Went to the Rutgers Board after the dual.

They don't like the stalling calls.
"Fans* are homer tools" I think they meant jackholes.
BTN announcers are terrible
Iowa rides tough
Iowa is good
Brooks was pinned
Out scored 56-15 in 3rd period (plus OT) match.
Gillman hate him/love him
And of course, anytime I lurk on another team's site, Chief is there
And then Abro1975, our new smack talking friend, shows up and talks about the Iowa Way and compliments Iowa which is totally backwards. Most posters come to our board and compliment us and then go back to their own boards and tell everyone how we are a bunch of tools. All of which earns Abro an emoji.

Nice to have another excited fan base in the B1G and a future excuse to travel to NY for a dual. Enjoy the read.

The reason they went away from calling stalling like they used to in the 80s & 90s is because fan bases of teams like a like Rutgers, Okie State, Ohio State ... couldn't accept that their guys were stalling when they were obviously stalling. They would defend them because they were their guys.

Worse off than the fans accepting stalling as a style of wrestling is when the coaches just accepted and coached it into their style of wrestling. The refs either bought into this "stalling is wrestling" mentality or just got sick of being berated by fans and coaches for calling stalling. It was probably a little of both.

It finally got so prevalent that people just accepted that that is how people just wrestle these days. It does not have to be that way.

I like when our guys are called for stalling when they are stalling.

I am actually ok with Stoll getting called for "pushing out" as long as a good ref can tell when a guy is fleeing the mat in the same situation. I would just hope that refs would lean heavily towards calling the guy leaving the wrestling area.

The more stall calls the better. Even if some of them are a little goofy. Because you know what a good non-stalling wrestler is going to always be called WAY less than a staller.

For example, I didn't hear one Iowa fan complain when Sam Brooks got hit twice on the bottom. He was stalling

Good post, Don.

I was surprised at all the complaining about stalls. It could be they aren't aware of the rule change. But at least one of them pointed out that a push out rule is preferable, to remove the subjectivity.

Not sure I agree on Brooks. Didn't mind the stalling calls on Brooks, but not sure he was actually stalling. He just couldn't get out. He was being ridden pretty hard. If they are consistent in calling folks for stalling for being ridden hard like that.....then so be it. Better than the alternative.

Also I didn't mind the call on Stoll. It looked like he was trying to push his guy out and that's a no no. So glad they actually called it.

I am pleasantly encouraged with all the stalling calls I've seen so far. It works to Iowa's advantage of course. But it makes the matches more interesting. Lots more actual wrestling and less.....well.... stalling.

Regarding Brooks... I initially thought he might have been pinned watching it live but I couldn't see the other side. When they showed the replay at the arena, it was a totally different view for me, and I can see how it wasn't called. The video everyone is seeing on The Mat isn't the same view as what you see in the Hawkeye Sports highlight video. The ref could have called it on his first roll through, but he would have had to be in perfect position. On the following roll throughs, it looks like he's rocking across it and just barely keeping his shoulder up. I think a ref better be damn well sure a man is pinned in those situations before calling it.

As far as the stall calls. If wrestlers would treat OB as if there IS a pushout rule, they wouldn't get called. Refs are calling it on anyone that looks like they are at least making an attempt to keep wrestling or work in. Iowa wrestlers seem to have a very good understanding of this. I think if Stoll had attempted even the slightest flurry as they were work out of bounds, he wouldn't have been called.

There was a Gable story that appeared on this board some time ago, I don’t recall the details. But as the legend goes Gable had one of his wrestlers on the mat and the kid was kicking the crappola out of his opponent, nevertheless the kid was taking some lung time while on top. Gable sensing that his wrestler was giving less than a full effort charged the mat and bellowed at the official, “the guy on top is hanging on, hit him for stalling, or ring him up”!

The story I recall comes from Randy Lewis' "The House of Seven Gables". Great read.

Gable: The Motivator

Just because Gable believed in winning the right way, by attacking and being aggressive and wrestling hard the whole match didn't always mean his wrestlers would do that. In 1981, in a dual meet against Michigan State, Tim Riley was winning his match but he was getting tired and was backing up.

