Don't know much about history. Don't know much biology. Don't know much about a science book. I was a math major.

What the heck, birthday is Jan 15, 1997?

Yeah he's a year old for his grade. Why's that weird? Starting kids later to give them an academic and athletic advantage is kind of becoming a trend for parents. Although he's not as much in between grades as most kids whose parents do that, it's still not that crazy IMO.

I am one of the people who is totally grossed out by such advantage-seeking. I understand holding a summer birthday.

I'd agree that a full year is a bit much, but by the time a kid is a junior/senior in high school, there isn't that much of a difference. In college, it's pretty much irrelevant. If he were playing basketball with hopes of making the league, then it would be a disadvantage.

Ford26...sounds like you may have had a son at Fort Dodge and didn't like all the attention Sam was getting. Sounds like a great young man by all accounts.

Remarkable insight, freyvet (as in veterinarian?) But, no, not even close.

In fact, my son has had many interactions with Sam over the year at different functions and very much appreciates the kind of guy he consistently is. I'm told by people in his class at Iowa that he is a first-rate person and looks to be a great teammate. I have been impressed with him, which is why I was reading his bio in the first place. I noticed his birthday, found it interesting -- but given my own dark bent and bias.

I do think having another year of maturity makes a difference. I would have loved to have played another year of HS at 19, against kids a year younger. as Uncle Rico said, "We would have taken state for sure!" Again, I get having a summer birthday and holding a child back.

This paragraph doesn't match your last post

Let me clear it up for you: I am one of the people who is totally grossed out by such advantage-seeking.

It was a general statement. Uno said it was not weird that parents would hold a kid for academic and athletic advantages; I responded to that opinion. There was nothing malicious against Sam and his accomplishments, I don't know how or why Sam is a year behind his age group. You're reading more into it.

Liked for the Napoleon Dynamite reference.

And I'm not really either for or against holding a kid back. It really doesn't make any difference by the time they are juniors and seniors IMO.
