Great game for Payton. Thought it was worthy of a specific shout out.

Scored 19 and proved to be a diverse scorer tonight. I think we will see more games like tonight. The shooting is one thing that translates pretty well as the competition improves because Payton is always in the "triple threat" position (remember that one from JHS and HS guys?) and ready to shoot, pass or drive.

I think the word was Payton was a hard worker. He has mostly looked prepared to play. He runs and hustles on both ends.

I think his quickness is very similar to Kyle Korver's. Payton's shot goes up fast and looks beautiful.

Go get 'em kid.

Most impressive play of the night for me was a shot he missed.

Pump faked at the 3 line, put the ball on the deck for two dribbles then hard crossover got himself wide open for a jumper.

Thats a big time move.

Please, don't pump up his excellent court activity, it could lead to other Hawk fans predicting him going to the NBA after this season.

What i find very telling in Payton Sandfort is that as a freshman, coming off the bench....

he's tied with Bohannon for 2nd most shot attempts on the season, behind of course Keegan.

Kid is not afraid of the moment, that type of confidence in a young player with his shooting abilities is only Great News for Iowa!

As Keegan stated, he's a bucket getter!

The kid is a player! He was the one who I was most interested in seeing what he could do to start the season... His transition from arguably the best HS team in Iowa history to college ball is critical for the Hawks. And from game one he has shown to be a baller!

The main reason of interest was for his 3pt shot, initially, as this team lost a ton of outside shooters(Payton shot 46% in HS). And Payton looks great so far. But his overall game is legit. Love it!

Sandfort will be a starter someday. Soon. And probably alongside his 4-star brother, Pryce.

Go Hawks!

This board seems to be over analyzing things right now. Competition has been horrible so far. Zero pressure on this team right now. Everything is coming easy. It's good to see this team destroy teams and see true freshman play well but let's see if this translates as the year goes on. Kid does have a crazy quick release though.

When I saw Payton at state championship I didn't think he would be this good I'm glad I was wrong. He is a stud
Same here......I am really pleasantly surprised at his all around game and specifically his defensive effort/play. He clearly isn't a great leaper, but he is more athletic than I anticipated.....very very happy with his talents.

My wild prediction here, but Payton Sandfort could go down as the best shooter in Iowa history. OK, maybe not the best, but on Mt Rushmore. He is confident, already accurate, has a quick release, and best of all, seemingly no conscience whatsoever. All pretty important for a shooter. I look forward to seeing what he can do against bigger and better defenders.

Yeah, its not crazy.

Theres something different about his readiness to shoot.

He looks like an NBA 3pt specialist in his preparedness to shoot both physically and mentally.

He takes really quick shots but they're not "rushed" he knows what he's doing.

You just don't see that in college players very often.

If he's on the court, there won't be any concerns about someone getting a shot off, he'll gladly take it! Pretty rare to see a true freshman step in like that and let it fly.

Yes the competition will ramp up and the defense against him will get more intense, but he's proven if he's open just a little bit he'll take the shot, and he seems to make a fair amount of them. I'm guessing he'll adapt as far as volume in tighter games, but right now he's letting it fly with big leads, and most importantly he's making them.

He certainly looks like he has "it" relative to playing Big Boy Basketball, and his confidence appears to be thru the roof. He'll have some ups and downs like everybody does, but it doesn't appear like the stage is too big. Hawks got a keeper.

Outside of Keegan Murray, who do you want taking a shot right now for the Hawks? For me it's Payton Sandfort (with all due respect to JBO - who has been a bit shaky so far, but he'll right the ship). The kid has future All Big Ten written all over him, IMO.

1.2 two pointers made
2.2 two pointers attempted

He's shot 6 FTs and made 100% of them.

While he is a great shooter, his best attribute might be what is between his ears. He has picked up the system quickly and has understood his role. Defensively he seems to be in the right place at the right time and has rarely been out of position. He is really one of the best freshmen we have had here, all things considered. He would have been a starter for most hawkeye teams in the past.

He's averaging .73 points /min on the floor, second to Keegan (1.1pts/min). Surprisingly, Kris is right there with him. Kris is more of a silent assassin compared his brother and Sandfort, who McCaffery has obviously given a bright green light to shoot. Being a very fine FT shooter is just a bonus. Going to be an interesting year with these three.

Question about his brother....Do they play the same position? What year is he in? If he is actually the better player, McCaffery has to lock him down immediately.

His release is gorgeous and so quick it’s unstoppable. You can tell which shots are going in and which don’t because it’s perfect form and just a matter of if he gets his shoulders squared up properly.
Always interesting to me, most kids of high level high school coaches or any college coaches have really excellent shooting form. They may lack in physical attributes or athleticism, but typically have great form taught to them from an early age. Well there is occasionally an exception or 2!....

Be really interesting to see how PS and JBo play off each other. As competition ramps up, Jordan is ready and has seen it. Hes the all time leader in 3s. And shoots from anywhere. Does PS have that tool? Does he close out Wisconsin? Answers coming soon. As far as I’m concerned, Kris is the untapped resource from 3.

I want to see him defend B1G guards before getting excited, but you’ve got to love his stroke. If people blow by him whenever they want he can’t play as we don’t have rim protectors. On the last offensive possession of a tight game I’d have him on the floor.

I thought I had read that Fran sees him playing the point. I believe he is a sophomore this year.

That and playing b1g defenders AND "physical big ten basketball"

A. Garza at 35 so, IOWA dominated in the post…
B. IOWAs 3 starting guards had zero points and were out scored by >40 points…

enforcing my point that greater team defense is needed…
How many points did Oregon score?
