On the Trow and Funky show, Ben Askren said that he really likes Kemerer and that K is aggressive and is consistently ending up in a couple of positions that Ben really thinks are very advantageous to scoring a lot of points but K just doesn't quite know what to do in them. He's extended an open invite for Kemdog to come and stay with him and he'll coach him up on those positions. He thinks Kemerer could really open things up. I like it!!

Or he could ask Nolf.

I wish Iowa had a funkzilla on the team. They are exciting to watch, dangerous in all positions, and can put up points in bunches. All of which Iowa could use. Taylor Walsh was a pinning machine. Iowa needs one of those guys for their bonus points in the tournament.

Sounds a lot like Sasso, hes a funk master and a pinner.

Man I hope he get him. Wonder how long til he makes his commitment? Thought it might be soon after his top 5 came out. Maybe he's gonna do his official visits to those schools in that case it will be awhile.

I'd be down with that. Kemdawg is an offensive machine already. Add a little funk to the mix, and it's all the better. I hereby accept Ben's offer on Michael's behalf.

I personally would like to have him continue his current offensive attack. While funk can be a bonus at times, it can also slow down a match dramatically and in my opinion that is to the advantage of the lesser wrestler, which KemDawg clearly is not.

If we want to get back to the "Iowa style" that people are always talking about, playing twister for 20 seconds and ending up in a stalemate 50% of the time, won't help us get there.

IMHO

GO HAWKS!!

I pretty much agree. But Askren, for example, wasn't much of a "Twister player". He was a creative and aggressive pinner. He didn't do a lot of ankle grabbing, etc. -- he used his funk to stick guys or at least rack up near fall points, and he did it with regularity. Especially with the advent of the 4-point near fall, it really pays to put guys on their backs.

So my point was that if someone can take Kemerer -- a beast on his feet who can take down pretty much everyone at 157 except Nolf with consistency -- and give him a mat game that allows him to turn guys, then they've created a monster.

I'm not at all a fan of the "Twister" stuff, but that's not at all descriptive of Askren's funk, based on what I saw of him. And it was Askren-style funk -- basically, catching guys opportunistically and turning them -- to which I was referring.

This. We don't want Jesse Delgado. The older Terao was fun to watch from his judo background.

I for one hope Askren never gets near Kemerer. No thanks
As for Askren's supposed proposal, I was speaking more figuratively than literally. I highly doubt Askren would ever become any sort of coach for the kid. That said, if he pulled him aside at some tournament and showed him a few techniques to go work on that might help him turn 2-point moves into 4- and 6-point moves, I'd be cool with that.

Calling Ray Brinzer. . . . You reading this, Ray?

He's been known to drop by and share some great stuff every now and then. . . .

Askren just said that there were a couple of positions that K was ending up in and getting stalemated where he thinks he could show him how to finish those positions for a lot of points. He wasn't talking about turning him into anything different.

Without digressing too much, I am going to add a comment independent of everyone else's, as I don't want anyone to think I directing it towards them, which I am not. I think may have posted this here before, so if I have, I am sorry, but I used to spend time on Hawkeye Nation, before discovering this board.

A bunch of guys I used to coach with were at nationals 10-12 years ago in St Louis(not sure, there have been a lot in St Louis and they are starting to run together). Well anyway, we were on the Landing drinking a few after the semis I believe and Les Anderson(Harold Nichols long time assistant) walks up to our table and says, "what's up boys?" We chatted about things and one of us asked him the question, "What do you think of the wrestling so far this week?"

He thought for a few seconds, and said,"If I had brought someone with me this week to watch their first wrestling, and I had to explain the goal of the sport, my first thought would be that the objective of wrestling is to roll around on the mat and hang onto each other's ankles and feet"........

For a man to have done what he had done in the sport both as a wrestler and as a coach to say that, really meant a lot to me.

I mean no disrespect to anyone on this board, because I know this wasn't the OP's goal/point, but the sooner this part of wrestling is eliminated(if it even can be) from this great sport the better off it will be. It would be more entertaining to hardcore wrestling fans as well as casual fans. It would be more likely to bring new fans to the sport if it happens. It would be easier to officiate and more fun for the participants. It would probably even be safer, as think of all the knee problems that arise from the screwed up positions that happen and the torque that is put on knees in those same scrambles.

I for one know our coaches never wrestled that way, not in high school, college nor internationally, and I am pretty sure they don't teach it, so I for one would love to see it go away. Mat wrestling should be one guy attempting to score points on top, and one guy defending that while at the same time trying to escape. Not 20-30 second periods of wrestling, where something rarely happens and you are really unable to discern if there is any offense, but rather just "hanging on" til the next stalemate.

Sorry for the rant and thanks for reading.

GO HAWKS!!

Hey, take free advice when you can get it. Say what you will about Asken, he knows his shit.

As a team we're not scoring enough back points--which translates to bonus points. I'd love to see more well-executed funk to finish TDs and score back points. Randy Lewis and Joe Melchiore will tell you that funk is your enemy only if you're not doing it right.

Yeah, Askren is a lot of things; boring isn't one of them. Nor is Kemdawg; who has become my favorite Hawk.

Tom Brands hit a leg pass in college, Teasdale shared it on Twitter. It's a great weapon to have and if it can turn us from getting taken down into getting a take down, then I'm all for it. It's a great addition to have to your wrestling but I'm sick of seeing it so much.

Ben is no doubt a phenom when it comes to scoring from anywhere.

Translation??

I think what Pinters is trying to say is that Askren was a creative wrestler and would be as a coach as well. Also add in the fact that he is connected to Flo so more fans in Iowa would subscribe to hear what the coach had to say in previous Flo interviews and the program he is on with his homie from tOSU. Plus, Askren has talked a lot of sh*t about Iowa so a rivalry might be good there.
