2017 class is now...

Looks like $ for Berge, Warner and Murin just opened up a bit. Hopefully the decommits from Mejia and Rent are because Iowa has silent commits from the others and there just wasn't enough $ for everybody. This is probably a very good sign that good news is coming at more at need weights.

I hope it's because there's good news coming, because to be honest this isn't money opening up. There was no money committed to both Renteria and Mejia.

Actually, this could absolutely be about $$ as our guys have made them an offer which they evidently didn't like. So, our guys can be targeting Warner and Berge and have gotten one or both, keeping money set aside for them, or both boys just decided the hell with it. As of a few weeks ago, at least one of them was solidly in Iowa's camp which means they got an offer they didn't like.

I'm just saying there's not "new" money opened up. Nothing was committed to the two to begin with.

Well after July first I thought you could discuss money but I could be wrong and most likely Hawks couldn't offer these 2 enough and go for Warner n Berge just my guess.

Agreed. I think it was wishful thinking for us all to think we could get Lee, Mejia, Renteria, Stickley, Troy, Warner, Berge, and Murin.. All in one recruiting class, lol. Awesome if a bunch of guys could afford to come on low Sholly money but thats not how the real world works. Would still be a damn good class if 5 or even all 6 of the names on that list minus Mejia/Renteria.

"What weightclass will you be at this summer and next season.

Max Murin: I am wrestling at 58 kilos (127 lbs.) for the trials and I am thinking I will compete at 138 next season. For college I am looking at 141/149.

Do you have a list of colleges you are looking at right now?

Max Murin: Right now I am taking a lot of unofficials. I am just starting to narrow the colleges down. The University of Iowa is one of my top choices right now. "

I don't think it is unrealistic to think these decommits just gave us a good chance at getting Murin, Berge, and Warner. I have to scratch my head at whoever said no money just opened up. I think we only had a realistic shot at 1 of either Murin, Berge, and Warner prior to tonight.

Let's not forget we also have Wagner who is a very good light weight. Couple others I haven't seen mentioned are Real Woodds, Sammy Sasso, and is anyone jumping back on the Alex Thomsen banwagon?

Don't forget about Lion

Thomsen said his favorite team was PSU not so long ago. He's not coming to Iowa IMO even if Cael says no thanks.

What seems to be lost in all this fun recruit projecting is Nelson Brands. I sure as heck wouldn't want to be the highly rated kid who is in the same weight as Nelson in a few years because he wont cost this staff a dime and I don't know any kid in the country who improved as much as Nelson did from his Fr to Soph year. If he continues his current projection path into his Jr and SR years.... goodnight!

Do you have a link or remember where you saw Thomsen saying that? I had not seen that so I am curious.

Shame that Thomsen doesn't have significant interest in Iowa, if true. His style and athletic abilities seem to scream Iowa and seems like he would thrive in the Iowa room. Never met him and have only seen him wrestle on video/TV, but I wonder why there isn't more interest in Iowa?

I don't, I just remember it was odd that someone did an interview or something and asked him who his favorite wrestler was and and he said I like to watch Penn St. Not an individual but named a team.

IMO if you grow up in this state either you are a Hawkeye or your not. Its not a team that all of a sudden you start liking when your 17. Like Iowa was in Spencer Lee's DNA growing up loving Iowa wrestling.

Just guessing if Cael doesn't want him then Nebraska would be the next player due to location, then the usual suspects like Mizzou, UNI, ISU or Minny. Maybe Perry gives him a call. Who knows. All I know is the Hawkeye should already be in place and it doesn't appear its in the DNA.

Last year on this board you wouldn't find a bigger Alex Thomsen fan than me. I've never seen a kid that explosive with that much offense. He has regressed significantly. He has three losses in the last month to kids that he shouldn't be close with. His big problem is he has zero work out partners. He wrestles for swift and literally no one to work out with. There are two others from his hs team who go to Mwc club and there are tons of work out partners. Namely one who beat the kid he lost to at northern plains. I hope he seeks kids to work out with and gets his grove back at Fargo. As of now it doesn't look like hell medal there.

Just curious - do University employees' (or coaches in particular) kids have reduced or free tuition? I'm sure that even if Nelson had to pay tuition, Terry would have no problem paying out of pocket instead of using up scholarship money.

In Omaha creighton and uno are large schools both being d1. At creighton your tuition is free. At uno it's largely discounted. That's if your parent works there.

I don't believe there is anything like that for run-of-the-mill employees of the U of I. But my kids are young and I haven't started looking that closely at this kind of thing. Might be different for coaches, but I would doubt it.

I know that employee's kids at Coe College get free tuition to Coe and several other reciprocating colleges.

Yeah, the University employees way to many people to offer free tuition for all family members. I could see professors, coaches, and administrators getting some sort of discount though. I have no idea of the actual policy.

There is no assistance program for state university employees' children in Iowa. Many of the private schools in the state give employee's children free tuition as well as shared free tuition programs with other private schools they have agreements with. State schools can't do that as there are thousands of people that work for the universities and the schools would filled with free tuition university employee's children.

It's time to bump up Terry's salary so he can pay for Nelson's college and not have to use any 9.9 scollys

Im guessing our recent decomits were a result of not enough money being offered once money could be discussed. This is a concern of mine for when Teasdales time comes with penn state so close to home.

In recent years we have had kids we all followed closely because of their talent and fondness of Iowa but money changed their interest. This will probably always be a concern but has me not counting on the Teasdale to Iowa plan as some are. I just feel if money cannot be discussed at this time then no comittment can be truely secure. Its possible I do not have the correct understanding of any of this also.

Couldn't talk money with Lee until 1 July, either. Teasdale is going to get a boatload of $$$. He's truly elite.

His buddy Spencer will already be here. That should help with concerns about a few bucks, unless they are positioning the scholarships to give Teasdale a full ride and if that's the case, money isn't a factor.

The reality is all of these kids aren't going to get full rides to wrestle at these powerhouse schools. You need workout partners and depth too. Everybody wants something. Can't blame them, but 9.9 scholarships doesn't allow for everyone to have a large chunk of the scholarship pie. If money is your main concern to wrestle in college, there are plenty of places you can get it, you just won't be involved in Team Championship runs and things of that nature. It's a bitch from both sides of the equation, unless you're Spencer Lee or Mark Hall, no doubt about it.

The issue for the school is, all these full ride types don't work out, so you better not miss when you give them. Iowa has surely missed on some kids that most likely got a good chunk of the scholarship pie, and that hinders you big time trying to regroup. Like everything else, choose wisely.
