Throat burns most of the week. I suppose I’ll quit caffeine and carbonated beverages (not beer though). PPIs I suppose? What works? Diet and lifestyle never really changed just age 😡. Rarely get heartburn but clearly have acid reflux.

In my family, it just gets worse. I see a specialist.

I would get that checked. Esophageal erosion can lead to worse things later in life. Get it looked at now.
This. I shared this a couple of weeks ago here, but I knew someone well that for years ignored his chronic acid reflux condition...and then one day he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and was gone in 10 months. 57 years old.

It was only after his diagnosis that I learned that untreated acid reflux can lead to esophageal cancer...and by then it was too late. A real tough one to deal with and probably avoidable. Ugh.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Take care.

Thank you...I felt quite bad for not making him seek treatment, etc. Multiple people told him something to the effect that he "should get that checked out", including myself, over time.

But...none of us were the least bit informed as to how serious of condition could develop or I am sure we would have ramped up the pressure to do something. Sad deal, I still feel for his family that I know misses him terribly.

What prompted him to go to the doctor?

May be what they call "LPR" -- don't notice heart burn, but the reflux (or gasses carrying pepsin) gets up into your throat.

Could be due to weak upper/lower sphincters or some other purely structural cause. Usually due to diet and lifestyle. Smoking, drinking and a diet high in processed (usually rather acidic) foods is often a cause.

For acid reflux scenarios PPIs usually do really well. For the LPR variety, it's a bit trickier.

But see a doctor. ENT or gastro. Probably scope you to make sure nothing major is an issue. Then meds + lifestyle change.

I've been working with an ENT for mine.

I used to have it bad. When i decided to lose weight (I'm 6'2.. went from 220 to 200) and haven't had it since

Agree with this. Especially if it is as persistent as you are saying OP.

About 2 years ago, I had severe reflux for like 6 months straight. Every night I would have to eat 5-6 tums just to get it to the point I could sleep. So, I started watching what I was eating. Eventually, I ended up cutting out all carbs and dairy for about 2 months. Not only did it solve my reflux problems, but I managed to lose about 15 pounds as a bonus.

I was eating sandwiches, cereal, dairy pretty much all the time before. Is there anything you eat regularly that could be causing this?

Get on pantoprazole. Need to avoid Barrett’s Syndrome, among other things.

Can’t really think of anything specific to be honest. I don’t really “regulate” much. I eat out a lot given my job but not like I’m eating fries everyday. Healthy weight, healthy heart and blood pressure 🤷‍♂️.

Get an Endoscopy. I lost a friend at 40 from Esophageal cancer a few years back. I had 2 friends get it this year, one was told he had 6 months, the other had his esophagus removed. Both are 45. I asked them why they went in and both was because of heartburn.

In June I went and got scoped since I've had AR for years, and I found out I have barretts esophagus, Lots of causes for this. My friend that is terminal never smoked a day in his life. Dr. told him it was just bad luck. Coffee is what did it for me. I used to drink 8 shots of espresso a day through out the day. Tore me up inside.

They put me on Omeprazole 20mg a day (basically 2 prilosecs) and I haven't had heartburn since.

Get scoped, better to catch something early.

Sorry about your friend. Upper GI is very important.

I had my latest upper endoscopy this past Monday. All good. 40mg Pantoprazole daily.

Dear lord man, that's a lot of espresso! I love the stuff too, but if I consumed that much daily I think I'd be bouncing off the walls.
