2017-18 lineup?

What's the consensus on the starters?

125: If Lee redshirts then does Laux move back down?
133: Laux, Rathbun, Wagner?
141: Turk or Happel?
149: Sorensen
157: Kemerer
165: Marinelli
174: Young
184: Does Wilcke move down?
197: Wilcke or does (can) Holloway move down if Wilcke does 184?
HWT: Stoll

Really that's not a terrible lineup if Lee foregoes the RS.

Lee would likely be top 4
Turk or Happel could potentially develop into R12. Remember that Turk beat Seth Gross last year.
Sorensen and Kemerer are likely 2nd.
Marinelli and Young could be top 10.
Wilcke could be tough down a weight. We saw how tough it was for Ganbrall when he made that jump
The same could be said for Holloway at 197 where he isn't giving up 40 lbs every match.
Stoll would have a good shot at top 5 HWT. That weight clears out a bit with Medbery, Coon, Walz and Kroells gone.

If Lee goes I think it's pretty safe for 5 AAs (Lee, Sorensen, Kemerer, Marinelli and Stoll) with good potential for Turk/Hapel, Young, Wilcke and Holloway.

How many years of eligibility are you giving Sorensen? (Oops, thought he was wrestling his final year.)

That will be a really solid dual team with holes at 125 and 197. Could easily get 5/6 AAs and a couple finalist out of that group. Penn State and Ohio State will be stronger, but I think we could compete with anyone else. Our best options at 125 and 197 will be shirting.

What are the odds of Iowa landing Gable Stevenson in the 2018 class? That would be the logical target as it would align with Stoll's departure.

Seems that he's good friends with Roman Bravo-Young so that might give PSU an advantage.

Nevills brother is also in that class and a top 10 p4p guy. Is that an option or do they really think Costello is the future successor at 285?

psu guys say the other Nevills brother might play football.
Our guys on here have been saying there might be some mutual interest with Colton Shultz from colorado. He'd be huge get

Coon will still be back next year at Hwt, he's redshirting this year due to injury.

If I had to guess I'd say Sasso and Schultz make the most sense as top targets.

We'd have a great spread of top 10 recruits across multiple classes, so they won't all depart in one year. Plus throw in other ranked recruits, not in the top 10, which TnT have proven to be able to develop into AA's. Guys like Meyer/Brooks/Murin/Young/Happel. They make for outstanding supporting cast to our champs/finalists in the lineup.

2015
Kemerer

2016
Marinelli

2017
Lee
Warner

2018
Teasdale
Sasso

2019
Schultz

Why no mention of a kid named Brands??

Why no mention of a kid named Brands??
I was strictly talking top 10s. I think Nelson is going to be very good, and surprise a lot of people who haven't been following his progression. When i first watched him as an 8th/9th grader, he was very raw, but the effort was obvious. Comparing him now to then is like two completely different people. He's a beast. Looking like he'll be a 3x IA champ after not even qualifying his FR year. I think soon he'll have to be ranked in the top 100 of his recruiting class. Very high ceiling, and his mindset is all about dominating his opponents. He will only get better being surrounded by Lee, Teasdale, Murin, Happel, Kemerer, Marinelli and hopefully Sasso all in the lower to mid weights. He will be a very good asset for Iowa if he chooses to come! He's looking like a 157, what are your thoughts?

He's not even close to top 10 p4p. He's not even top 10 at his weight (currently 19th per FLO).

There are a lot of Iowa guys that are better recruits at this point than Brands. Teske, Thomsen and Costello are what I would consider the better Iowa prospects at the moment.

Brands is in the next tier with guys like Bennett, Biscoglia, Lyon and Wriedt.

And Brands recently beat him 12-7. He just beat cheeshead champ and #2 ranked Yant 12-6. He's separating himself from in-state competition.

Did you watch the match or just see the score?

Brands hit 3 TDs late in the match to win including one right at the final whistle.

Lara will learn from that as he likely gassed himself with a really fast start.

I would expect a battle at State.

So, Brands had a small lead and then widened it in the third?

Lara appeared to run out of gas. He came out with a flurry and scored first. For 5 minutes it was a neck and neck match.

I think it's premature to write this off as a foregone conclusion. Brands certainly is the favorite but I wouldn't be shocked to see Lara knock him off. He's demonstrated the ability to take Brands down.

While most everyone seems to agree with this pov, I hope we are putting a full court press on Gable Steveson.

Berge always seemed to be leaning towards Iowa, Suriano was too, and it looked like Penn State had the inside track on Spencer Lee. A lot of what we think we know as fans, often we don't, so I am hoping we might be wrong here too. If there is room to still work on Gable, we need to be getting busy, he's an amazing talent.

Jack Wagner wasent even varsity his freshmen year then he ran off 3 state titles. The varsity guy he was behind did win the state title that year.

My bad... I thought you talking all incoming recruits.

I think Nelson is an absolute stud who is getting better everyday and is nowhere near his ceiling... Very exciting to watch and continue to watch his progression.

I don't believe he has verbally committed yet. I am assuming he is a silent commit. Any chance at all that he doesn't come to Iowa?

Agree, as far as being a prospect I like Brands as much or more than anyone in the state. He has really gotten better in short order and I expect that to continue. He might not be in the top tier right now but really high ceiling.

Well I suppose there is always a chance. Maybe he decides he doesn't want to wrestle in college, maybe he decides he doesn't want the D1 college wrestling experience and goes to a place like Wartburg, maybe he just wants to go somewhere that he is on his own, maybe he goes to PSU because he loves dodgeball. sure I suppose he could go somewhere else but if he wants to wrestle at a d1 school not real sure how he'd go somewhere else.

