I think the good counselor @Jimmy McGill had a thread on this but I couldn't find it. Anyways, as he also said, there's a special on Netflix about this tornado and its impact. It is just plain insanity. I had never seen some of that footage and I certainly hadn't heard some of the survivor stories. Some folks got sucked into the funnel and could see the eye of the tornado. That is nuts. Another poor guy nearly died of soil and bark fungus that wrecked his body post the tornado trauma.

As Jimmy said, take a look at that show. It just shows what puny things we are as biological entities.

I'll check it out. Nearly chased that day but had vehicle issues

I was driving through there right after that, headed to Texas from Iowa. I got a bunch of footage... Should probably revisit that sometime it's probably crazy

Two years later almost to the day, Moore Oklahoma got hit with a very similarly powered tornado. Not nearly as deadly though thankfully.

I'm always fascinated by the stories from Tornados. The straw going through a tree has to be tops
My dad's farm got hit by a tornado when he was a boy in the 50's. He said they had a door into their parlor with a large window in it. A 55 gallon barrel was projected through the bottom part of the door. The glass didn't break. He said any wall left standing had straw sticking out of it.

I was at basic training at the time, like week 3 or so, and both our flight and brother flight had a couple of guys from that area. I’ll never forget how all of a sudden our instructors were talking to us super nice and telling everybody to hang out in the day room while the guys called home to talk to family and check in on if they all survived, etc. Csb.

I experienced the Iowa City ef2. It sounded like a spooling jet engine.
One of my buddies was peeling and deveining shrimp at Joesph’s, they all heard the noise and he and a bunch of higher ups from the athletic department huddled up together.
CSB.

It went by my old house when it got started. The one thing that sticks out was the stillness before it and the greenish sky. I used to live near riverside drive and the dq there took a direct hit. There were ice cream wrappers about a mile away near greenwood where I used to live. Myrtle park also lost big trees but honestly downtown on took the brunt. Oddly, there were no deaths in Johnson County, given the damage but one woman in a mobile home lost her life in Muscatine due to that tornado.

I remember being in shock later that night going around the damage downtown…I can’t even comprehend a tornado like Joplin going through a city.

Edit:
This photo is an image of the damage that is seared in my memory, going by st pats and just seeing the wood impaled in the building next door illuminated by the flashing lights.

That storm is what got me into storm chasing. I remember seeing those two by fours.

I was just around the corner from that in the Ralston Creek apartments. (a few complexes south from the intersection of Burlington and Gilbert)

Huddled in a hallway, thought I might bite it. Remember power going out and the all the doors sucking shut. Of course as soon as it seemed halfway safe stuck my head outside and then ambled around the city for a good chunk of the night.

I saw that too. It was surreal.

I had trouble getting into it early on. Feels like fluff with probably 5 minutes of actual footage

Finally watched earlier this week. That dude has had a rough go.
Well, he still managed to get married and have 4 kids so he seems to be doing alright in some aspects. I thought for sure he was paralyzed when I was watching him give the interviews. I don't know what other long term issues he has because of his injuries though.

The Iowa City one was narrow and bounced around a lot. Thankfully it mostly didn't touch down in the downtown area. I think there was someone on the message boards at that time who said they literally ran away from it near College Green Park.

It was the nightmare scenario for an Iowa City tornado, warm April night (the day before Good Friday), early evening and kids swarming the downtown. Very lucky and I don't think there were even any injuries out of it.

I'll sit this one out. I've seen plenty of YT videos on the Joplin tornado among several other of the worst storms over the recent decades.

He had a pretty horrible upbringing too. He seems happy though. The kid is resilient, that is for damn sure.