The Michigan State wrestler was being more aggressive. Gable didn't like it. He got right up next to the mat and yelled at the referee that Riley was stalling. He kept putting up his hands like he was warning Riley for stalling. With his own coach calling stalling on him, the referee figured Riley must have been stalling. Gable kept telling the referee to call stalling and the referee kept calling it.

Riley was eventually disqualified for stalling, and Gable applauded the referee when he cautioned Riley out. Riley told Gable afterwards that he thought he was an ***whole, but the next night Riley wrestled like a Hawkeye should and went on to become a three-time All-American.

And since I had to re-read them all, Vall Jr. constantly reminds me not to ruin his motivation...

Gable: The Disciplinarian

Later that season, my freshman year, in a dual meet against Northwestern, I came out and pinned my opponent in about 20 seconds. After the match Gable told me "Lewis, you didn't even break a sweat, you need to get a workout in." I laughed and went over and sat down on the bench to watch the rest of the matches. A few matches later, Gable saw me on the bench and said "Lewis, what are you doing, I thought I told you to get a workout in."

I said, "I thought you were joking." He wasn't. I said, "Gable, pinning people is what I do. If you are going to punish me for pinning someone, you are going to take away my motivation to pin. You don't want to do that do you?" Gable thought about it, frowned and then said, "Well, okay, I don't want to ruin your motivation."

Here is another one...Warning: put the coffee down:

"In my senior year in Dec. of 1980 we wrestled a dual meet against Syracuse, Gene Mills was a returning NCAA champion and had already won Tibilisi and made an Olympic team. He was up against Mark Trizzino at 126 pounds. I was the next wrestler up for us at 134 pounds. Gable and J. were getting Trizzino ready to wrestle Mills, and Trizzino was up for the challenge. In the first 5 seconds, Trizzino double legs Mills and picks him and gets the takedown. He then looked over at our corner, and gives J. and Gable a wink and a thumbs up!!! Our whole team saw it, and I started giggling. Mills immediately reversed Trizzino, and then kept tilting Trizzino, and ended up on top for most of the rest of the match. Mills ended up winning 27-3. As a downtrodden Trizzino shook hands and started walking off the mat with his head down, I was just coming out on the mat for the next match. Right as Trizzino was ready to pass by me, I leaped in front of him and he looked up. I looked right in his eyes, winked and gave him the thumbs up. I was still laughing as my match started."

Well, since they don't deliver phone books, you have to be "somebody" in a different fashion these days. Plus, you're kind of a tool on the football board as well.

Would love to go on, but I have some Christmas shopping to do. I'll be picking out a Thermos. . . .

You are welcome. Your win over Nebby makes both schools look better. Thanks for stopping by, don't be a stranger. We'll have a Midlands thread going in a couple of weeks which will be the next PBP unless there is another faux pbp...

I'm looking forward to the Midlands on FREE BTN ! PS- the NCAA finals is in Madison Square Garden , NYC, the MECCA ! Great Venue, but high hotel prices in Manhatten. TIP- get a hotel in NJ, and it's a quick , inexpensive subway or bus ride right to MSG. Fly into Newark, NJ NOT JFK or LaGuardia - in NJ Hoboken and Jersey City have a great night life not to mention awesome skyline view , and probably will save 50 % on hotels. I'll post more cost savings travel tips a month or so before.

Shit bro...thought we were all camping out in your basement.

I feel obligated to mention that your invitation is a maybe not the best idea. (But thx!)

LOL, I live about 30 minutes west of Madison Sq Garden. If I can sweet talk the wifey, I can fit about 6 of you animals in my basement. Figure on pitchers of Bourbon Manhattens and Pork Roll and Egg Sandwiches to feast on pre tourny !

I remember when gable gave the guys a quarter mile sprint for every stall call. I like that.

