My good friend has breast cancer and was laid off due to cuts to USAID. Now she’s unemployed, and losing her health insurance, and facing the overwhelming burden of paying for her cancer treatment on her own. I can’t begin to imagine the depths of what she’s going through. She’s one of the most caring and selfless people I’ve ever known, dedicating her life to helping those with the least.

I hesitated to share this, but it’s important to recognize that the reckless decisions of Trump and Musk have real, devastating consequences.

***Edited to show that she is losing her health insurance, instead of lost her health insurance.

She should apply for Medicaid. Eligibility is determined by income and not resources.
I was just getting ready to say......I know for a fact this is true. Friend of mine was laid off in November, reapplied for Blue Cross in December, was then diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and was turned down by BCBS stating 'You qualify for Medicaid'. Ended up being a blessing......paid for all of chemo and radiation. In remission.

While I feel bad for your friend this is no different than everyday corporate America. I was laid off during covid right after our 4th was born. It sucks going through it but I’m far better off now than five years ago.
I'm so sorry to hear that. I too was laid off at the start of COVID, and that alone was incredibly difficult. I can’t imagine facing not only the uncertainty of unemployment but also the unimaginable weight of a cancer diagnosis. The fear, the grueling treatments, and the endless challenges — it’s beyond heartbreaking. No one should have to endure so much at once.

She very well may have done so. I don’t know. What I do know is some other friends of hers set up a gofundme because of concerns with money.

You may want to put the go fund me here, if you find it.

I bet HBOT is good for at least a couple hundred bucks in donations.

You should read the gofundme, then read what you wrote. I hope she has friends that want to help her, not whatever you are doing.

His post matches up very well. He said he wasn’t sure what the status of the new insurance was.

How long ago did she get laid off? Is she not eligible to stay on the old insurance plan through COBRA? Those premiums typically aren't cheap, but they'd sure as hell be cheaper than paying OOP for cancer treatment.

I’m trying to help my friend. she’s losing/lost her company health insurance as well as her job while having cancer. What am I doing that bothers you?

It’s probably the complete inaccuracy of the words you wrote regarding not having health insurance and the prospects of paying for cancer treatment completely oop.

I didn’t know at the time. She is losing her company insurance and will have to get third party insurance. How is that different than all the posts on these boards over the years that have asked for help. Anyone can get third party insurance. What you really have an issue with is that you don’t like that she is losing her insurance because of our current administration and I pointed that out.

Thanks for posting the GoFundMe. Her journey is completely different from the No pics and I wish her well.

I'd just stop though.

Something has to be done regarding healthcare. Being tied to any job being the factor as to whether you get life saving care and not going bankrupt in the process is a real problem. Mrs Knives is self employed and if I would lose my job and she would develop something like that we would be in the same boat. I hope your friend some how can have a positive outcome…

ACA is income based. Not wealth based.

Millions of people have used it to retire early. I personally know several and I plan on retiring early and using it. There are calculators out there to play with income levels and see plans.

The income is based on the previous year though. Are there ways around that?

How is it completely different?
No pic did Lumpectomy, chemo, Rad ther. She was triple neg. Looks like your friend is doing chemo, then mastectomy, the rad ther. I'm not a doctor, but chemo then surgery seems counter-intuitive to me. Maybe that's the process when HER+2.

I think she is getting good advice. She went to the Mayo Clinic which are one of the best in the business.
