42 pts. on 16 shots

So far it's been the Jok and Cook show on offense. Not a lot from their supporting cast in the two games against good opponents.

Who will step up offensively in support as the season progresses?

Will individuals, and the team, figure out how to play defense at some point this season?

Yeah, I get all those things but we don't have someone capable of that very often. Fran will get it figured out, enjoy the show.

Fran's recruiting, or lack thereof, is rearing its ugly head once again. His unbridled optimism for the project players aka guys who should be playing at the Western Illinois level knows no bounds. Quickness-nope. Shooters-nope. Rebounding-nope. Create own shot-nope. Defense-clearly a nope. Anyone capable of scoring not named Jok or Cook? Nope.

Outside of Cook and Jok, this team is comprised of guys who are not big ten caliber players. When a former walk on is your 3rd best player, you haven't found a hidden gem, you have failed miserably in recruiting.

I have strained my eyes looking for a speck of improvement in Ellingson, Wagner, Uhl, Williams, Moss and Baer and have not found any. When Jok isn't going Curry, we will see Lickliteresque offensive performances. How can Fran and his staff fail (once again) to recruit a: PG help b: scoring help c: someone capable of playing defense. I do not buy the "Dale Jones was our 3rd scoring option" excuse. I feel awful for the kid and hope he pushes through and is able to return next year at Iowa or elsewhere, but he would not make a dent in this team's struggles on either end.

The pathetic defense that has been on display under Fran is an absolute joke. If we aren't getting torched by shooters who have career games on 80% shooting from the field, we are giving up uncontested layups or tip in's under the basket.

Fran is a solid X and O guy and from a good citizen perspective, he has brought solid character kids in who aren't getting into trouble. The flip side is that outside of an occasional Jok or Cook recruit, the program is at or beneath Penn State level in the talent department. I can take losing with a young team, but this is garbage basketball on both ends of the floor.

Lot of people seem to be buying into this false narrative that Iowa has never been good defensively under Fran. Once again, Iowa has finished in the top 35 in defensive efficiency three of the last four years. They are bad defensively this year, this isn't some reoccurring theme we see every season under Fran though.

You just don't get it do you. go away. So unless they don't play perfect with a completely new lineup at the beginning of the year they are garbage and not as good as Penn state? wow I bet it fun being your parents growing up.

I agree that Fran seems to be able to somewhat steady the ship by the midseason point, but there isn't a facet of defe

I dont get it? That is laughable. Is this Fran's second year at Iowa? Did we just move up to D-1 or join the Big Ten from the Horizon League? Go look at Penn State's recruiting class then come back and tell me I don't get it. Better yet, watch tonight's game and tell me I don't get it.

Where did I say I expected them to play perfect basketball? I would like to watch a 5 minute stretch where we don't give up blow by layups or throw the ball away incessantly. There are other young teams out there that are playing much better than we are. If Jok doesn't go nuts against Memphis, we lose that game in UVA style. Did you notice the points scored by Seton Hall and UVA in other games? They did not play elite teams, just teams that guarded a little bit and were not outmatched at every spot on the floor.

Too harsh and I've been pretty hard this team too. Ellingson has shown progress and I say that Moss has too, although we haven't seen him play other than this year. I said from the beginning that Jok was not the kind of leader we needed or have had in past years. He plays NO defense, can't or won't rebound and still struggles getting into the lane. Uhl next year, I'm afraid, is going to be more of the same as far as leadership. Feel really bad for Jones and he probably would have helped some.

I think most thought this was a down year and I now think we're in for 2 down years. Add a really good point guard and we are back to being very good down the road. I really like the look of most of our bigs and adding 2 more cannot hurt if Fran can find time for them all. Fran has struggled with guards, we need play makers and I'm not sure I see them on this team, but they are very young.

Penn State? ... have you looked at their basketball program? Please don't exaggerate... what Chambers has done in his time at Penn State to what McCaffery has accomplished during the same time at Iowa...there is NO comparison. That is factual.

Now if you talking this year (ONLY)...lets see how the two teams end up. Penn State has some young talent...it took Chambers how long?

Is it even remotely possible that the garbage basketball (as you define it) is to a degree due to being a "young team"? even remotely. It is not out of the ordinary for a team to struggle when a program has a large turnover from the previous year...its just not.

I understand you don't think much of McCaffery...that certainly is your right to post such.

Yet, this same coach, with all his failures in recruiting and deficiencies in coaching ability, seems to keep finishing in the top third of the Big Ten, going to post season tournaments and producing first team Big Ten players.

Must have amazing luck!

and the mentioned players White, Marble, Jok would all say that Fran did indeed have a little something to do with their development.

I like Fran as a person and as an X and O guy. As a recruiter, he is totally lost at this level. He has some pie in the sky view of putting a Syracuse like team out there with long athletic multi-position guys who can run and shoot, but recruits guys who can do none of the above. He landed Cook and I give him a ton of credit for that, but do you think Cook is going to stay or have success surrounded by role players?

Illinois is awful. DePaul is awful. Missouri is awful. Ohio State has been down. Outside of Cook, have we landed a difference maker in the last 3-4 recruiting classes? I thought this style of play and making winning our last two first round NCAA games was supposed to improve our brand? Fran came here talking about all the great guard play at Iowa, winning Big Ten titles, advancing deep in the tourney. Those are his words not mine. It does not take John Wooden to realize Tyler Cook isn't going to get it done by himself.

A serviceable point guard would make this team significantly better today. Would they make the tourney? Unlikely, but they would be better and it would provide hope for the future. Fran had the junior and senior years of MG and AC plus this class to not put the team in this position and he failed. You can spin it how you like, but this is factual.

Im not spinning anything...comparing Iowa to Penn State is an exaggeration...I think you know that. Exaggerating doesn't help you make your points. Just like claiming with recruiting he is totally lost at this level....totally? One could argue it could be better..but totally lost? I don't think Garza or Nunge would agree with you. I know Tyler Cook wouldn't. Recruiting can ALWAYS be better....I would love to have an all-B1G freshman point guard...who wouldn't...I'm just not ready to lay claim that Christian Williams & JBO cannot be serviceable point guards, which is what you are calling for.

What Illinois, DePaul & Missouri has to do with anything is confusing.

Those who don't think very much of McCaffery or his recruiting do this everytime when things go south (like is happening with this team). I understand it makes' it much easier to make your points...opposed to when things are going well.

I went to my first Iowa basketball in 1965 & have gone to games since...doesn't make me anything more than an experienced fan. Iowa BB in general has never out recruited schools such as Michigan, MichiganState, Purdue, OhioState, Illinois, Indiana...I don't think anyone would debate that.

Most coaches say a lot of things at their opening press conferences..what he has done is return Iowa BB to some level of success from the depth of despair...is it possible we take a step back this year? sure...

HOO LEE SHEET MAN...get a grip.

IL is a good example of "great" recruiting with crap results.

Iowa is not IL. But they are getting pretty good results. And for all of the "poor" recruiting, McC sure seems to still be getting good recruiting classes. The next 2 years look to have great classes signed/committed!

You post this same crap in every thread. Why don't you start your own thread, label it, "I hate our coach and players. Who's with me?" where you and all those who feel that way can commiserate with the horrible fate you've suffered since McCaffery has been here.
