A perfect encapsulation of the GOP approach to "governing"

Background: A relatively meaningless elected office, County Recorder, here in Iowa. Not sure why it's even a partisan elected position, as the job is to record marriages, deaths, etc. -- just bureaucratic work primarily with little or no decision making power. Office has been held capably by a Democrat for many years. But this Republican Karen has determined this outrage must not stand!

Here is her quote on why she should be elected:

Darland said she was asked by Scott County Republicans to run for the seat and said, "It's time for a change." Darland, though, could not articulate specific changes she would make to the Recorder's Office.

"I think sometimes it goes down to term limits, almost," Darland said. "Sixteen years (it's actually 19) that's a lot of time in one office. ... It's just time for a change."
Asked what change she would bring, Darland replied, "I think it would be unifying the team (in the recorder's office). I think it would be putting in the time."

So to sum up, she has to run because she was asked. She has to bring change, but can't articulate what that change is. When asked what's wrong with the job being done by the current office holder, she has no answer other than "it's just time for a change."

Nice approach to governing, Karen 😂

I will admit, she has the requisite haircut to be an elected Republican office holder in Iowa, though. Probably her chief qualification for the job, TBH.

You can't say this "Not sure why it's even a partisan elected position" and then this "Office has been held capably by a Democrat for many years". You either think it matters (political) or you don't
Why can't I say that? Both statements are true.

I don't think the position needs/should be an elected partisan position, but for whatever reason, it is. And the job has been held and capably performed by Rita Vargas for as long as I can remember, and she has done a stellar job. Scott County rarely has any political discord and is seen around here as a high-functioning government entity.

Sounded like a Biden campaign slogan

Maybe you're wrong, maybe it hasn't been handled capably for 19 years? The chance of a dem being wrong is extremely high by the way.......

No. He's right. They do a better job of communicating with the people that require their services than any other government office I have had to do business with. If you need to handle something down there and you don't have something that is required to complete your business, it is because you didn't listen or read when they told you what you would need to bring. There is nothing more frustrating than going down to City Hall to take care of something only to be handed a list of things you should have brought with you because copies must be submitted with your application.

How much of that is due to Rita Vargas being in charge, I can't say. I'm not about to vote her out and find out though.

Democrats have been the party of empty change forever.

And once again you prove, without any doubt, how ignorant you are on any given topic. The Scott County Recorder's office runs a tight ship. I'm in mortgage, and I've had zero issues with them over two decades, which would include all of Vargas' time in office. You have no idea what you're talking about, as usual.

I like how she said she'd be a unifier. So, Vargas is not? "I think it would be putting in the time". Huh? Vargas is frequently absent?
At least she didn't say that she was going to save Scott County from radical socialism.

If it weren't an elected position you'd have people complaining about faceless bureaucrats who aren't accountable to the public running things.

Scott Country Recorder: Vargas, Rita A 91,949.04 plus insurance and Ipers
And? Is that out of line for a comparable private sector job? Is this comparable for similar positions in Scott County, or other counties? Do you have some inside information on her not performing her duties?
What did the Clarke County Treasurer make 10-20 years ago?

Off topic, but I'm intrigued by the Iowa GOP recruiting relatively unqualified people to run against Tom Miller and Rob Sand.

Tom Miller has been acting like a Republican in bowing to Kimberly in the last few years. Other than the Party allegiance... it's way past time for Miller to leave. He's basically been acting like a Republican in recent years, so I'm surprised the GOP wants him out of office?

Mississippi North... here we come.

Democrats have been the party of empty change forever.
Like when those assholes tried to make sure everyone had health insurance? Or the time they passed the voting rights act? Or the time they avoided an economic depression my regulating banks? As I age, I'm more and more aware of the pattern that, while feckless in dealing the Republican fear mongering, Democrats have been the ones to clean up the mess left by Republicans in my lifetime.

Certainly not out of line for a larger urban Iowa county. Johnson County Recorder's salary is currently ~$116K. IMO County Recorder is the easiest and most stress free of any of the elected county positions by a long shot and certainly the east partisan as well. Very nice gig if you can win an election. Not such a great gig in say Adams County where the Recorder earns $56K, but that probably is well above the average salary in those Iowa counties where pigs outnumber humans.

Maybe the person just wants a sweet high paying job with great insurance?
Maybe. She stated that her party approached her to ask her to run. This isn’t a position in which your political affiliation matters at all.

"The recorder’s office processes and maintains all of the life events for the people of Scott County. We owe it to them to have these records processed efficiently and in a timely fashion. Marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, the purchase of a home — it’s all so important, and I promise to do everything in my power to be a positive asset and to lead by example in the recorder’s office."

What a bitch!

Never said she was a bitch. Said she was dumb. She can't articulate a single reason why the current office holder should be replaced other than "I was asked."

She might be a very nice moron, though.

How is this obscure story of a Scott County 'Republican' running for a local recorder's office a perfect example of the GOP's approach to governing?

Oh yeah, politics shade everything these days. There are no Democrats that sound unprepared or inarticulate...ever...lol.

We're making broad generalizations about the 'GOP's approach to governing' based on some obscure 'Republican' running for the County Recorder now?

That assertion is at best completely unsupported &, at worst, astoundingly dumb.

I know you're kind of dense, but the point is her platform is literally nothing. Just "not democrat."

That is, as noted, a perfect encapsulation of the entire GOP governing strategy from dog catcher to POTUS.
