Major magnitude 7.8 earthquake - 34 km west of Gaziantep, Turkey, on Monday, Feb 6, 2023 at 3:17 am (GMT +2)

The quake hit at a shallow depth of 24.1 km beneath the epicenter near Gaziantep, Turkey, early morning on Monday, February 6th, 2023, at 4:17 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 7.4 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 7.0, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 7.7, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 7.8, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 7.6.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
If the preliminary data about magnitude and depth are correct, the quake was extremely dangerous. It has the potential to cause catastrophic impacts on people and infrastructure, probably involving severe and wide-spread damage, especially in areas near the epicenter.

Reminder from one of the board Geologist that the Richter scale is a magnitude scale and is not linear but logarithmic. So a size 7 earthquake is 10 times stronger than a size 6. A size 8 is a 100 times stronger than a 6. To give you an idea of how big this was to occur in a populated area.

There is also a Moment magnitude scale that is better and often confused in media. It too is log based. It better accounts for the overall size and shear/slip which typically correspond to area impacted and length of impact.

Yep

Every 0.3 increase is a doubling of the amplitude of the quake
7.3 is 2x greater than a 7; 7.6 is 4x greater amplitude than 7

All Iowans have essentially been through a tornado thanks to the derecho.

I've always wondered what it would be like to go through an earthquake. I'd be running for the nearest open space

These scenes remind me how I think one of the worst ways to go would be trapped in collapsed rubble, not even that hurt yet unable to move for days while you tried to remain sane and hope to be found.

Waiting. Sleep. Awake. So thirsty, throat is sticking together and eyes burn from the mix of chemical dust. Pinned under a shifting load of thousands of pounds of rubble. Sleep. Awaken from the cramping of limbs that haven't been able to flex for hours. Or has it been days, no way to tell time, just dark. So dark, you see flashes of light all around, but can only turn your head a little to the left and right. And when your eyes open, they burn from the dust that caked all over your eyes and lids and lashes.. No tears left to clean my eyes. So hungry, feels like a week since you heard your family. The dust creates an insulation around you, that you swear you can hear your heart beat and the blood flowing through your veins. And rumbling all around, perhaps that is people digging you out of the four story building. Or maybe it is just the shifting rubble that you hear and feel. Energy is waining, and your lower leg hurts so bad, you can't see the trauma but the blood is slowly leaking from your body by the severed leg. Hours pass like days, dying alone is so sad and slow.

yeah, Im with you. Rather go out fast and early.

Earthquakes have always been fascinating to me, just wish they weren't so devastating to human life like this. The loss of life will likely be in the 10s of thousands before its all said and done. Tragic.
