Alabama to stop issuing driver’s licenses in counties with 75% black registered voters
The state of Alabama, which requires a photo ID to vote, announced this week that it would stop issuing driver’s licenses in counties where 75 percent of registered voters are black.

Due to budget cuts, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said that 31 satellite DMV offices would no longer have access to driver’s licenses examiners, meaning that residents will need to travel to other counties to apply for licenses. The move comes just one year after the state’s voter photo ID law went into effect.

AL.com’s John Archibald asserted in a column on Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Justice should open an investigation into the closings.

“Because Alabama just took a giant step backward,” he wrote. “Take a look at the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters. That’s Macon, Greene, Sumter, Lowndes, Bullock, Perry, Wilcox, Dallas, Hale, and Montgomery, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office. Alabama, thanks to its budgetary insanity and inanity, just opted to close driver license bureaus in eight of them.”

“Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one,” Archibald explained. “But maybe it’s not racial at all, right? Maybe it’s just political. And let’s face it, it may not be either… But no matter the intent, the consequence is the same.”

The columnist observed that Alabama had created both a civil rights and public relations problem for itself.

“It is an affront to the very notion of justice in a nation where one man one vote is as precious as oxygen,” he insisted. “It is a slap in the face to all who believe the stuff we teach the kids about how all are created equal.”

“So roll out the welcome wagon to the Justice Department, and tell the world what it already so desperately wants to hear,” he concluded. “That Alabama is exactly what they always thought she was.”

“That Alabama refuses to pay for its own government, and used it as an excuse to keep black people from the polls. That Alabama hasn’t changed a bit.”

Since you decided it was necessary to start a second thread on this subject, I will point out the same facts I did in the other one.

The article is extremely biased and makes it seem like the DMV offices were closed specifically to disenfranchise blacks and Democrats. There are 30 counties that have been impacted by these DMV closings. The population of these 30 counties is predominantly rural, white, and Republican. The demographic makeup of these 30 counties is more white and more Republican than the rest of Alabama.

Rural white Republicans will be impacted more than blacks or Democrats. You can argue about whether voter IDs are necessary or whether it is prudent to close the DMV offices. But it is extremely deceptive to cherry-pick numbers from just 8 of the 30 counties and it is extremely deceptive to claim the closings will impact blacks or Democrats more than whites or Republicans.

The people complaining aren't looking for any facts that don't fit their prejudiced narrative.

The Devil is another example of a political ideologue who ignores the true facts to push an agenda.

Haha is there a more self absorbed poster than WWJD? You,ciggy, the devil, and Huey are the Mount Rushmore of nauseating posters on this board.
Wait, you think you get a vote?

Since when did this matter to a progressive?

WTF? Even for The Devil this is quite the misleading headline and article.

I'm sure the Devil just forgot to mention these facts.

Doesn't matter. Bottom line is you shouldn't require a license to vote only then to restrict access to licenses TO ANYONE just a year later.
As I mentioned earlier, that's a valid point.

What's not valid is the bullshit cut-and-paste hack job claiming this is just a GOP scheme to keep blacks and Democrats away from the polls. The OP's link fixates on the 8 sparsely populated counties that are predominantly black and Democratic while ignoring the fact that 22 counties which are predominantly white and overwhelmingly Republican also are losing their DMV offices.

Well, to be fair, there is reason to suspect that Alabama might be attempting to limit African Americans from voting.
Also, since passing the ID law, Alabama raised to cost of their licenses by around 33%. Which, makes it even more difficult for those in poverty to have the voice in their government that they deserve.

Source? Not saying you are wrong, I'd just be interested in seeing it.

I believe an ID should be required to vote, but that ID should be free.

"Reason to suspect" doesn't give Democrats the right to cherry-pick facts and blatantly make things up. Falsely accusing someone of racism is just as bad as being racist.

Yep, conservatism has given quite a bit of thought to how they will disenfranchise Dem. voters. Just the usual stuff from the wing.

I don't think this is so and Rs didn't either until 2013.

There are a lot more poor white Republicans in rural Alabama than there are poor black Democrats in rural Alabama. And those people lost their DMV offices as well.

I don't know the specifics of Alabama's voter ID law. I am on record saying that Ohio's law should be an example for every state. They allow utility bills, cell phone bills, student IDs, government check stubs, and several other forms of identification.

Closing the DMV offices in rural counties is a disservice to Alabama residents. But if it was intended to limit blacks and Democrats from voting then it was a huge tactical blunder because it's going to keep more whites and Republicans from voting.

And you clearly have given absolutely no thought to the fact that these DMV closures are going to impact whites and Republicans more than they are going to impact blacks and Democrats.

Which part of my post do you think isn't so?
That falsely accusing is as bad as actually being racist. For generations the presumption was that things that look racist were and it was up to the actor with a history of racism to push back and prove their good intentions. After the 2013 SCOTUS ruling striking down section 4 of the voting rights act, that relationship has flipped. Until that day nearly 100% of Rs agreed with me, now they mostly agree with you. We have switched from protecting victims to protecting abusers.

I suppose that's a matter of opinion. Frankly I'm pretty sick of Dems playing the race card in almost every issue. It has become a Pavlovian response for them and they don't even bother to learn the facts of an issue before crying racism.

Yes, racism exists and it's a problem. But not every single thing Republicans do is racist.

On the other hand, I guess I should be heartened by the fact that guys like you and Pinehawk and WWJD and moral_victory are concerned about all the white Republicans in the other 22 counties who are going to have a harder time getting a drivers license. It's nice to see that you're consistent and want to see everyone get the chance to vote, even redneck Republicans who fly the confederate flag on their trucks.

I agree. Everything they do is really about cheap labor which often just has the side effect of producing racist outcomes.
