I'm not a regular reader, so forgive if covered. Is there a strategy for Jones? Did he play v. Maryland? Can he be redshirted? Hayden Fry would be playing him. He makes opponents flinch.
(I know at least 50 of you will respond with some variant of "Why mess with Iowa's already great defense?" Have at it. )

I think Jones is what he is at this point. He seems to be a great special teams player with excellent energy, but he's struggled with mistakes and in coverage when given opportunities to play. He's solid depth, and saying he would excel in the 80s and 90s may be accurate given his style of play, but I think it's been shown that the other guys are better options so far.

Yes confluence of events and his own play. Was pulled after 3 series in the opener, won't go into the reasons for that, it just had to happen. Hockaday was playing well, then got injured. Jones played well in his place at Minnesota, then got the targeting penalty which took him out the first half against Indiana. Welch played well in the middle and likely gives Iowa a bit more range in that spot, which is needed against Indiana, Maryland and PSU.

I wouldn't give up on the guy, he seems to be heavily invested in the program and respected by coaches and rest of team. But you have to do it on the field in games when given the chance.

Fullback next year, please. The other teams LBs would quit after about 5 lead iso plays. He wouldn’t have to think. Just run straight ahead and hit any and everything that moves.

would love that option. absolutely love it.

is brady ross a senior? even if he is back, well, the idea of somebody like AmaniJones at fullbackintrigues me.

I haven't given up on Amani yet, he's a high energy guy IMO and he just needs to play a little smarter when given the opportunity to do so. I also feel the targeting call set him back a little bit, but it wasn't a great call and I don't think he should have had to sit as a result of it, but that's football sometimes.

Hayden Fry would be playing him.

He is a valuable member of the team, who still needs to play within himself and a little more disciplined. He still has to slow the game down a little.

He is a leader for this team and is gaining valuable experience this year and will definitely be needed next year with Hockaday graduating. We could see the starters next year being Welch (WILL), Jones (MIKE) and Neimann (LEO) which was the opening game starting lineup this year. Or it could be Colbert, Welch and Neimann. If the latter is the starting lineup, LB's get dinged and Welch can play all 3 spots so Jones will get lots of opportunities. He may even get more opportunities this year, if he can just slow the game down a little and get on his reads.

They probably have moved a couple LB's to FB as we are very thin there, but I doubt they move Jones to FB at this point unless he asks for the move.

Dont forget there is a guy with the last name doyle that will be more of a factor in the Linebacking room next year. (Along with others). Mark me down for intrigued on what amani would do as a FB.
It might be intriguing, but very unlikely that Jones would move to FB to play behind Ross his Sr. year.

Unless we have a rash of injuries, Doyle will not play except in mop up time next year in my opinion. I think he will be a good one and we will really need him in 2020, but I can almost assure you he will not jump ahead of Welch and Jones at the Mike and that Colbert, Welch, Neimann, Jones, and Wade will get almost all the reps at the 3 LB spots while they develop some youngsters like Doyle and Benson and McDonald. I think it's a good situation to be in to have the time to develop those 3 (and whoever else). It will be interesting, it always is.

Still seems crazy to me how he was so good all summer and in fall camp. He was the only guaranteed starter at LB. Then, the season starts and he’s lost his job within two defensive series.

I would love to see Amani on the field against PSU as a spy to McSorely. After AJ puts a couple of good hits on him he might be less likely to tuck it and run and that puts the Hawks defense in a very good position

Game speed against a real opponent cannot be duplicated in practices or even scrimmages. May have to do with the adrenalin rush of 70,000 fans in the stands or maybe the internal anxiety/pressure when it really counts. Maybe the game will slow down for him in time.

Let's not forget Benson & MacDonald. Hawks will be filthy @ LB in 2019.
Iowa will be 'filthy' at LB in 2019 but none of those 3 (Doyle, Benson, McDonald) will likely never see the field barring injuries or maybe some mop-up time. Welch, Colbert, Jones, Neimann and Wade will get almost all of the reps and with Welch being able to play all 3 spots well, they are in good shape. Those 5 are all great athletes who will have all been in the program 3-5 years come next year. Good place to be.

Amani Jones played on special teams only vs. Maryland and will continue to do that moving forward unless more injuries hit.

He's played in all 7 games this season, so not redshirting.

I think we would get more of the same with him at FB. he would make mistakes there too. I have to agree that he is what he is. Ross has the experience and will be the starting FB next year. He wa supposedly very good in the off season, but of course that is not the actual season and the real player can at times be different that the camp player once the season starts. I like what we have at LB and indeed we will be "filthy" at LB in 2019!

Listen folks, just being able to run into things violently doesn't make you a good football player at any position. He's been coached on his deficiencies and I'm sure he's trying to figure those things out so he can work his way onto the field.

Deep. Profound. Deeply profound.

Things change. At the least those 3 should contribute well on special team.

I would like to see Jones put on 20# and be used as a DE in Passing situations next year. Imagine Epenesa on one side, slide Nelson inside to tackle and Jones coming from DE position on third and long or other passing situations

Are these things Madden has said?

I agree, I hope they all help on special teams!

Things change? Well sure they do, but are you implying that the 5 LB's I listed aren't going to improve? The incumbents are quite a ways ahead of the true freshmen, they are all great athletes and will be bigger, stronger, faster after 3-5 yrs. with Doyle and will be way ahead as far as experience (especially game experience) in their assignments and reads. I'm glad we have time to groom and develop our young LB's instead of having to throw them to the wolves like some years. The youngsters will be raring and ready to go in 2020 and beyond. That's were we need to be and stay with our LB's. This year is proving that after losing our top 4 from last year.

I appreciate everyone's excitement every year about our new guys, but it is very difficult to pass up people who are already on the field producing well. Everyone went on and on how Epenesa would pass right by Hesse, and I and others new it wasn't going to happen, and the 2 freshmen corners are playing because people got hurt. OJ may have lost his starting corner job, but he is still playing nickel and I expect Hankins to become the starter again as soon as he gets fully healed, so I would guess that Moss would have to sit.

Were a 6-1 team that is playing really well at almost all positions, and almost everyone is back next year, but some of you think these kids that are performing at this high level, winning, and are coming back, should be replaced by freshmen next year? I don't get it.

So you think we should move our returning sack leader, 3rd team all-conference, pre-season all-conference, and one of the conferences leading pass rushing DE's to DT on passing downs to play a guy you have NEVER even seen rush a passer before? Makes perfect sense to me, lol.
I think the coaches know what they are doing.
Now there may be a REMOTE chance that they will think about having him (Jones) play Hesse's roll on passing downs next year. Someone who can rush if need be, or just hawk the QB to keep him in the pocket so our 2 big time sack masters at DE can tee off on the QB.
