American athlete to compete for China in the Olympics.

I saw a report on the news about this and she is making something like $35 million a year in endorsements for competing for China. I have to say, that number is big enough for me to compete for another country too, if I cold.

The NBC segment said that China doesn’t allow dual citizenship so it’s unclear how this is being allowed.

She'd make plenty of money on endorsements competing for the U S.

(Checking that she's >18yo)

Her name is Gu!

Not seeing a lot of endorsements for Suni Lee, though.

Perhaps there are some biases in play you're not paying attention to...
She's a freshman at Auburn right now, so maybe her focus is on using gymnastics to get an education. Plus, it didn't help that she supplanted the media's darling, Simone Biles.

500000 not bad for 21 yr old.
Sure, but when looking at this specific comparison it falls short by orders of magnitude. Crazy if that 35 mil number is accurate for a freestyle skier.

BTW, I believe she has been competing for China since 2019. So this “defection” isn’t exactly recent.

As they say she read the room. Smart business.

she should be competing for us but willing to overlook coz she's that amazing.
politics aside, that's an insanely driven and gifted girl...

I thought I saw something about Chris Chelios’ son playing hockey for China. Figured I read that wrong, but maybe not?

I don't think it's based upon legal citizenship per se. Greece did this with several sports back in 2004, when they hosted. Lots of Americans with Greek heritage played for and represented Greece.

Rules are flexible when it is convenient for the people in power. It's not just that way in America. Also, the rules for citizenship and the rules for competing for a country's national team aren't always the same. This happens in soccer all the time.

Certainly not the first American to compete for another country in the Olympics.

Yes, he plays for a B1G school (MSU?) as another hockey player from a B1G school (Minnesota?) is going to play for Canada now that the NHL players are off the rosters for the Olympics.

Remind me of this….

The United States doesn’t allow natural born citizens to renounce their citizenship before the age of 16, so you get Chinese citizenship and renounce your US citizenship at 15. China pretends it counts. We don’t accept it.
