Iowa reported 2,157 new COVID-19 cases over the course of the past week Wednesday, for an average of 308 new infections per day.
The seven-day average is the highest it’s been since May 12, when it was 334.
Iowa also reported 13 new, confirmed deaths over the past week, for an average of two per day.
The Iowa Department of Public Health moved from daily to weekly reports of coronavirus statistics earlier this month as infections were decreasing and vaccines had become widely available.
Vaccinations
Over 9,500 Iowans became fully vaccinated in the past week, for a total of 1,479,084 Iowans ages 12 and older. That amounts to 55.27 percent of the population that is eligible for vaccines and 46.88 percent of the total population.
In Linn County, 120,441 residents now are fully vaccinated, or 66.75 percent of the population age 16 and older.
In Johnson County, 88,641 residents, or 71.3 percent of the population age 16 and older, were fully vaccinated as of Wednesday.
New cases
Linn and Johnson both were among the 26 counties that reported double-digit increases or more during the seven-day period.
Linn County reported 121 new cases, for a seven-day average of 17.
Johnson County reported 58 new cases, for a seven-day average of eight.
Polk County saw the largest increase, with 324 new cases in the past week. Black Hawk County had the second-largest increase, with 170, followed by Linn County and then Scott County with 104 new cases.
Deaths
Eleven of the 13 new, confirmed deaths occurred in July, with one each in April and May.
Two of the deaths were in Dubuque County, while the following counties reported one death each: Black Hawk, Boone, Cerro Gordo, Clayton, Clinton, Des Moines, Jackson, Marion, Wapello, Webster and Winneshiek.
Three of the deaths were among individuals ages 41 to 60, seven were between 61 and 80, and three were older than 80.
Long-term care
One long-term care facility is experiencing an outbreak, defined as three or more cases among residents and staff.

While that number is the highest since May, it’s much lower than during the pandemic’s peak last fall.
