A win in Madison

My head starts to spin when I consider the implications of a win Saturday against the Badgers. While getting to the BTCG is not probable, a terrific finish is possible. Ending the season on a 5 game win streak involving 2 top 10 teams and 3 trophy games would be a nice consolation for Josey and the seniors. Furthermore, barring a collapse in the bowl game, it would create monumental expectations for the the 2018 team, especially with the schedule getting easier.

What’s do you guys think a win in Madison would mean?

It means that Iowa is still playing football and that there would be 2 games left in the regular season. It was also cause me to ask "what if" as in "what if Iowa had just made one more stop against PSU, what if Nate hadn't fumbled against MSU, etc., etc."

It would mean when we talk to recruits we could say the road to the west goes through Iowa city(and be half way honest) instead of wiscy being able to say it goes through Madison (which has been recently).

Even if we win it still goes through Madison. What we could claim is to have turned the corner and beat two top ten teams.

And if Noah Fant hadn't dropped that fourth down pass in overtime against NW...

1) 10 possible wins
2) upgraded Bowl expectation
3) Nate Stanley continues to win. Expects to win every game and sets the standard for himself and his team for his tenure as the QB and leader for this program the next 2 and half years.
4) youth gaining experience while continuing to win setting the stage for next year.
5) sets Brian Ferentz up for a nice run as OC and a chance to post a pretty healthy record in that position showing consistent success against tough opponents week in and week out.
6) We know what Brian wants. when the Program succeeds, his dream job is in play.

Lots of unnecessary conjecture here, but it is more fun to do this than to say, "it means we won our 7th game." :)

It'll mean we're 7-3 with three more chances to get the young guys more experience in some confidence building type matchups. It also likely means a great offseason preparing to make a legit run at a conference championship, and the CFP.

First thing is to maintain our focus this week as fans, and stop looking ahead. The loud and proud few making the trip to Madison have be ready to bring their A game to the Camp Randall stands. Saturday at 2:30 we Fight For Iowa, Go Hawks!

I've been going to Iowa Wiscy games since 1981. It's always a pretty good/even matchup. Iowa has 17 wins Bucky 13 in that time frame. Lately the visiting team has won since 2007. Will be in Buckeyville saturday. If we have a very similar game plan as last saturday, Hawks have a great shot!

I'm very sure we'd crack the top 10 by winning out with a bowl win. Will probably jump five spots minimum this week alone. In fact, if things played out right in other games, we could jump as many as eight spots.

We end up 9-3 with a big boy Bowl game.

It would help recruiting and get us more national exposue. BF's seat isn't as hot. Expectations for next year would be off the chart. Message board posters will be all over Kirk for allowing us to lose any games.

All that sounds great except for the expectations part.

Maybe there's sarcasm here along with some serious tones, but I mean, if this program is going to move to a level where it can expect 9-3 type years instead of the 7-5 / 8-4 type years, it is going to end up with consistently high expectations. Somehow KF & Co are going to have to learn how to do it when the pre-season chatter is that Iowa's one of the best in the B1G.

Don't coulda woulda shoulda this season, folks. It'll drive you crazy.

To me, going into this year - this season shaped up as a chance to pull off a "2008 ceiling" type season. Meaning, I believed given the new coaches and plethora of new players, most being young, new QB especially...there was going to be a learning curve.

I was "expecting" a 2001, 7-5 type season...but a 2008 type season was also there for the taking. Now, in either of these I wasn't expecting either case to necessarily bear a 2002 or 2009 as it's fruit...but still.

A building year for certain.

Finishing strong and building for next year, a win at Madison would go a long way towards pushing that ceiling higher.

Call me cynical (because I am) but I have this awful feeling that if we beat the Badgers, we will forget how to football and lose to either Purdue or Nebraska.

If Wirfs hadn't had a false start on 4th and short on last drive before OT ....

And if Amani Hooker was 3 inches taller.

Amazing to realize we are that close to being undefeated, with a young and mostly inexperienced team at the beginning of the season, and having to throw two freshmen OT's into the mix just as the B1G season was getting under way.

I disagree. Like Kirk said last Saturday..... This team grew up a little bit. They realized that not only can they play with anybody, but they have the ability to beat down anybody they face. That can be a tremendous wake up call, and can lead to the team really coming together for the final stretch to the season, when they realize what they could be playing for.

Now....how badly do they want it?

Hey I hope that you/Kirk are right on that point! I'm just still in shock that Iowa played that solid of a game from whistle to whistle. Trying not to get my hopes up that we can repeat such an impressive performance. Might have to re-watch for the 3rd time tonight

There are no implications for Iowa per se. It would knock Wisconsin out of the CFP. It would give us a chance for a 9-3 regular season and it may improve our bowl standing. But there are no implications for Iowa nationally. We can't win the West, can't make the CFP. We can put a very nice feather in our cap, keep the momentum going but that's about it.

Actually we could win the West, but highly improbable. Whisky loses three straight, NU loses twice.

For sure, both sarcasm and a touch of seriousness acknowledging our historic propensity to crap our pants when expectations get high. By we, I mean Iowa.
