These teams actually played some D and were some of Frans best years. This was the year they went to the NIT championship. My point is the 2012-13 team went 500 in conference didn’t make the tournament. The current team is hovering around 500 in conference play and would get waxed by that 12-13 squad! Look at the fanbase energy during that NIT run. That bought Fran 12 more years!

Those squads with Woody, Whitey, Clemons, Gessel, Marble were probably better than their talent.

This year's squad ought to be better than it is---the lineups being played don't optimize the overall Defense + offense.

There aren't any truly terrible teams in B1G which makes the path to more difficult to get to 10-10 this year. We could be the best of the Bottom feeders if we get our act together. At this moment, there are 10 teams with 0.500 or better with the USC team that whooped us at 4-4. There are 8 teams with losing records in conference like Iowa. If Iowa can win on road vs OSU it would be big win considering where we are at right now.

Fran's high water mark was this stretch:

  • '18-19: 10-10 in conference, soundly beat 7 Cincinnati before losing in OT to 2 Tennessee. Not our best team overall but actually the one that's come closest to a Sweet 16 in the end.
  • '19-20: 11-9 in conference. Finished #25 in both polls. Tournament cancelled by the pandemic. Think this team did have Sweet 16 potential, had the tournament been held.
  • '20-21: 14-6 in conference. Ranked in the top 10 most of the year. Easily our best team but sadly couldn't hang with 7 Oregon (still think it was a bullshit draw though, having to play the PAC-12 champs (PAC-12 ended up dominating in the tournament) on a bye after VCU's Covid cancellation; meanwhile the OSU team we were better than undeservedly took our spot on the opposite 2-line with a much easier draw, which they still messed up).
  • '21-22: 12-8 in conference. Big Ten Tournament champs. Played like ass in the first round and lost to an unremarkable Richmond squad (we would've lost to any team in the field playing the way we did that game).

Both '12-13 and this year's team are a cut below those teams, and probably pretty equal to each other. Don't really see a point in comparing the two.

That team had Marble, Basabe, and White...

I'm not seeing the resemblance, sorry.

I've always thought if that team had snuck into the NCAA tournament, they could have gone a bit farther than expected, depending on matchups, of course.

Winning at Virginia, snapping their home win streak and a #1 seed the next year. Baylor should have been in, of course - a major **** up by the selection committee that year. I think part of our problem was our recent history at the time of not being anywhere close to the tournament, so not being included on any projections early on.

I'd take that along with a win at Rutgers.

That was the year we got screwed by the refs playing MSU, right? Izzo raped us.

Lost some tough games. So pissed Minnesota and Illinois got in ncaa tournament over them. Couple OT losses hurt and Nebraska.
