3 Things that need to change by next year

Iowa
1. Tyler Cook and Cordell Pemsl need consistent jump shot. The bully bump backing into your man to the basketball is over done and the guys get a lot of double team help. Cordell never tried a 3 all year and that okay but when Pemsl, Cook and Uhl are on the floor with Baer and Bohannon, it's two shooters and board crashers. Defenses can pack the lane. Easy to defense against Iowa.

2. Must teach free throw shooting with out bending knees and low ball start position for shoot. using legs for a stand still set shot only pushes the ball back 4 to 6 inches and ball hits the rim and caroms off. The ball should be in the triple threat position ( upper torso) and only use arm motion strength and follow thru. Slows ball rotation and less things to repeat for more consistent results. Iowa's free throw shoot and turnover cost them a lot of games, especially today.

3. No more Christian Williams at point and Moss is not the alternative solution. Williams is not nor should not spend any more time at Point. He will never be Devyn Marble 2.0. Ellingson is not a good ball handler either. Connor needs to be given the back up spot to JoBo ASAP. JoBo, Baer, Moss, Pemsl and Cook are probably next year's starting unit. Must build bench with Dailey, Wagner, Kriener, Garza and CMac.

Uhl is not a factor on offense. Ellingson and Williams are placeholders and need to evaluate their purpose at Iowa. Iowa could use two scholarship opened up by summer with recruting season of class of 2018 (Wieskamp's class) opening soon. Wieskamp could help Iowa recruiting on AAU circuit this summer. Iowa needs to land more top 150 kids to advance program.

1. You can't change that. It is what it is.

2. Same thing. You can coach shooting form all day long, but by the time kids get to this level, you're not going to teach 4 guys that are 50/50 shooters at the line to be anything drastically better. You have it, or you don't... Focus more on teaching them to get better at getting to the stripe. Reggie Evans wasn't a great free throw shooter, but he got there enough to be effective. An extreme example, but even shooting poorly we could have done a lot better this year if they got there more often.

3. Agreed. This team needs a scorer at point guard. Can Connor Maccaffrey do that? Don't know. We'll find out. This year was an experiment of sorts on 'positionless' basketball, where we have too many power forwards. It worked out great at times, but we saw by midseason that Pemsl and Cook can't work the floor together, and Wagner I don't think is good enough to be that complimentary player. I think we need to use that 'positionless' theory on guards instead. Bohannon is an outstanding guard, and very servicable as a point guard as needed. Need a guy that can create off the dribble though. He's not that guy. I'd love to see two guys that can handle the ball and have another player that can penetrate and score. That's one of the biggest common denominators amongst teams that have advanced in the tourney.

Still mad the season is over, but there are a lot of good things looking forward.

1.. Need a real 2 guard who can score and defend and shows up each game. We won't have that next year unless Moss makes a huge improvement or CM turns out to be a stud. I do not think either will happen.
2. Reduce TOs by a ton. Bigs committed too many. They kill you and lose games like today.
3. Need a player to replace Jok - a shooter and scorer.
4. Need a true big for defending teams like Purdue who have bigs like Haas and Swanigan. Will Garza be ready as a frosh? Doubtful.
5. Need better D where no one is a weak link. Bo is too slow to defend quick players and we break down. Jok was not a great defender. Frosh bigs broke down, too. Our transition D was horrible in many games. I think our D will improve next year.

Three Things That WILL Change Next Year..

1. The Roster....Jack Nunge, Luka Garza & Connor McCaffery join the team.

McCaffery gives Fran another option at Point as JBo's backup. It would not surprise me is he the first option off the bench at point.

Nunge..make no mistake he can flat out shoot (including free throws)...IMO he plays a 3 along side Baer. 6'11" (3)..we get bigger.

Garza ..the missing link. An aggressive 6'10" inside presence..especially on defense.

