I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since his passing, where does the time go….
I have a lot of memories of Chris having competed against him in high school and attending the University of Iowa when his untimely passing struck the college basketball world. I attended a central Iowa high school and graduated in 1990. We participated in the old Central Iowa Conference in sports(Ankeny, Boone, Indianola, Newton, Southeast Polk, South Tama, and Urbandale). This was the last year the conference was around for football and then it disbanded altogether the next year. Yeah I know South Tama vs Ankeny wasn’t fair. Chris broke his foot playing quarterback for the Indians his senior year and missed the first half of the basketball season. 6’8” quarterback and he also pitched as a sophomore for the baseball team. Pretty intimidating to say the least. After returning to the court he played with a protective boot on his foot and still managed to dunk on us with ease. In Iowa City I crossed paths with him a couple times but he never remembered me. Once he was “sick” outside of the Sports Column and two of Iowa City’s finest let him go. Now to that cold snowy night in January, I was at the Airliner when the news broke. Randy Larsen soon announced that the bar was closing early and you could hear a pin drop. I grabbed my jacket and ran home to my apartment on North Van Buren Street. When I got home the phone was ringing and my mom was on the other end. Through our tears we both managed to say I love you. Pretty heavy times. Iowa Hawkeye basketball would never be the same for me.
On a side note I also had to guard a kid from Ames named Hoiberg who did play in the League for a few years and is still associated with the game. I personally thought Fred was the better athlete but that’s just my opinion.
Go Hawks!!
