I know I'm old school but I like that he doesn't use transfers unless it's an emergency. Let the young guys develop.
A big was an emergency and we didn't come through. I was really excited about this team and I feel like they are missing so many fundamentals that it is absolutely killing us.
You guys played really well and handed it to us. Congrats.
Fran couldn’t figure his way out of a wet T-shirt, let alone some defense, rebounding or this new fangled transfer portal thingy.
College athletics shouldn't be about winning free agency/transfer portal.

It’s OK to feel that way as a fan, but as a coach, you need to do the most that the rules will allow. That cow ain’t coming back in the barn.
It always amazes me how dumb the average Cyclone fan is, coupled with how proud they are that all of their fans are alums.

To be fair, Otzelberger didn’t get a choice this year. He can’t field a team with three scholarship guys, he had to hit the portal.
TJ does a good job. That is a well coached team. Shots fell last night, but that isn’t guaranteed every night. They’re disciplined and active on defense and get after the boards. Took TJ 12 months to get brand new players to do that. As for Fran??? Well…..
Iowa State simply took Iowa out of their game. Tenacious defense, more team speed and desire. If the teams played again in the results would be the same.
We wish we knew what you are talking about…the term “tenacious defense” doesn’t register with us Hawk fans.
It's OK for us to feel that way. However, to remain competitive, it behooves a coach (and a program) to adjust to the times, or fall behind.
Funny how ISU can completely turn their program around in one year, and yet there are numerous Hawk fans that are afraid to get rid of Fran because of Lickliter. As if Iowa is guaranteed to hit the skids if we change head coach, and Fran’s results are the best we can possibly hope for.
While I get where you’re coming from, I don’t really understand how winning free agency/transfer portal is much different then doing whatever it takes to get some high school kid to enroll at your school in the first place.
perhaps some kid is filled with so much bs to begin with and goes to that school for a year and figures out that it’s not what he thought it was.
now he realizes he’s a fit for let’s say iowa, you don’t want Fran to go after that kid?
Did Fran go and recruit him or did the guy ask to come to Iowa?
I'm not clear on the specifics of transferring, but I think it should be on the student to go find a different school, this go around, rather than schools contacting the player once he makes it known he is transferring.
The student should have to put in the leg work and inquire about the schools he'd want to transfer to, and the coaches should only then be allowed to respond, rather than the coaches seeking out the player and telling him what they can offer him if he switches.
I think for the most part, that's more of how it usually works anyway (again I don't really know the specifics), but with the new transfer portal rules, it has become more like free agency and who can "outbid" others for a player who decides to transfer, especially if he is a decent player.

Either one. What’s the difference between recruiting a kid out of high school, a kid out of juco or a kid that just wants to go to a different 4 year university?
Let’s say Jack nunge was never recruited by Fran and went somewhere else. He hit the portal like he did and you wouldn’t want him on this team this year? The guy did nothing wrong just wanted a fresh start on life.
TJ is now 2-0 against Iowa. Don't forget his Jackrabbits beat one of your better teams ever.
So you didn't like the idea of Uthoff being brought into the Iowa program after being a transfer?

Unless he's regularly bringing in top 30 players out of h.s. with every class then using the portal well is a necessary part of a a coach's job.
So do you even want a coach to recruit a player out of high school? It’s not much different in my opinion. It can be all about money straight out of high school the same as it can be after entering the transfer portal.
personally I like the transfer portal in the regard that they might not have made the right choice straight out of high school. Why should a student be punished for that. I’m pretty sure a lot of people in this world have been recruited to a different job or quit their first job they had after high school.
Having my best friend a huge ISU fan I’ve never acquired a dislike for them. My friend never attended ISU or any college but he had lunch with Jim Gibbons last week. I think if you’re a farmer or in the agriculture business more are fans of ISU than Iowa.
There is no excuse for giving Austin Ash a scholly and not bringing in a post. None. Horrible scholarship management by Fran. Terrible.

I believe Fran tried to get a bigger big (post), but he failed. This isn't an excuse, just what happened.
However, I think Iowa and it's coaching staff needs to be ready to play the transfer portal game and put feelers out there that they are ready to do business this way. That's the way it's going to work going forward.
I want a national championship, and if that means shutting down free agency in order to give us a better chance to even the odds, then so be it.
At this point, I would be happy to see the Hawks win 2 games in the BTT.
An early start, on a Sunday, before finals week, after an intense game on Thursday.
Let down in sports are a very real thing.
1. I think it's a tad early to say the ISU program has turned around. It's greatly improved.
