Was at the game last night, so I apologize if this has already been discussed by some.

First, let me say that the Iowa fan turnout and support was great - as has been well documented everywhere the last 48 hours. I was absolutely proud to be a Hawkeye walking around Indy all weekend and especially at the game last night. However, I have two complaints:
  1. Our marketing department is vastly improved this year, and I give them a lot of credit for that. But, I was telling anyone that would listen that the stripes idea was not a good one. In a neutral field game like this, you have to go with your team color that is going to stand out the best compared to the team you are playing. Having half of our fans wearing black when the opposing team's main color is dark green is not a good idea. We sat in an odd section last night, so we obviously wore black to the game. Anyone watching on TV or sitting across the stadium from us would have no idea if we were Spartan or Hawkeye fans. I watched the replay on TV when we got home this evening, and it looked even less spectacular on TV than it did at the game last night. Can you imagine how awesome that stadium would have looked if most of the Hawkeye fans were wearing gold. There would have been no doubt in anyone's mind that Iowa had 70% of the fans in attendance.
  2. Did we even have a student section in the stadium last night? I'm assuming we did (and we were on the opposite end of the stadium, so it was hard for me to see down there. But, if we did - the MSU student section put ours to shame. They had the pom pons, choreographed cheers, and you could just tell that it was a student section. When I looked down towards where our band was located, I couldn't even tell if we had students at the game? Again, maybe I just had a bad angle, but we had some MSU fans behind us that made the comment: "Iowa may have more fans, but there student section has nothing on ours." Unfortunately, I couldn't have agreed with them more.
Again, our fan support was great last night, and it was awesome to see so many Hawks in Indy this weekend. Just two small complaints that I had to get off my chest.

Totally agree with your number one and it would have looked a lot better to be all yellow last night.

I agree, yellow always works and looks best especially inside.

Don't really understand whey we didn't have a student section like MSU did.

Yeah but their student section is for try-hards and has been that way since Tom Izzo became the head bball coach. So I'm not too insulted when someone says that MSU's student section was better than ours.

True story.

For what it's worth, the MSU fans sitting around us were impressed by the stripes, and they were definitely noticeable. The size of the Iowa turnout blew away our new friends from MSU, but they were totally impressed that we even color-coordinated. I figured it wouldn't be noticeable, but it was pretty clear. Also, there was no doubt where the Iowa fans were. The MSU green stood out and was pretty much limited to about half of one side and half of one end zone. There was no doubt that Iowa fans ruled that stadium, even with the color coordination thing. That said, I do think it would have been even more striking if we'd all worn gold.

I thought it was pretty impressive that the fans were able to partially pull off the striped sections at a neutral site, it looked impressive on TV. I'm not sure folks that weren't Iowa fans would have noticed, perhaps a staffer should have passed a note on to the broadcasting crew so it could be mentioned or referenced on air, otherwise it was an ambitious plan that was pulled off quite well all things considered.

I don't disagree though, a "be Bold, wear Gold' strategy would have been just fine by me too :)

Stripes looked good from my side. I was impressed with the number of hawks fans that did it. Look good in my video I shot when the team came out.

MSU had left poms on about 4-5 sections. They weren't all students. They've also been there 3-4 times so cut Iowa some slack.
