have?
