That is what his coach thinks.

Underwood thinks because he missed most of the game he was kicked out of, that should count as part of the suspension. He also complains about the timing of the suspension not being good. Tell your player not to do stupid things at bad times then.

Is 2 games enough? I would have put it at 4.

There is no magic right answer here. I would have been fine with just 1 game suspension, or a 3-game suspension. Or no suspension beyond getting kicked out of the game against Purdue. Conference is probably right in making him sit out 2 games to help serve as deterrent to others.

Regarding the player's apology: I am tired of apologies where the person says that whatever they did wrong was out of character or doesn't reflect their values or who they are as a person. All of the things we do are a reflection of our character and our values.

Don't tell me that you are a good person. Be a good person. Don't tell me about your values. Live them. If you screw up, apologize without making excuses and demonstrate your sincerity by changing your behavior.

Regarding Coach Underwood's comments: Now we know why the Illini struggled the first couple of years under Coach Underwood. Coach Underwood is not very good at film study. A moment of emotion?

No. There was nothing about the previous play that was emotional. The Purdue player had scored on a layup and due to contact on the play he had fallen to the floor. He was just laying on the ground. The Illinois player is stepping away, pauses, and then deliberately changes the path of his foot to step on the chest of the Purdue player.

I would have understood a 1 game suspension. Honestly, if the KU-KSU stuff didn't go down I bet it would have just been a 1 game suspension but the Big Ten is showing they don't want even a whiff of that kind of crap going on. 2 games is fair.

Also huge LOL at Underwood complaining that "he already missed most of the game he did it in" and that they shouldn't suspend a player in the middle of conference season or based on schedule. What a loser.

For the people saying 1 or 2 games is fine, do you also know that he hit the guy below the belt first before he intentionally stepped/stomped on him? This wasn't an accident, it was a player losing mental control in a situation that honestly didn't look like the offensive player did anything wrong. This is the kind of thing that could have started a fight if any of the Purdue team had seen it happen.

Especially on the heels of the brawl at KU, this seems appropriate. You can't argue that he didn't go out of his way to step on the guy's chest.

Actions speak louder than words. If you blatantly assault another player, I don't want to hear how it is out of character for you to do so. You did it.

If he was a Hawkeye Player....the punishment is too big.

If he is on any other team.....kick him out for the year.

This was a pattern of behavior with this kid. League probably heard about it from other coaches.

The KU player repeatedly kicking the kid when he was down also got 2 games but this is the B1G. Standards should be a little higher.

Have they create a policy about player ejection so players and COACHES know what the consequences will be for flagrant actions.

I thought the guy who authored his apology was a very good fiction writer. Impressed that they found someone that bright in Champaign.

As a hawkeye fan I would have 0 problem with ANY of our guys facing a 2 game suspension for stomping on a player. I haven’t seen the video but am assuming it was clearly intentional based on the verbiage used to describe the incident.

I was going to say that 2 games seems about right until I remembered that we had a chronic eye poker that never got suspended. So there's that... Of course you had a guy named Grayson Allen that tripped several people and his own school suspended him for a game. There's really no right or wrong answer here..

I think the bigger story is the coach complaining about it. Way to teach your players accountability. Doing something stupid has consequences. Apparently that needs to be emphasized down in Champagne.

I agree. One game or four game is the question. The problem here is the coach is the one that is questioning it instead of using it as a form of showing the young man his mistake.

Wisconsin players elbow guys in the ribs every time they fight through a screen. I’m glad Woody poked them in the eye. Wisconsin is the dirtiest program out there. F’m.

lol on the eye poke .

Can we retroactively suspend Laettner for two games, then vacate any Duke wins that occurred during what would have been his suspension for using an ineligible player?

I'll admit, there were a couple of times I thought Jaacks should have been suspended or at least ejected.

Underwood is not a role model for his
players. He personally should have made
a suspension of the guy for 4 games. He
is a big jerk who is afraid to discipline his
own team members.
