I dont pay for premium so I don't know all the low-down but it looks like Fran's staff is investing a lot of time in 4* guards in the 2020 class. Guys like Ty Berry and Bryce Thompson who both have interest from Kansas.

Gut instinct, reason, and history tells me Fran has a 0.0% chance of landing these guys. Should Fran stop spending time recruiting big fish and focus on second-tier fish like Chanse Robinson? I think Fran's biggest flaw has been whiffing late on big recruits then settling on the Maishe Dailey's and Dom Uhl's of the world.

you're admittedly uninformed and then decide to post and give your gut instinct and say we have zero chance.

Going forward, you should try the opposite like Costanza. You should completely ignore every urge towards common sense and good judgement you've ever had. Embrace it like your religion and acknowledge your devotion to the anti-christ.

Then you would be mad at Fran for never going after the big fish.

Easy there keyboard warrior. 0% was obviously hyperbole but I am referring to the Tyler Ulis/Charlie Moore/DJ Cartons years. We want to put work in with these guys but we keep coming up short. At what point does it become unproductive?

haven't you heard the phrase break the rock around these parts? Fran missed out on Carton and didn't just mail it in, they moved on to plan B which seems like a nice pick up in Toussaint. Fran has reeled in a top 100 player in each of the last three recruiting classes, I would think you'd want him to keep plugging away and try to extend the streak. Just because Fran missed on Ulis, Moore and Carton doesn't mean you simply give up on top talent, especially if the top talent is receptive to your recruiting pitch and genuinely interested in Iowa. Remember FranCon, think opposite before you post.

He isn't wrong in any way, shape, or form. As an uninformed guy, your words, he is 100% spot on and provided more info than you.

That being said, we should still go after the big fish, but move on when it doesn't pan out, which is not something Fran has done. JT is the anomaly.

Fran's in on a half dozen point guards for 2020 THAT WE KNOW OF. He's in on 3,4 and 5 stars. I don't know what else you would have him do.

Recruit top PGs and don't get them: we should have gone for guys we could get.

Recruit 3* PGs that are lightly recruited: this is why we can't compete for championships.

There's no winning unless he probably signs a top 5 PG every other year.

Normally, at least of last several years, I would say skim off the top of the cream, and start with what is next... But not this year.

This year I say swing for the fences! We have some really good talent coming back, some good players coming in and several big openings coming up. That and we are coming off a good season that ended in the round of 32. Along with a preseason ranking in every early poll.

That's a lot going for the Hawks. Fran should bring in two highly ranked players in this class. I am betting on it... Any takers ?? I feel confident our coach will get it done!

Given that very few schools sign a top 5 pg any given year, aren't you asking for the impossible? Way to hedge your bets...

I guess I didn't make my point very well. I was trying to say test the waters with the 5* guys but don't waste so much time with them.I feel like the football team runs with the better mantra. They offer plenty of big names, but they start focusing on second and third tier guys right off the bat and carefully pick the ones they want.

Not trying to crap on Fran, just asking a legitimate question about whether the recruiting method has worked.

Its a legitimate question. At some point in the process, the prospect communicates interest - or not. I suspect that major college coaches are pretty good at discerning the level of genuine interest and adjust accordingly. A campus visit is a big step in the development of a relationship. Official visits, obviously, are very key and those recruits should be pursued to the end so long as a scholarship is still available.

Of course there is winning. Fran's job is to recruit good players. Either land the big fish or look under some rocks and find the 3-star that is better than their rating.

Obviously we all want him to land the best players, ideally elite talents. My comment was addressing the posters that complain both that Fran is going after guys he "can't land" and then also lands guys that are under recruited.

The only winning to those posters is to have a coach and program that can land a top flight guard/player with no worry. We all want that but it's not realistic.

You are right. And when McC does identify under-the-radar talent, they sometime blow up only to be snatched away by a blue blood later. That has happened numerous times. I still think this staff can identify and recruit talented players, they just need a little more luck.

His point was really to make sure we at least land some high 3 star guy/guys, we all love to shoot for the 4 star guys, but given Fran's abysmal track record with guards, it is more than a fair point.

I am really hoping that Toussaint is one of the gems that the staff has found. Looking forward to having a quick guard who has a rep as a good defender on the team.
.

I do not think that his being elevated to a 4-star player at the last minute is an coincidence. Especially that late in the game... The scouts saw what 20+ other schools that offered Joe T a scholarship saw, a Very solid higher level D1 player, not getting the respect he deserved.

High school players simply do not get rated higher after their end of AAU basketball. IT is rare, especially for guards... That does not happen unless players really bring it hard just before their senior HS seasons. But apparently Mr Toussaint did just that.

Is Joe T a gem, or will he become a gem?? Maybe. Definitely hope so! However, he will not be a diamond in the rough. He is a known gem... Looking forward to seeing Joe T!

Go Hawks!

I love JoeT's tapes, and I also believe Fran could have landed a really good one. The 2020 class could really set Iowa up for a bright future if Fran can get one of his top PG targets...

Of course, Fran should go after some highly recruited players every year. You just need to keep looking for lesser recognized gems, maybe like JoeT, when it looks like the top guys have chosen to go to another school. I really hope the next assistant brings energy and some recruiting connections.

Early in his evaluation recruiting sites had him ranked as a Top 100 player. Around Jan. 2018 he plunged down to the 200s. Not sure why exactly, though if I had to take a shot in the dark I'd guess it was related to his size.

Seems like a highly skilled player. Quick and athletic. Lot of potential there. Can he develop a consistent outside shot? Can he get to the rim against B1G defenses? Can he defend 4/5 star guards? Can he be an effective facilitator within Fran's system? We'll see. But I'm excited about what Toussaint could bring to the table, and I hope we start going after more players like him.

It would be great if we could pair Joe with a bigger 2020 PG like Caleb Love.

Fran has been at this for all his life....if you think you could do better maybe you should apply for the assistant coaches job and recruit the 2 and 3 star recruits.

Was waiting for this type of response. You're attacking me as a person instead of the truth of the statement. Yes, I don't know much about recruiting and wouldnt be a good recruiter. Yes, Fran knows more about basketball than every person on here. I even think he's a pretty good coach. That doesn't mean all of his methods are perfect and immune from scrutiny

With Moore specifically, I don't think it was as much missed but rather "passed" on Charlie when the recruitment started to get a bit shady. Nope, I don't have proof, but there was a lot of smoke in that direction at the time.

Robinson is not in any way a "second-tier fish" IMO.
.
Hate to state facts but he kinda is. Tier 1 Players are top 50 Kids, Tier 2 is 51-150 kids, Tier 3 is 151-200. Robinson is ranked #170 so technically he is a Tier 3 player. Could he play better than his ranking? Sure but that does not change the fact of where he is currently ranked.

I don't know anything about the other recruits but I do know Carton and if the Iowa coach was God he wasn't coming to Iowa.

I love these arbitrary tiers you've manufactured out of thin air.

Definitely recruiting a lot of really good PGs for 2020. As long as Fran brings in one of his top choices, I don't care what he is ranked.