I mean does the coach come to their house to make a recruiting pitch if he looks at another school? Does Terry go along on the college visit? Does he get up and wink at TnT if he goes to another school and beats the Iowa guy? It was one thing for Perry to wrestle against his uncle but could you imagine what it'd be like if JoJo Smith had come to Iowa and wrestled against OSU over the weekend.

Sure... If I've learned anything with my big mouth, it's that no recruit is ever a sure thing until he's on campus.;)

Don't know Nelson at all. From what I've seen, he wrestles a fair amount like his father - which is awesome. Does he also have his father's fire and temperament?

Can't say I personally know him either, so can't speak much on that, but Nelson seems like a pretty cool customer. I'd say he's got plenty of fire and determination though. I've also heard second hand that his work ethic is through the roof, but that's probably obvious.

A while back it was discussed that maybe Teasdale was backing out on his verbal he is a close friend of Gable S. also. Hope not true cause if Penn State gets them 2 with what they already have piled up with gray shirts etc no way in hell anyone gonna take them down.

Nelson is a absolute BEAST on the mat and continues to get better. Off the mat he is pretty mild mannered(atleast from what I have seen) He is VERY humble from what I have seen.

Here's 2 "under the radar" type guys that I know are being looked at also.

Joe Kelly he just pinned #2 Issac Judge in the 1st period and its not like he caught him, he took him down off of Issac's shot and then just bull rushed a arm bar over for the fall. Then he just walked through the Solon tourney pinning #5 in the finals.
Bryce Esmoil is #1 at 195 he is tearing people apart. He lost a couple in his 1st tournament and is tearing people up. Strong as a ox and he knows what he is going to do 3 moves ahead of time. He just amazes me with what he does. Both are multi-sport athletes so the ceilings on both are pretty high...

Dude you have to be from WL. Maybe I'll meet you sometime when I'm in town visiting relatives. As current 2017 selves where does Nelson rank p4p for people with last name Brands? Can T or T still handle his youth?

Getting on campus isn't a lock either. Does Baldosaro mean anything to you. And then whatshisname from Ohio that left and surfaced at some lower level school. Any others I'm missing?

You from FD? I'm not saying Lara doesn't have a chance, but you're defending him pretty hard.

I could see Nelson as the heavy favorite at this point. You said it yourself Nelson scored three straight TDs vs Lara when he needed to and in their last meeting he won by a good margin.

Let's throw Carew out there. Gets to campus. Multiple injuries and never sees the mat.
Could throw in Nate Moore. Serious infection. Never the same and fizzles early in his career (might be more to his journey to that, but seems like the bad staph infection ended it for him).

What kind of odds do you think you could have got betting neither Moore would AA in college. I'd guess somewhere around 500/1. Two of Iowa hs best in the last few decades.

Then since we've expanded our rules here............

Let's add Jake ballweg and Broc Berge.

All these kids you speak of did make it to campus, heck even Bradley, Gross, and Paddock did. Things just didn't work out. Think Gobblin was more talking about how no recruit is a guarantee until the NLI is signed and there on campus. Staying a meeting there potential is something completely different. For whatever reason some kids just don't work out, but no recruit is a lock to attend a university until the NLI is signed and even then things can happen.

I'm not from FD but I do like their team and have seen them live a couple times this year.

I'm not sure that I'm defending him so much as it is giving an objective account of what I saw.

The first match was a tight 9-7 score.

The second was tight until about a minute to go. Lara looked gassed and gave up some easy TDs in the last minute with one right at the buzzer.

Maybe that's a sign of things to come. Maybe Lara won't be able to keep Brands' pace. I think it was a poor game plan for Lara in the second match. He came out way to fast and wore himself out. My prediction is that Brands wins it, I just think it will be tightly contested.

I previously predicted that FD will win the tournament which is a fairly bold prediction given their current third position.

I think T. Lara, Bennett and Teske win their weights with a fair amount of bonus along the way. I think C. Lara finishes top 3. I think Ayala finishes top 4. Their 126, Lockner, is looking tough and I think he has a great shot at top 6.

The biggest knock on FD was their lack of depth in the bigger weights compared to SEP and Valley. I'm not sure it's a serious problem. Since my initial prediction, Donarth, worked his way into the rankings (#9 at 182). Triston Licht, 195, also returned to the lineup from injury and won the CR J-Hawk tournament last weekend. His weight class wasn't stacked but he did beat #9 Serrano by a 10-5 score. I would guess he'll crack the top 10 in the next update.

Many scoffed at that thread prediction saying FD only has 6 ranked wrestlers while Valley has 11. Since then, FD has gone to 7, not counting Licht who should be added soon, and Valley has dropped to 9 ranked wrestlers.

Yes I am from West Liberty graduated in 1992. I am related to Bryce and Will so I am a bit bias there. Joe Kelly has REALLY impressed me this year!! This summer at camp Jaybo was working with Bryce and McDonough was working with Joe and I can tell you they both have improved a lot because of just 1 day with those guys. I think they both would excel in the Iowa room. Only problem is what is coming in. Joe looks like a 157 type guy and there Nelson/TheBull/Kemdawg in that range. Bryce would be 197 with Warner coming it will be VERY hard for Bryce to beat him out. If Bryce could make 184 I think he would slide in right after Wilcke is gone...
