2023 Iowa Hawkeyes Soccer - B1G Tourney Champs and NCAA Tournament updates

I had to do some digging, as schools often agree not to publish scores as so many subs and tinkering are done in these exhibitions. It’s a safe bet Iowa won over South Dakota as, despite a big crowd, none of their vocal parents discussed it on social media. However, I did find the last result. Iowa up 1-0 in the first half of their season opener vs FGCU. Preseason All-B1G Meike Ingles with the goal. On ESPN+ now.
I might have remembered wrong, but Ingles, Roling and Enneking, were they all absent during the last season? They are all back.
All had injury problems: Ingles the beginning of the season, Roling the end of the season, and Enneking beginning and then again at the end. Enneking’s facial injury looked pretty awful. Those are pretty significant players to miss.
2-0-0 Iowa vs 2-0-0 Iowa State at 8 in a hot Iowa City tonight at 8 to kick off the Cy-Hawk Series. I’ll provide updates for those without BTN+.
Hawks win! 2-1. Looks like they easily outplayed the Clowns by the stats. I wasn't able to go.
They outplayed them, but Enneking had to come up big a couple times in goal. Love that Roling, Otto, and Ingles have all been a handful on the attack this year, but unfortunately Ingles picked up another injury last game and didn’t play last night.
A handful but need to start producing more goals. We have had plenty of shots for only 4 goals.
HUGE week on the road for the Hawks, with votes showing poised to break into the Top 25. At #18 Virginia tonight, then at George Mason Sunday on ESPN+. Sam Cary is the reigning B1G defensive player of the week, and goalkeeper Enneking made Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week.
Yep. #18 Virginia, which has only one loss in two years at home (to eventual national finalists FSU, 1-0).
A win Sunday at George Mason on ESPN+ SHOULD put the Hawks in the top 25.
BTN needs to fill their air time with something. They lost a lot of football games this year.
Hawkeyes finish the non-conference portion of the schedule unbeaten, and nearly perfect (apart from a scoreless draw at #18 Virginia). Otto, McGroarty, and Cary with the goals today. Top 25 debut on Monday? Illinois up next to start B1G regular season…

Yeah, they aren't bad. Only losses to 2 SEC schools but we had them almost doubled up on shots.
But what do I know. My junior high girls just lost 1-0 giving up a pk and outshot the other team 21-1. Oh, and we missed TWO pks of our own.
Sometimes I want to cry being a coach. Or break stuff. Or both.

Beat Rutgers yesterday on a lone goal from Josie Durr of Solon for their second W in a row. HUGE matchup this weekend with Nebraska. Iowa has statistically the best defense in the NATION, but Nebraska has the nation’s leading scorer in Eleanor Dale.

Big final match this Sunday at noon for the Hawkeyes. They currently sit in the 8th and final playoff spot, and did themselves a favor by getting a draw at Michigan last night (courtesy a Josie Durr breakaway, linked below). The other teams that Iowa is fighting for those final spots with all play each other.

Love how Dilani has put Durr, the Solon Speedster, up top. She's scored multiple goals and PKs with her breakaways and bursts. Amazing she still has the speed after her ACL injuries:

Iowa backed in to the B1G Women's Soccer Tournament. Lost 3-0 to MSU, but Northwestern and Michigan both failed to win. Rematch with the now #1 seeded Spartans in the B1G First Round.

I hate that Nebraska was an Elite 8 XI. Our B1G Tournament Semifinal victim was also an Elite Eight and finished top 5. All three of our conference tournament scalps finished top 20:Finish the season ranked #24.

Sam Cary and Macy Enneking are first team All-North region, which means they are going to be on 1st-4th All-American teams. Now join Pickart and Lacasse (both 4th Team in 2014) as our only A-As ever.
However, Johnston and Durr were our MVPs, McGroarty our offensive POTY, Greer our defensive POTY. Spreading the love.

On the other hand, I see that only one Big Ten team was in the men's tournament, Indiana. Seems like a down year? I'd think the Big Ten usually is not a 1-bid league.
