All Quiet on the Western Front

You simply cannot defend what you claimed in post 16. You can’t, and you won’t.

By this thinking you just expressed, @NCHawk5, nobody can ever be forgiven for anything, because forefathers.

This is why the Penn State thing is funny.

Once again, you have zero defense of post 16. Post 16 is flat false, and bigoted at that.

Give me a second. I’ll try to help you with your ignorance.
Ah, so more excuses for Nazis. Enough said, we’re not getting anywhere and your white supremacist outlook on life is getting old.

Here is one decent account of steps Germany has made. But there are monuments and markers all over Germany making sure people know the atrocities that occurred there.

There is sooooo much literature out there regarding all the stuff Germany has done to do exactly the opposite thing that you have claimed of them.

But you can’t bear to have your ideas, false as they are, challenged.

I posted the definition of “bigot” for a reason, @NCHawk5 .

Ah. Again with this. How is this “excusing” Nazis?

Please explain how challenging the accuracy of your post 16 is “excusing” Nazis.

Yeah, they’ve done soooo much intellectually to distance themselves from burning people to death, we should be proud. You’re a clown incapable of seeing reality, and what they did is beyond anything I can show you.

Almost forgot. Please link to anything remotely suggesting that I have a white supremacist outlook on life.

I can promise you that this is the first time that charge has been levied my way! Lol.

Lol. You read the headline. Lol.

Bump for @NCHawk5 — you still haven’t defended any of your wild accusations of me with a single piece of evidence.

You've called me a lot of names, some pretty unflattering and inflammatory stuff — without a single piece of evidence to back it up, and all in service to actually avoid having your “thinking” challenged.

I have been incredibly fair and patient with you given your treatment of me in this thread, and now others. I invite you to re-read this thread and maybe try again.

Are you offended? You should be. I’ve been playing your ass for quite some time. Giving you a dose of what dumbass liberals push on the public.

Not quite ignore-worthy yet, but you are close.

Germans can go f themselves, and that’s not an uncommon opinion. You stand on the graves of millions of people who would be alive now if not for German aggression.

you’re similar to that Fujitsu loser lawyer that doesn’t understand how hated he is. Hilarious, but keep sympathizing with the garbage of the garbage.
I’m German. Descendant from the Duke of something or other. He was hated, sent his daughter to Pennsylvania to get her out of Germany. She kept the name, married, and spawned a small number of us that have now spread from PA to WA. Most residing in WI and Iowa.

I don’t know if my relatives would take you telling us to go f ourselves all that well.

Jackwagon!

Yeah I rewatched it on Sunday and it's not as bad as I remember. I don't know if I was aware that it was made for tv the first time I saw it. The teacher still had an effect on me after the years. Excellent casting.
The teacher was the best character by far...John boy was good and Ernest Borgnine was good as Kat.

Haven't watched the new one...plan to...but looking at the previews....I don't remember the peace talks being part of the previous versions or the book. Don't know why they included that.

The side story of the peace talks was the part I had the hardest time with. If I hadn’t read the book recently I think I would have enjoyed the movie more. The book tells a great story; I don’t know why they felt they had to deviate from it to the extent they did.

What made the book great and poignant was you cared about the characters. Anything that take’s away from that (peace talks) does the story a disservice.

To feel the tragedy of the war and pointless slaughter you have to care about the characters.

To be fair…they probably added the talks to give context to the story. The war was a century ago….didn’t need to do that when the book was written because memories were fresh….

It’s funny you get so angry. Your posts always give a “I’d support hitler” vibe.

This has been the main criticism I've seen floating around Twitter. I'm glad I've waited to watch so I can be in the right mindset to take it as it is, instead of being surprised.

I went through the same thing with 1917. I was very excited when it was being teased and then started reading critiques from some of the history accounts I like on Twitter. I then saw it without worrying about it being a historically accurate film and just enjoyed it for its cinematography and tone.

I watched the '79 version last year after visiting the WWI Museum in KC.

Here are some comparisons between that film and the current one.

Here's a video showing the Western Front day by day. It's astonishing how little movement there was from
the fall of 1914 to the spring of 1918.

It is a very good movie. The savagery of trench warfare is well depicted as is the attitude of the German military's resentment of (armistice) capitulation. The introduction of armor (tanks) and flame throwers was reasonably impressionable.

I prefer the original movie ending. World War 1 was fought on a 340-mile front that varied little. All it accomplished was the loss of million lives and the set-up for a war to cost 50 million.

Edit:

The Richard Thomas (1979?) version was a lightweight version in my opinion and not theater worthy. This was a solid production.

After reading this thread, I’m starting to wonder if there’s any actual history taught in Iowa. Jebus.

WW1 wasn’t about Nazism, it CAUSED Nazism because the results so oppressed the German people they willing accepted fascism as an alternative to being poor and looked down on. Fascists always seem to want to point to internal minorities (Magats pointing to blacks, Jews and “illegals” while Nazis did Jews, certain religious sects and Slavs) and external boogeyman (Magats pointing towards Mexico and Illegals again, Nazis to Russians) to enrage and bolster support in the majority. So the fact that WW1 ended where the native mainstream Germans heard the message of Nazism louder than poor dumb American whites hear the message of Magatism, is the only connection this movie really has to Nazism.

In WW1 it’s wasn’t the evil Fascists versus Democracies like WW2. It was three monarchies (German, Austria/Hungary and Ottoman) with multiethnic empires and their allies versus two monarchies (Russia and Britain) with multiethnic empires and two “democracies“ with strong totalitarian regimes that ran multiethnic empires (Italy and France). America could easily have joined either side as there was very little difference between the two sides in reality. Britain, France and Italy all oppressed and used essentially slave multiethnic armies while Germany and Austria at least mainly enslaved other white ethnicities. Both sides used chemical and biological weapons against each other and civilians. Really America should have just stayed out of it. We ultimately sided with the Allies mainly because we had started selling them equipment and wanted to make sure we got reimbursed. The Cassus Belli used by America to enter on the side of the Allies is very weak as it’s true the Lusitania was a passenger liner…but it’s also true it was carrying 173 tons of military equipment destined for England and thus a legitimate military target of Germany. And there is at least a little bit of evidence England intentionally tried to sacrifice the passengers as they pulled their escort and made the Lusitania sail slowly by itself through Uboat infested waters.

I just started this last night and got about 45 minutes in before I had to get to bed.

holy shit it's a great movies far

I read the book for the first time last week, then watched this film last night. I thought the movie was very good, the special effects and all that, the acting, was all very good and I think depicted the horrors of war which fits the book well.

The political aspect was certainly different from the book, but I guess it does a nice job demonstrating how the decisions of leaders flows down into the suffering of the folks on the lines.

I don't think we get to know Paul nearly as well in the movie as you do in the book. They also don't touch much on Paul's relationship with the outside world.

So, they didn't stick too true to the book in some aspects, but still got the anti-war message across pretty well and I thought it was well done overall.

Book > movie.

I can’t recommend the Dan Carlin podcast series on WW1 enough.

the way he framed it really added context and background to the movie. Really could make a box set out of them both together.
