A curt coach in the postgame

Sometimes I think Fran gets a little testy and short. No doubt.

But in all fairness the reporter intentionally and transparently poked him by saying "disfunction". What a f*** stick. I'm sure Fran was pissed after that. I would have been too.

This is why I have such disdain for "journalists"... too many of them try too hard to be cute. Just do your f***ing job well and stop trying to make it about you.

Not a good look Fran.

Legit, and fairly softball, questions met with contempt equates to a coach searching for answers.

Fran just does not look good with some of those answers. And it kind of makes you question his ability as a coach when he cannot even give any thoughtful analysis about the issues with the game and/or his team.

I agree. He can't be insightful after a difficult loss to explain what the other team did well and what his team could improve upon. I would imagine his inability to answer difficult questions and maintain composure is a window as to why his record in close games, by whatever metric you want to use, is abysmal.

Journalists have every right to ask the tough questions and for some even dumb ones. I’d prefer questions like Chad’s not be asked. How important is Nunge as a backup? Really, everyone already knew the fvcking answer. If Fran wants to go ballistic on a ref fine, but being stubborn and an ass towards a reporter that asks a question he don’t like is beyond pathetic.

There was a reporter from the Quad Cities Times who tried to
make rough interviews for Lute Olson. The best way to shut
up a "gotcha" sports reporter is to keep winning and that is
what Lute did.

Everyone knows the answer, but Chad needs a quote from the head coach of the team to put in his story tomorrow. It’s not hard, just answer the questions.

Todd lickliter was an unlikable guy. But Fran is just further demonstrating his weakness. He doesn't know how to get up from a punch. No ability to rethink the strategy when things don't go as plan. Rally does his teams recover from large deficits. When adversity strikes, he gets overwhelmed with emotion and takes it out on the refs, or goes numb and just watch dejected as his team gets their ass kicked.

I think he overall is a likeable guy who is great at prepping his team from off season and between games. But too stubborn and rigid to react well in the moment. He may not have capacity to learn new tricks.

The reporters comments hurt because how true they were, and how much he knew this season could elevate his legacy. Fran has plenty to be proud of, but reacting like this only happens when his head is in the wrong place.

At some point Fran needs to stop making it about the officiating. I assume that’s what he was getting after in his answers when questioned about Michigan’s defense and Iowa’s offensive “dysfunction”

All of his other answers seemed fairly thoughtful

He can't think of a better question than something to which we already know the answer?
That is why people tire of "journalists"
They've entered the "what they have in common with a Catfish" threshold. Right up there with Politicians, that's bad.

And most Coaches have some "journalists" I'm sure they don't like, and maybe for good reason (see Catfish). But if everything has to be asked just so the Coach isn't an ass, that's not good either.

But Belichick has been getting away with it for 2 decades so there's that.

That is journalism. Instead of providing his (Chad’s) opinion about Nunge in his piece in the DSM Register tomorrow, he will provide Fran’s opinion in quotes. Which is why he asked the question

I think he came in pissed and, really, the first question wasn’t great and set the tone. ”Explain the dysfunction” really wasn’t a great start. Other ways that could be asked to draw a better answer and Fran is who he is. Post-game press conferences after a loss aren’t his strong suit.

Chad’s question was right on. The initial question about dysfunction established that “dysfunction” was the object fact, rather than the reporter’s opinion, and the reporter pushed Fran to explain dysfunction. Fran disputed the premise, which was fair. I would have liked him to expand more, but that’s not the kind of question that’s going to be well received by a lot of coaches.

Fran plays right into journalists hands. The first question was a gotcha question that every journalist knows will get Fran turning red. Fran fell right into it and the journalists got what they wanted for their headlines. I understand after a hard loss wanting to take it out on some journalist but you have to be smarter than that or the journalists will just make you into looking like a fool.

Side note I think this relates to why Fran can't coach his teams out of jams. Dude gets so fired up in game that he can't think straight. Just like in the postgame interviews.

After watching the whole interview I have to say the questions asked by the reporters were pretty inane and with obvious answers. All of the questions led to answers that neither the Coach, nor the players would ever want to give: We played like crap.

Sure the fans are going to want to know why Iowa got beat so bad by Michigan. It was a s___show the last half of the 2nd half. The reporters know it. The coaching staff knows it. The players know it. This was a game that just did not go Iowa's way from the beginning. It was the most disappointing game of the year for us on a whole lot of levels. Why pile on with stupid questions in the postgame?

I am not blaming the officials. But the play stoppage multiple times in the beginning had an impact on the flow that Garza would normally have. It made him a little more tentative on Offense and the whole team seemed to be back on their heels a bit.

Then the Nunge injury. Not only do we lose Jack for this game -- it could be much longer. Have to be a concern in the back of your mind the rest of the game.

Michigan stayed right in front of our perimeter players which effectively shut down JW. Unlike Wagner who put his head down and just went to the rim, our perimeter guys did not go all in with their drives (except Jbo) which made them ineffective on offense.

Then Connor goes down. It was just another hit to a team that did not need another hit. Btw, all of these things just helped to build Michigan's confidence.

Iowa's shots were not falling.

Fran then sat his wings and put in reserves. The reserves turned the ball over, tried to do things not in the regular flow of the offense and the rout began.

Why not start the questions with:

Coach, this was obviously a very frustrating game on many levels -- what do you need to do to recover from this?

Or

Now having played Michigan what is your assessment of their team?

Or

We have not been as effective with our offensive rebounding recently, how do you coach offensive rebounding and what do we need to do to improve in this area to get second chance opportunities?

Or

How do we get open and better shots on the perimeter when the other team is crowding us like Michigan?

In my opinion, the reporters should have enough sense to assume that the Iowa representatives in the postgame presser are going to be dejected, frustrated and very unhappy after the performance yesterday so why just beat them up more by asking them to explain why they were so terrible. Let's just assume that it was terrible, they are feeling terrible and then ask questions about how to go forward.

Maybe they can let Fran write the questions.

Lute lost his share...

Lute had the Chokeyes and left town to a warm weather place he could recruit at elite level. He was
never great X/O guy, he was recruiter. Lute melted down I think a year before he left. I think they were about a 3rd place B1G team but they lost something like 4-5 games by a few points...always close but no cigar. Gannon a 90% high school FT shooter was guaranteed
to miss every 1 and 1 Free throw.. They got raped by an official and got called for a foul on a 40ft desperation
heave and lost a game to a good minnesota team.

Fran is Fran. I agree with the sentiment by many...his inability to be calm and answer softball questions
are a symptom of his true weaknesss...he can't adjust in game because his emotions control him and he's got old man syndrome that doesn't allow him to adapt during games or during a season.

Nah. Lute was a condescending dick to reporters. Some (not me) “blame“ his leaving Iowa on the way he perceived reporters treated him.

Fran is too emotionally invested in the team and his players to be able to treat this game like the business that it's actually become,.. Watching these post loss interviews it's obvious that he takes all of this very personally,.. perhaps too personally for his own good.

geez I read all the posts before watching the interview.... was expecting much worse based on the comments.... most the over reacting is on this board.... Frans a firey competitor.... surprise he’s pissed after a loss... unimaginable....Was it just me or does Howard work the officials as much as Izzo?

Yeah I was surprised. He was going off even after they were up 18 and the game was clearly in hand. Hadn’t watched a lot of MI this year but the other game I did watch I didn’t notice him getting that into the officials like he was last night.
