An Iowa City business owner is facing 27 felony charges after police say he paid a minor to have sex with him.
Pablo Mejia Aguilar, 41, owner of Super Star Granite in Iowa City, is facing 13 counts of third-degree sexual abuse of a child, 13 counts of prostitution and one count of drug distribution to a minor after allegedly building a relationship with a minor paying them more than $1,000 to have sexual intercourse.
Mejia Aguilar filed a conditional use permit for his business, Super Star Granite at 3535 Dolphin Drive SE in Iowa City, with Johnson County in 2023.
The 41-year-old allegedly met with the minor "approximately 13 different times" for sex. Location data pulled from the minor's cell phone shows they met at a residence and a business belonging to Mejia Aguilar, according to the criminal complaint.
Mejia Aguilar also allegedly took the minor to "vacant apartments he was in the process of remodeling." He also allegedly provided the person with a cell phone so he could "set up meetings to engage in sex acts," according to court documents.
Police uncovered more than $1,100 in cash, alcohol and marijuana in the minor's room, all of which was allegedly provided by Mejia Aguilar.
Mejia Aguilar's bond has been set at $285,000. He was scheduled to have a bond review at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Johnson County courthouse.
