AJ Green having season ending surgery; UNI Pausing ALL Basketball Activities (Dec 16 & Dec 19 Noncon Games CANCELED)

I respect his decision. Sounds like he is putting the welfare of his players first. No one can fault him for that. With 7 healthy players I don't think he will be challenging for a championship any time soon, so got to keep your players mentally and physically healthy.

it is not clear how many players UNI has available; see tweet at end of this post. As you can see, what is being reported is this: UNI had to cancel its final two nonconference games due to not having enough players available

13 scholarship players
LESS how many injured?
LESS how many out w/ covid?
EQUALS how many scholarship players left?

Maybe UNI simply can barely come up with 5 players atm; we just don't know.

I am not going to judge them & say they should forfeit because I don't know the facts

So no actual COVID cases? These games like Dukes should be forfeits.

This seems extremely odd. Yes, they should Forfeit.

They have to stop the madness. NCAA should step in and make them be forfeits.

I feel like teams are definitely taking advantage of Covid. Not saying teams don't have cases, but...

Really weird. I get losing Green is devastating. I didn't realize that teams could cancel for injuries.

Maybe we should look at the facts (AND the COVID cases) BEFORE WE DEMAND UNI FORFEIT THIS WEEK'S GAMES.

Green Bay refused to play UNI on Saturday, Dec 12, because of UNI's covid issues. Should we demand that Green Bay forfeit to UNI? Of course not.

And of the 13 UNI scholarship players, at least 5 are/were out. Sounds like there might be more based on Green Bay's concerns (see below for more).

From the Gazette:

Saturday’s game against Green Bay was canceled Friday night due to COVID-19. Green Bay’s announcement said there were “COVID-19 complications within the UNI program” and the “decision was made based on recommendations from Green Bay’s medical team.”

UNI was the preseason favorite in the Missouri Valley Conference, but the following has sent the season down a unforeseen path:

* AJ Green hip injury
* Antwan Kimmons’ leave of absence
* Trae Berhow missing the first 3 games with COVID-19
* Tytan Anderson’s knee injury
* NCAA’s denial of Goanar Mar’s transfer waiver

That was really smart of Green to get his surgery done in the offseason so he could be recovered for all or part of the bb season. I am sure their super recruit Born can lead them to many victories with his 5'5" frame. I would put his chances of sustaining an injury at about 98%.

"We will resume our regular COVID-19 protocols and prepare for our MVC opener when they get back to campus "

cancellations not related to COVID cases, but they are not going to do the things necessary to meet requirements for now

UNI has covid issues. Green Bay canceled Saturday's (Dec 12) game as a result of UNI's covid issues.

Should Green Bay forfeit that game to UNI? Yes or no?

You showed complete ignorance in your post above (and I will quote you again) when you stated that there were there no actual UNI COVID cases. You were flat out wrong. Actual covid cases is what caused the Green Bay/UNI game cancelation.

I understand clearly that you are wrong. Question is, do you?

Ok, so I’m confused here. Of the 5 guys that they talked about, Berhow was the only one with COVID concerns. Sounds to me like things aren’t going great so Jake just said F it for a couple of games. I understand you need to be flexible in the year of COVID, but just seems a little off. But whatever.

Again, UNI has covid issues. They are not saying how many & who, just like Iowa & other programs do.

Green Bay (not UNI) canceled Saturday's (Dec 12) game as a result of UNI's covid issues.

UNI did, however, cancel this Wed's and Sat's games as a result of their covid issues.

There’s been several teams down to 7 guys in the past.. this whole shutting it down thing is completely new (aside from if Covid is related) and it’s setting a shit precedent.
It just matches most of the rest of what has gone on in America over the last 11 mos.

Looks like the freshman point guard from Norwalk, Bowen Born, will get more playing time then. I always liked his game. I was in the camp of offering Bowen. We shall see. All I know is his game was fun to watch in high school.

Being a hawkeye basketball fanatic during the Lickliter years was like COVID- I wore a mask, avoided people and hid in my basement.

The UNI offense has been atrocious. Green had his worst game of his college career in a Q4 loss in game one going 1-14, and he only shot 9 field goals tonight (19 points I believe he finished with). They are without Born, but it doesn't matter. Two brutal losses for a team that hoped to have an at-large chance. Vermont is a solid MM squad, but they were without their best player, who is also the conference POY. Still losses by double digits at home. Have to wonder what Jacobson's future holds. I think he's making 1M dollars for an athletic department that seems to be struggling both financially and on the field/court.

Jacobsen actually admitted he is doing a poor job of coaching this year. Not something I expect the fans want to hear as he is making a lot of money. I would argue his recruiting is even worse than his in game coaching.

I think their big (Phyfe) is solid, but Green doesn't live up to the hype, IMHO. When they were good years ago, they usually featured two quality bigs, some over-achieving guards and played tough defense. That's not who they are now. The players look lost and so do their coaches.

I think the recruiting has been okay, at least for UNI standards. Born is obviously really good. Noah Carter is good. Antwan Kimmons is okay. He's sort of the mid-major version of a Joe T. There class 3 years ago kind of hurts them though in regards to big. They don't have another true big on the roster outside of Phyfe. James Betz has been pretty mediocre in limited minutes his first two year, which is surprising as he's a better athlete than nearly anyone in the valley. He didn't even play tonight. Cole Henry, the other big in that class, redshirted his tFR year, and wasn't very good as a rFR, and is now suspended at the start of this year. The only other scholarship big on the roster is redshirting this year, and I don't think he's a D1 player. Was pretty average on the AAU circuit, and wasn't very good for CF in HS. However, is family is big donors to UNI, which never hurt anybody.
