Has to be close to 40 cars, trucks, and semis still in ditch.

Is there still a tow ban in that stretch of road?

last week it sounded like with the amount of vehicles in the ditch, compared with trucks to be able to pull them out, that it would still take a while.

If i recall correctly, there was a ISP officer on KCRG last week saying that they have to tow out vehicles mostly overnight for safety.

Some of those vehicles must have been driven by idiots. You would have to been driving so much faster than conditions called for it’s ridiculous. Upside down cars 30+ feet from the road.

They didn’t just simply slide off the road, it’s like Dukes of Hazard type driving.
Yeah, there was a whole lot of stupid last week. Even after the snow ended, it was so cold nothing would melt off the road, and people were still flying into ditches. The snow ended Saturday morning, and people were still going into ditches on Tuesday.

I have commuted for 20+ years in mostly front wheel drive cars. If your mindset is “never ever touch the brakes” you can actually drive in almost anything. The key is keeping enough distance between vehicles so it’s possible.

It’s everybody else that scares the crap out of me.

The Iowa autobahn...
90% of the ditch cars are on the stretch 1/2 mile north and 1/2 mile south of north liberty exit. That little section has been bad forever with big open fields to the west blowing snow into the road. Adding ever more NL soccer moms and young university drivers and it's a mine field of bad drivers.

You are not wrong. Back when I drove IC to CR every day, and I had a 4WD truck, I would be amazed at how many people would pass me going 15+ mph faster than I was. I had a little game that I played in my head whenever I saw that.

How many miles would I have to travel to then see that vehicle in the ditch? I would estimate that I saw around 50% of those clowns in the ditch in the next 1-5 miles. While I agree with you that way too many people were driving WAY too fast for the conditions...it isn't all that hard to flip a vehicle, because the ground wasn't frozen at all. It's easy to "catch" a tire and roll a car when the tire "digs" in right off of the hard surface.

I worked outside plowing and clearing snow for livestock and wildlife all day on Saturday and the ground underneath the snow was not only unfrozen it was mushy, even areas that were gravel were shifty like a sandy beach. BTW, I think the area on I80 west of Iowa City was even worse in terms of vehicles in the ditch. Crazy.

I nicknamed that stretch "The Cannonball Run" for a very good reason. Far too many drivers (I'm assuming many are commuters between CR and IC) seem to do nothing but push irresponsibly way beyond what a 2 lane interstate with that amount of traffic can handle.

Thankfully that will be remedied in the near future. Hopefully anyway...

Between Exit 10 & Exit 13 was really bad, the roads had a glaze of ice on them for days.

Some of those cars are in deep, and I bet they won’t be out until spring.

DOT will order them out soon enough as they try and reclaim the shoulders. I've seen some that are going to have to be dug out. I'd love to watch as some of them get drug out on their roofs.

Commuting is such a waste of time and life.

I feel sorry for the poor peasants who have to do it.
