I know Iowa offered him last year, he's pretty much blowing up and will be on all the Blue Bloods lists...I'm guessing there's a link to Jok with being from South Sudan?

Last year after freshman season he was 6'11" and had a 7'9" wingspan, he's now 7'2" and reported 7'11" wingspan. Hear he may reclassify for 2018 class???

Iowa likely no shot if that happens, and probably not 2019 either.

Nice interview in link

Just read the comments in this article about Chol Marial and it's like LOL OMG!
"Marial can handle the ball, and has a wingspan longer THAN ANYONE CURRENTLY IN THE NBA. He's the real deal"
""He'll eventually be a STRETCH FOUR when he gets to the college level," said Kehoe [his coach]."
Marial is 7'2".

I remember posting his highlights last year and getting stunned comments. His best competing offer with Iowa is STILL FSU as far as I know. Imagine this guy as a stretch 4 next to Garza in 2019. But think our only hope is any South Sudan connection he might have with the Joks. Isn't Peter's brother a military officer there?

Dau Jok is currently working and in the US National Guard I believe.
Thanks. Peter's and Dau's father was a well-known general in the South Sudan army who was killed. Dau trained with the US military hoping that might help him make a difference back in Sudan someday but hoped for peaceful means.

But to get back to the original point, this would certainly make the Joks known to someone like the South Sudanese Chol Marial. Not sure about how it affects recruiting. But Fran seems to like some Iowa connection in his offers, so perhaps it's been some kind of factor.

Time to place this under super secret security and hire trained mercenaries to fend off all other potential college recruiters who get any kind of whiff of this kid's existence.

I looked it up and he is in the army reserves. He must have gone through OCS after school.

I don't know about his shooting or ball handling, but when you have almost an 8' wingspan, you can be a game changer.

Iowa, UNC, WV, Georgetown, FSU and St. Johns is his offer list (per rivals)

What is exciting about this as an Iowa fan?

At least being in the mix is exciting. No chance landing him at this point it appears.

Keep wondering if only Peter Jok was 2 years younger. Maybe his family and country could have given Iowa better chances with Sudanese Chol Marial, as well as Jok's relation to Bol Bol.

He will be a good replacement after Cook leaves early for the NBA.

Not sure how you can say we're in the mix if you think we have no chance...

If he visits, I'll be interested. If he commits, then I'll be excited. Until that stuff happens - there's really nothing to see here.

For the record - I feel good about the recruits coming in. I just don't get excited about offers.. It's commitments I care about. Fran can offer all the blue chip prospects he wants, but it doesn't mean they're coming here.

It's a bit more deep than that. Fran doesn't just throw offers out to all the top players. There is mutual interest before Iowa is going to extend and offer. To me THAT'S exciting compared to the previous never to be named coach that ran Iowa basketball into the ground.

I think he means:

1. we are CURRENTLY "in the mix" - that appears to be more of a fact
however......
2. PROJECTING ahead and assuming more blue bloods will make offers, means are chances significantly dwindle ("no chance" is obviously extreme)

We are normally not even considered for blue blood type players. It was fun to be in the mix for Ulis, but man did that sting to lose out at the very end to UK.