2. The Roster ... does anyone transfer?

3. The Roster ...Returning Player Minutes...huge jump from last season. You saw the worse of freshman Bohannon, Moss, Pemsl, Cook, Kriener...AKA...you have not seen the best (consistently)...you will see improvement in all phases...as well with Baer & Wagner.

From what I read..Cook was in the practice facility after the game. This group doesn't give me the impression they will sit around & get fat.

After starting out 3-5 (finishing 16-10 with big wins over ISU, Michigan, Purdue, Maryland & Wisconsin)..WILL...change how we do next year. A very talented returning group with the addition of 3 recruits who could have an immediate impact.

Bohannon is serviceable at PG? He averaged a double/double the last 3 games and made the all Freshman B1G team.

He is a good PG, but he would be benefit from an aggressive 2 guard. Someone who can attack the paint. Anyone see TCU's PG get into the lane on consistent basis? The kid was attacking and when we went zone, he just sat at the FT line and then was able to attack or dish off. I was impressed by that kid.

Bohannon needs some help, he can't do it all himself and we need a consistent 2 guard ( I think Moss will be). Moss has work on being more aggressive with the ball. Dribble penetrate the paint on the swing. Don't wait for the damn ball screen.

This. I can't believe all the idiotic posts I've read lately about him being just okay, but we still need a "slasher" at pg. I'm pretty confident that most teams in the league would be thrilled to have him running the point

So my takeaway is from that is that Iowa needs to be better at the things they aren't so good at. Sometimes it isn't that easy.

1) It would be great if Cook and Pemsl were better outside shooters, It would also be great if were 6-4 and could throw a 95 mph fastball. I'm sure they will both work on that part of their game, but it's not as if they were bad players or Iowa's offense was miserable. Pemsl set the freshman record for FG% by an Iowa player, and Cook averaged 12 points and 5 boards per game. They are both good. I hope they add a perimeters aspect to their games, but love that Iowa actually has options when throwing the ball in the post.

2) You don't think they work on FT form with guys? If FT shooting was just a matter of form and practice, there would be no bad free throw shooters. Some guys are just better than others. Cook and Pemsl got better throughout the year, my guess is they might be able to get their percentages in the 68-70 range.

3) The roster decisions are all what gets worked out in the off-season. I'm glad you have deemed which players are worthy of a scholarship and which ones need to move on, send the memo to Fran. To the players themselves. What exactly did you expect from Ellingson? He made 47% of his 3's and took care of the ball. Is he ever going to be a 15 point per game scorer? No. Usable bench player? Yes. For the other guys, I'm not sure why you want to rip guys just because they aren't what you think they should be. Fran has shown he will have the hard conversations with players (last year Fleming and Hutton moved on).

Cook and Pemsyl will benefit the most from Garza. Garza is a true post and will start day 1 at the 5.
Cook avg. 12 & 5 playing the opposing teams center. I still think his broken finger is bothering him
and I expect him to be able to catch the ball at more consistent basis once it finally heals.
Pemsyl is never going to be a 3 point shooter and doesn't need to be.
They both need to work on their free throw shooting.

JBo does need to work on his defense, is offense is outstanding.
Connor will be his backup and thank god I don't have to watch CW try to dribble anymore.
Moss is lacking confidence and has all the tools to be a great player.
I expect big things from him next year.

Nunge is in contention to be Indiana Mr. Basketball and underrated as a 3 star player.
He is going to play a lot at the 3. If Wagner wants to play he needs to work on a jump shot otherwise Nunge is going to take his minutes. I think Baer will still come off the bench, but will play a lot.

JBo, Moss, Cook, Baer, Pemsyl, Wagner & Kreiner are a great foundation to build on. The 3 freshmen are going to have a impact on our roster. These 10 are the future of this team.
I really think Fran needs to cut down to a 10 man rotation. The other 4 need to move on or get comfortable
on riding the pine.

