2019 Owen Coburn of Spirit Lake commits to SDSU

I have yet to watch him play but have been told he was better than Kreiner at the same age comparison!

Hard to say. He got handled pretty well by Jackson Wright of Sergeant Bluff, who is Maybe 6'5". But Wright, at 275, could move him around and keep him from catching the ball where he wanted to. Outside of that game, he shot 70% from the field and averaged 18 points per game as a high school sophomore.

Owen is a nice player. Different skill set then Kriener. Coburn was 6'8" as an 8th grader Kriener was 5'11". Kriener will remind people of a stronger Matt Bullard before his career is over. Our team needs outside threats and Kriener may prove to be one of the better ones the next few years. Cook and Pemsl along with Garza will dominate the block. Kriener's skill set is different and will be of great value over the next 3 to 4 years.

We had so many conflicting reports about Kriener, and I'm sure many of those who spoke up are still around. So what I'd like to ask is if the same people give reports on Coburn, please identify if you were on the Kriener good, or Kriener bad, side of the reports.

Well.... I for one was not necessarily thinking Kreiner was the answer. Not like I'm cheering against him but didn't think he would be our super hero!!! I have been told Owen is better than Kreiner at the same age. Fwiw..... I have answered at least and not taken a back seat!!

I'll say it again. Kriener grew very late in his HS career. Coburn grew very early. Kriener has much better outside shot. I guess it depends on what your looking for. Kriener is a better athlete and Coburn was more mature physically as a Sophmore.

Watched Kriener for two years and thought it might be reach for him to go to Iowa but I was wrong, Coburn is an inside player with lots of great inside moves. He has to put on pounds but rumor is he is still growing and he is very athletic for his size. Kriener improved from junior to senior year and was always a good outside shooter although he was the only big man Spirit Lake had so did not show it much in high school. Kriener is a forward who played center in high school. Coburn is a true center and is very good and should get better

I watched both players play multiple games for Spirit Lake and will say I was somewhat surprised that Owen didn't wait for a bigger offer. I do think he is further along than Kriener at the same age but Owen has to get more explosive and stronger.....which he will. Last year he had numerous opportunities to dunk the ball and didn't do to lack of explosion. You do not see to many sophomore bigs however that have the footwork and ball skills that Owen has. I am anxious to see him continue to grow these next two years.

Its smart for an athlete to commit to a school early in the event of an injury, most schools would still honor the scholarship. If bigger/better schools come along, nothing says he can't change his mind but he is still covered along the way. Or he might just be really comfortable with SDSU and that environment which isn't too far from home? I suspect its a little of both...
