It's not just Michigan. And it isn't just lead. We've had rivers in WVa and Washington (or is it Oregon, I forget) that have become unfit water sources. We have fracking chemicals in water tables. We have outdated rules that say some dangerous bacteria can't be counted as contaminants. And more.
Whether you think it's merely regulation laxity or a deliberate effort to push privatization of drinking water in America, it's embarrassing that we are becoming the kind of nation we used to joke about.

Humor aside, Americans shouldn't have to move to get clean, safe, free/affordable water.
we have some very dirty water in Iowa, especially because of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Nothing at all, but the cost is an issue for some. You said free, and its not free. You have sewer bills for a family now around $150 a month in some communities.
I said "free/affordable." And I don't get why smart people can't understand that free means tax-supported in conversations like this. It's usually our low IQ cons who get hung up and sidetracked by this. I hate to see a smart poster fall to that level.
Lets just say that I work close to this particular issue, so I get a little hung up on the free notion when it comes to water or sewer.
My guess is that since they already say that Flint is trying to skimp on water costs, that they did not put in place everything that is needed to make the water useable. So now the state government has to come in and do what the local government was already supposed to be doing.
My guess is that they just take the water straight from the river. Here is CR, they have close to 2 dozen wells drilled into the river bed, and the water is already cleaned and softened by the sand under the river. Then it gets a ton of chemicals, and then it is put under UV light. I would bet that Flint does little if any of this, and that would be THEIR fault.
