I think the Hawkeyes will be ranked somewhere between 15 and 20 in most of the Pre-Season polls that come out.

I like to break the schedule down in 3 game stretches.

First 3 Games - South Dakota State, ISU, Nevada - Predicted Record: 3-0 - Ranking after 1st 3 Games: 12

South Dakota State - will be a tough opponent for sure but no reason the Hawks shouldn't win this game by 2 TDs - 31-17
Iowa State - they lose a lot and the game is in Kinnick so I expect to win by 10 plus - 27-16
Nevada - they lose their stud QB to the draft and have a new coach - Hawks win by 10 plus - 38-20

Next 3 Games: at RUT, MICH, at ILL - Predicted Record: 3-0, Overall Record: 6-0 - Ranking after 6 games: 5
At Rutgers - Road games in the Big 10 are never easy, but need to win this one handily - 31-13
Michigan - most likely will be a night game vs. a top 10 Michigan team - the atmosphere and crowd help gets a signature win - 24-23
At Illinois - might be a little ugly coming off a huge win but still get a W - 24-13

Next 3 Games: at OSU, NW, at PUR - Predicted Record: 1-2, Overall Record: 7-2 - Ranking after 9 games: 14
At OSU - tough game and environment vs. an uber talented team - 17-30
Northwestern - get an early lead and for once don't let off the gas vs NW - 38-17
at PUR - the struggle continues vs. Purdue - 23-27

Next 3 Games: WIS, at MINN, NEB - Predicted Record: 3-0, Overall Record: 10-2 - Ranking after 12 games: 10
WIS - get a huge home win over Bucky to secure the tie-breaker nod for the Big 10 West - 23-20
at MINN - they return some weapons but Floyd stays home - 34-24
NEB - the winning streak vs. continues - 31-17

Hawks finish 7-2 in the West and get back to the Big 10 Title game vs. OSU.

ill accept that season with zero complaints or bitching. i’ll not even ask for a qb change if the qb throws for 14 total yards and 8 INTs in the 2 losses, matter of fact i won’t complain even if the qb ends up in last place overall. just make the ccg.

If pu beats us, they won't lose 3 b1g games
Without major offensive change hard to see us beating wiscy. Hopefully ur right on both though!

I'll see your 8-4 and lower it to 7-5.......
Here's my question for you Evil. You are expecting a 7-5 season and your expecation is both justifiable and possible. Now IF the team manages to go 10-2, would you still find room in your heart to dump on the staff and/or qb? I'm asking only because your reaction to my earlier post in this thread indicates that you were displeased with it. :)

The standard Iowa fan predicts 7-5, the Hawks go 9-3, but then the fan screams "I'm not mad we are 9-3, I'm MaD At ThE WaY WE LoSt ThE GaMeS!!!"

If several FCS schools can compete with--and sometimes beat--the likes of Iowa, why can't the likes of Iowa (Big Ten, etc.) compete with--and sometimes beat--SEC schools (Alabama, Georgia, etc.)? Asking for a friend.
Can sometimes but hard when they have starters as second stringers up and down each side of the ball. Other than Bama and Georgia none of the rest of the SEC teams this past season were world beaters. I realize we lost to Kentucky but cmon it really was a meaningless bowl and Mr Goodson sat it out. He would have had a lot of yards in that one.

The Purdue game is going to be the key for the Iowa season. While Purdue lost Karlaftis and Bell, they return OConnell who will by far be the best QB in the west to begin the season. But the big deal for Purdue is that they play Maryland, Indiana and PSU in the crossover games, and PSU is at home. They play both Iowa and Wisky at home and their toughest road game will probably be Nebraska. Iowa has to win the head-to-head for sure.

Of course Iowa wants to win the head-to-head against Wisky too, but Wisky has a much tougher schedule. At OSU, at Iowa, at Michigan St., at Nebraska.

I think NW will suck, Nebraska is going to start beating some people, and Illinois is going to jump up and grab somebody too, but still a ways to go. Like last year, I think the west will be won at 7-2.

With Bama, Georgia, Clemson, and Ohio State, recruiting really matters. Texas A&M is joining that list and Oklahoma is probably up there too. With those teams their entire roster is made up of 4 and 5 star guys. This is where it shows up: do you all remember that guy in high school that had a full beard and looked like he was 25? That is the equivalent of a 4 and 5 star guy. Their grade that they receive isn't as much about their potential, where they will be in 4 years, but where they are right now. A team like Iowa can get a 2 or 3 star guy, develop him with their superior coaching, and in 3-4 years sometimes it works out that they end up All-Americans or high draft picks. That is great for the player, but not always great for a development team because so much of the time that talent is wasted.

How is it wasted? It is because there are 11 players on each side of the ball, and with the 2 deeps that is 44 players. Add in some specialists at different positions and more backup at the receiver and back positions, you can easily get over 50 real contributing players on a college roster. And most all of them will be needed over a 12, 13 or 14 game season. Now, when most recruiting classes are 20-22 players, and, you have some early entrants into the NFL draft, even without portal defections and injuries it is an absolute requirement to have contributing sophomores and freshmen. No way around it. I picked a depth chart from a game last year and here it was:

Offense including PK: 3 SR's, 11 JR's, 3 SO's, 6 F
Defense including P: 5 SR's, 7 JR's, 8 SO's, 3 F

The breakdown will be different from year to year, but I think that this one I outlined is pretty typical. It shows that if you make it as a SR that means you weren't good enough to go to the draft as a JR, you weren't passed over by an underclassmen, and you have evaded injuries and not transferred. It will probably always be the 3rd or 4th class in numbers. Also seeing that freshmen have a higher tendency to compete for an offensive position than a defensive position. Thus, 6 freshmen on offense and 3 on defense. The biggest classes in regards to numbers will probably always be the JR class then followed by the SO class. A younger team will probably flip flop that like this depth chart.

Bottomline, it just takes a lot longer to develop a 2 or 3 star guy, and thus the top teams are continually plugging holes with the 18 year old with the beard. Even in a rare year where a developmental team has a bunch of upperclassmen, their 1's may be able to reasonably line up with a top-tier team's 1's, but the 2's will fall off the map. And, specifically with the SEC teams, they are allowed to over-sign their classes and thus weed out the players they don't want before they have to commit to them, and also are not nearly as moral as Kirk is. If I was a parent of a top-tier recruit that would certainly matter to me, but it is amazing how it doesn't to most.

Actually I would be mad that we were only 9-3 if we f*** around and lose games like we usually lose games..........

And I'll explain that more in-depth later, but I'm drinking now.

Priorities.

Discounting the shortened season, where Iowa went 6-2 (.750) you have to back to 2014 to find a 7 win season.

If we get good QB play I'm saying 10-2 or maybe 9-3. Last season's OL 4*s bust out their potential and a new QB gets Sam a monster season.

Weird symmetry to the Hawk standings in the division. Beginning in 2015 the ranks are 1,2,3,4,3,2,1. That trend will be broken with another Division win in 2022.

Will never understand why Barta schedules teams like NDSU and SDSU for games that are supposed to be gimmes. If you’re scheduling an FCS school, you better schedule one that you know you will beat.
It's not Barta's call......it is KF's call.
