My grandfather was in 3/506 PIR. He was supposed land on DZ D and help secure bridges over the Douve Eiver. He ended up on the edge of the DZ, but couldn't hook up with his unit (his Battalion Commander was killed in the drop) because of enemy presence on the DZ. He ended up fighting with an element of the 501st PIR for around 4-5 days before hooking up with his company just outside of Carentan.
