I'm as big a Hawk/KF backer as there is, but it wasn't one of the best seasons ever. The team actually did better than I thought they would given the schedule and lack of returning playmakers in the passing game. There have been 5 Top 10 finishes under KF alone, all of those seasons were better than this one. But let's not make it into something that it wasn't.

After listing the things the OP listed and still finishing 8-5, I’d say it was a border line bad season.

I think good is the best description. The great pluses mentioned about the year - AW, 2 consensus AA, Nebby, OSU, and ISU.

The inability of the O to be consistent, the failure to find ways to get the ball to AW in space and our TE's more often, and the puzzling losses to NW and Purdue at home all drag down what could have been a a very good to great year.

Iowa won yesterday with a grand total of 200 yards of offense. That has to change next year - yesterday was pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

10+ = great
9 = very good
8 = good
7 = meh

Anything lower than 7 with Iowa's FB spend per year = nope

There were some great moments and individual accolades/performances no doubt. I'll remember this season fondly. But if we're gonna call this one of the best, the fan base has gone soft on expectations.

Rather, a team that flashed its potential, but didn't put it all together. Very inconsistent offensively. I would argue it's one of the most disappointing teams due to this fact.

It was a hard schedule and young team so I am not sitting here bashing them just STRONGLY disagree this is one of the best teams in Iowa history. Nonetheless, it is about what we expected this year and a good building block for next year.

Going to miss the Hell out of those 3. Josey Jewell might be my personal favorite Hawk of all time. Wadley grew up big time in this program and made a man of himself. Should be a great 3rd down back at the next level. Jackson has a very bright NFL future ahead and will/already has brought a lot of attention to the program. Big reason we got the Indy guys in this class. Phil is starting to build a consistent stable of elite level DB's. Future is bright, especially when you throw in the DL outlook, which is what this program truly hangs its hat on. Need to add to the back end of the front 7 to support them.

Is this a season for the ages? Not even close. But if you told me in August Iowa would win 8 games (including a bowl victory), I would have taken that in a heartbeat. There have certainly been satisfying moments, but we can't help but wonder 'what could have been' a couple of times had Iowa held on against PSU.

There's plenty to work on next season, and plenty of positive momentum. I think Iowa still has too many gaping holes to expect a huge season, but I think 9 wins (may take a bowl victory) is doable.
