A military plane carrying enough specialty infant formula for more than half a million baby bottles arrived Sunday in Indianapolis

So, your hot take is the government is now responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of baby formula?
1. Issues at the Abbott facility are their responsibility. It didn’t happen overnight.
2. Yes, this was brewing, and Abbott had the power to throw their resources at the issue.
3. The other manufacturers had plenty of warning to ramp up their production, but did not.
4. Suppliers and manufacturers are not constrained from having an ample supply on hand in case of emergencies. There is no requirement to have everything on a JIT schedule.
Your hot take is all bullshit you pulled out of your ass. Not well thought out at all.

You can go to the FDA website to read their report that they were caught off guard. They have since formed a new group between the department and manufacturers so issues like this do not happen again. AND they thanked the other manufacturers for stepping up and going into overtime to try and make up for the shortages, but they could not make up for such a large amount.

FDA has regulations for the expiration date for baby formula so these stockpiles you think there should be are not there.

Good as in worst president in the last 100 years. How anyone can think he was good is beyond me. Again, his NUMBER ONE JOB was to protect Americans. He failed miserably at that...because he lied his ass off, and it's on record.
Most things are beyond you. Trump fast tracked 3 vaccines. If your criticism is the vaccines don't work as advertised, that's not Trump's fault. Where do you think Trump got the information that he based his lies on?

On Feb. 29, Fauci gave an interview on the NBC morning talk show “Today,” during which he stated that at that moment in time, “the risk is still low, but this could change.”

“I’ve said that many times even on this program,” Fauci stated in that interview. “You’ve got to watch out because although the risk is low now, you don’t need to change anything you’re doing. When you start to see community spread, this could change and force you to become much more attentive to doing things that would protect you from spread.”

What was stopping the administration from temporarily relaxing those standards in, let’s say, March?

A: Supplies are coming from Europe, not Canada; that was my USMCA comment, which was one MAIN reason for the supply shortage to begin with.
B: USMCA restricted Canadian sales. Not JUST into the US, but internationally, before additional tariffs were put in play.

You cannot simply violate agreed upon treaties with some Executive Order.

It's the right thing to let the public know. It's really stupid to celebrate it like it's some sort of major accomplishment, especially when the problem was partially created by the government to start with.
But mostly Finance, and let's be honest.....this problem was created (mostly) by the private sector and the business model THEY endorsed.......much like the problems with "the supply chain"....I understand human reactions to "failure" is to look for a scapegoat...and the Government is always a convenient scapegoat......Remember Cohen's Law...."The government is the enemy until you need a friend"......

Lol.

“I don’t blame the guy who’s been in charge for the past 16 months. I blame a different guy who used to be in charge and isn’t on my team.”
So NOW you favor more government interference and regulation in private enterprise? You guys change sides faster than I can keep up with......
Please....next time, gimme a "heads up"? and not a Monday Morning QB viewpoint.

It's not a "supply chain" issue. It's a failure of Abbott and the FDA on the front end, and the FDA on the back end. This issue started 8 months ago.

The decision to go to 4 main US suppliers is an FDA issue? Maybe because of how welfare product is distributed and the advantages that for the manufacturers alone creates....,.but the program was developed for the (economic) benefit of the formula manufacturers.....It's the FDA's fault the Michigan plant produced "tainted/contaminated" product?

The government kept the free market from getting it done. It's not a victory when you create a problem then solve it.
This rule has been in place for years, though. I can understand the market getting caught flat footed if they just installed this change. But it has been around for quite some time now.

I just find it weird that the government has to be more adaptable than the free market.

Try to understand what You are about to read. The bacteria causing the deaths of 3 children was not found in the manufacturing plant, or in any of the recalled formula that was tested. A different type of bacteria was found in non-production areas of the plant.

Why is that weird when government creates the rules?

Trump was anti vaxxer. He was telling people not to take them as they were being developed.

It's weird the government can get this done but not the free market.
You do know it is a formula that is fairly unique, can be used only by less than 20% of people, so you have to wonder why Europe had some much of it laying around.

And as far as the "free market" goes, the FDA has to test and inspect, so probably hurdles to overcome. Again to your "free market" question - why is there really only one US producer? There is definitely something restricting the freeness

Republicans: Oh, like we're supposed to be happy you did something you bastards??!!

When have we ever imported a significant amount of infant formula from Canada? We are a net exporter of formula to Canada and have been for some time now - long before USMCA.

It’s completely absurd to think that imported formula from Canada would have mitigated this crisis. Canada can’t even stock their own shelves right now, let alone help us stock ours. Your Twitter echo chamber apparently didn’t inform you that Canada is also facing a shortage of specialty formula and their factories have been scrambling just to keep up with their own domestic demand.

Why? Because they normally get a lot of their formula from the United States, specifically the Abbott facility in Sturgis, MI.

Canada also has had to turn to European suppliers to supplement their usual sources. That required relaxing their own labeling standards, just like we eventually had to do. One of their normal requirements is that the labels have to be bilingual. Apparently a lot of people in Quebec speak French.

February 2022: Abbott facility in Michigan is shut down for health violations.

March 2022: Local shortages of formula start occurring. Democrats do nothing.

April 2022: Shortages become worse. Democrats still do nothing.

May 2022: Shortages reach crisis level. Store shelves in many areas are completely empty. Parents become desperate.
Democrats: “Shit! We need to find more sources for formula! Goddamn it, Trump!”

Right! Back in march the democrats should have rallied and started cleaning the plant themselves!
Of course, then you all would have blamed them for not doing it in February.

The relaxing of monopolistic practices were ushered in by repubs and the dems rapid promotion of "free trade" on a world wide basis laid the ground work for a situation like this to happen.

U.S. health regulators took steps to allow more foreign baby formula on American shelves, easing rules that had effectively prevented shipments from many overseas manufacturers.

We’re the victims of protectionism and a regulatory agency that shut down a plant it doesn’t think is responsible for an outbreak, and you’re blaming “free trade”.

What sort of Bizarro-world BS is that?

This administration should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to even get to this point.
If you needed a post to prove you lost all touch with reality this would be it.

It's clueless, shows a complete lack of education and understanding and dangerous.

Not suprised you just ignore all the other dumb stuff before and after this. But hey vaccines got her a year later.

We'll ignore telling people not to worry about in the first place.

Everyone with an IQ over 71:

The Trump Administration failed to heed GAO’s recommendation to develop a national coronavirus vaccine distribution plan “that focused on coordination and communication” and established “a time frame for documenting and sharing a national plan for distributing and administering COVID-19 vaccine.”