This is a great thing for the Big Ten. I'm sure the majority of the Nebraska fan base will disagree with me, but it puts the Rutgers program on the map for all to see that this is not a team to sleep on! Some of their guys will make noise come NCAAs, and possibly Big Tens. Good Win Scarlet Knights!

Have you ever seen the video of Mills wrestling in his HS state championship match? He's got his opponent turned and, moments before getting the fall, flashes a big thumbs up to his coach.

Hi, I'm in Cedar Grove(near Montclair) only 20 minutes south of Ridgewood (nice town !). My wife's cousins live in Ridgewood, hey, they just won Group 5 Football championship ! I played football and baseball in HS, grew up in Warren county in Hackettstown, near Blair Academy and P'burg HS, 2 HS powers. I followed my buddies around watching them wrestle, and got hooked. I was asked to come out to Wrestle in HS, being a decent upper weight guy, but was too tired from football and too lazy to cut weight , lol But we had wrestling intra mural tourny's in HS gym class and usually won my weight. I have a lot of respect for wrestlers as they work harder than all other sports and go through so much mental stress.

I notice Iowa does not wrestle Penn St or Ohio St this season. Damn, was looking forward to those matches. H well.

Being in the Big10 helps a lot ! Also, adding Donnie Pritzlaff to the staff has been a big help as well. He's a NJ wrestling legend, and the lower and middle weights have already benefitted a lot from practicing with him.

Certainly can't hurt adding Pritzlaff.

No offense intended, but these expanded conferences suck. I wish Rutgers, Maryland and Nebraska were still in their old conferences, and Penn State an independent or Big East or anywhere but the Big 10, though they've been around awhile and it's a bit more "normal" now facing them in any sport. Cindy Lauper was right though "Money changes everything"!

My observation, and I've been following NJ wrestling for about 15 years, which really only covers the current crop of NJ college guys, is that NJ HS wrestling has gotten much, much better over the last ten years. The number of guys wrestling year round, the number of wrestling clubs to pop-up, and the number of guys who start eyeing high achievement from an early age is much higher than it was ten years ago. When my son was in second grade there were just a scattering of clubs, and most sessions only had five or ten kids. Today just about any kid in NJ lives within half an hour of five or ten clubs, run by very good instructors, with 30 or 40 kids in the room every night.

That said, Rutgers still isn't as good as they could be (should be?) because most of the top guys are leaving the state. David McFadden, Ethan Ramos, Joey McKenna, Johny Sebastian, Nick Suriano, etc. If Rutgers had managed to keep even half of those guys the current and future team would look like a legitimate national power.

I certainly can understand how you feel, but for us at RU, especially the football and wrestling fans, joining the Big 10 has been a dream come true. Rumor is we waited for the invite, knowing it was coming , and passed on the ACC.

I'm sure some Nebraska fans miss playing their rival Oklahoma in Football.

Glad you understand my angst (I'm old and a traditionalist! Ha!). Even though I'm a Hawk fan from birth, I LOVED those Oklahoma versus Nebraska games! How could you not? The best game in College Football for my money year after year, especially in the wishbone days at Oklahoma, always my 2nd favorite team to the Hawks (Billy Sims is still the best RB of all time for my money to this day - College or Pro).

Got to watch #2 OU take it to the #1 Huskers live in Lincoln in 1987, courtesy of one of my buddies who was wrestling at Nebraska at the time. They were wrestling out of town at a tournament (my friend ended up as OW of that tournament that day), and one of the injured wrestlers was our "host" and had tickets from 4 of the wrestlers to get us into the game. Nervous as hell we were going to get turned away at the gate for being "fake" students! All worked out though, while cheering for Oklahoma under my breath sitting in the Nebraska student section! Great times.

Penn State fan here - RutgersAl is the man. Never met him, but a great board presence. Hopelessly optimistic, but in a good way. Takes a ton of ribbing and worse in good humor and never stoops to a troll's level.

It's easy to be a superfan for a winner. RutgersAl is a Rutgers fan through thick and thin - mostly thin. That is commendable.

This pretty much encapsulates the one and only Al (and the thinness to which you allude).