The biggest thing is that Fran is going to have to get the offensive/defensive lineups worked out.
Cook & Pemsl are both great on the block offensive players but suffer when a team packs the lane. This means you need to play them with enough shooters to ensure spacing. That means you can NEVER have Uhl/Wagner/Williams on the court at the same time with them. This leads to bad possessions where you have 1-2 players working the ball and your best offense is quite often a rebound attempt.
Baer and Moss with decent 3point shots give you playing time. Can Ellington be consistent enough to get minutes and provide spacing.
Length is great and U/W/W have provided some very good defense, but you can't let the other team play 5 on 3.
Not sure what Garza's range is, but Kreiner's jump shot is needed at the 5 is Uhl/Wagner is in at the 4 or 3. Nunge's range will probably take minutes away from Wagner and Uhl for spacing.
Iowa loses one of the best Offensive shooters in quite awhile and needs to replace the offense. You can't expect more than Bohanon has provided the last 2-3 weeks and Cook will only have incremental gains. Who is going to step up?

Honestly this entire season Dom Uhl showed me nothing. Sorry Dom. Much like Jok this year next year Jordan Bohannon is going to be bugged, hugged, mugged, and thugged all the while he is on the court. Thank God we can't use the excuse, "they're only freshman" next year as it pertains to Cordell, Tyler, Isiah, Ryan, Jordan.

Disagree with a lot said in here.

1) Defense should be a priority this off-season, both individual and team defense. Iowa finished 122nd in the nation in defensive efficiency and 42nd in offensive efficiency. Defense can and should be taught. It's the easiest way for this team to improve. Wisconsin makes it a priority when their recruits come to campus to teach them how to play defense without "fouling" and they do a fantastic job without big time athletes. Iowa is going to be extremely deep in the frontcourt. No more layups. Make them earn their points from the foul line.

2) Iowa averaged 13.9 turnovers/game good, 258th best in the nation. Cook and Pemsl averaged 2.4 and 1.6 turnovers per game which is an extremely high number for big guys. They need to figure it out or sit. JBo averaged 2.2 TO/game but I'll give him a pass with his extremely high usage rate and 2.3 assist to TO ratio. They need to take care of the ball next year.

3) Nunge can't guard the three position and shouldn't have to play there. You're decreasing his unique value when you do that. He's 6'11" and not extremely agile. The last game of the season he was punished by a D1 caliber small forward who got to the rack often and dished for open threes when help defense arrived. He is an extremely good shooter and rebounder who can pull defenders away from the basket and open the middle up for drives. Put him at the 4 or 5 and his value increases exponentially.

4) We don't need another point guard. JBo is incredible. Ideally, we need an upgrade at the 2 or 3 position. Someone who can collapse the defense and defend their position. Currently, help is not on the way.

This.

Can't believe all the posters on here saying Iowa needs a point guard..LOL. Lost all credibility by going there. Bohannon is the best PG Iowa has had since BJ and in some respects he may be the best shooting point guard Iowa has ever had. He is limited on defense by his height but I'll take his grittiness everyday. This team lacked muscle and height in the middle, and experience that will come in time. Iowa's existing roster with next years recruits may become the best Iowa team ever since 70 or in the mid 50's.

Projected Starters:
Bohannon
Moss
Baer
Cook
Pemsi

Backups:
Williams
Dailey
Uhl
Ellingson
Wagner
Kriener

New Players:

Jack Nunge
Luka Garza
Connor McCaffery

The front court next year is going to get very interesting. There is a massive logjam in the front court with Baer, Wagner, Uhl, Cook, Pemsi, Kriener, Nunge and Garza competing for those positions. If I had to guess either one of Nunge, Garza or maybe even Kriener will redshirt. I just don't see any other way, unless someone *knock on wood* gets hurt. Hopefully Connor McCaffery is a good offensive player, besides Ellingson not a single backup guard has shown any shooting ability.

Finally, the whole damn team needs to be much better at 2 things next year, Defense and Free Throw shooting. Damn they are horrible.
